B. Tech III Year II Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2013 REFRIGERATION & AIR CONDITIONING (Mechanical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of using air as a refrigerant? (b) Distinguish between open air and dense air refrigeration cycles. 2 (a) (b) Mention the advantages of vapour compression refrigeration system over the air refrigeration system. Draw the layout of a vapour compression refrigeration system. State the function of each of the component and show the thermodynamic process on a pressure-enthalpy diagram. Describe briefly the different types of evaporators used in the refrigeration industry. What type of evaporator is used in a refrigerator? For what types of installations are plate type evaporators used. Compare vapour absorption and vapour compression refrigeration systems. State merits and demerits of each method. Describe in detail simple vapour absorption method. What are the advantages of a pulse tube cooling? State the fields of application of pulse tube cooling. The atmospheric conditions of air are 350C dry bulb temperature, 60% relative humidity and 1.01325 bar pressure. If 0.005 kg of moisture per kg of dry air is removed the temperature becomes 250C. Determine the final relative humidity and dew point temperature. The atmospheric air enters the adiabatic saturator at 330C dry bulb temperature and 230C wet bulb temperature. The barometric pressure is 740 mm of Hg. Determine the specific humidity and vapour pressure at 330C. An air conditioned space is maintained 270C dry bulb temperature and 50% relative humidity. The ambient conditions are 400C dry bulb temperature and 270C wet bulb temperature. The space has a sensible heat gain of 14 KW. The air is applied to the space at 70C saturated. Calculate: (i) Mass of moist air supplied to the space in kg/h. (ii) Latent heat gain of space in KW; and (iii) Cooling load of the air washer in KW, if 30 percent of the air supplied to the space is fresh, the remaining being re-circulated. In an air-conditioning plant, an air-handling unit supplies a total of 4500 m3/min of air which comprises by mass 20 percent of fresh air at 400C DBT and 270C WBT and 80 percent recirculated air at 250C DBT and 50% RH. The air leaves the cooling coil at 130C saturated. Calculate: (i) Total cooling load and (ii) Room heat gain. *****
