What is unique about IPE at SLU

The SLU program is innovative and unique in multiple ways: 1)The integration and infusion of IPE learning experiences occurs throughout the curricula of each of the health profession programs. 2)A systematic sequence of experiential learning components of the program enables students to develop and practice caring attitudes toward individuals and communities. 3)There are regular Interprofessional Grand Round sessions in which the health conditions of individuals are examined in light of medical and social contexts. 4)There is an integrated interprofessional practicum which is community-based and provides experience in working with communities to address health concerns of a specified population.

What is Interprofessional Education

Saint Louis University has created an unique interprofessional education component for students in the health professions. The interprofessional education (IPE) component is innovative in that the IPE courses and other interprofessional learning experiences are embedded throughout the health professions programs leading to a concentration in Interprofessional Practice. An essential role of the health care providers of the future is assisting patients with knowledge, skills, and behaviors that allow them to maintain their wellness and minimize the complications of their medical condition. Interprofessional patient-centered care is viewed as a critical element in achieving optimal patient outcomes and is considered to be the model for practice in the future.

The curriculum currently includes five courses for 11 credit hours. The courses are not intended to replace specific knowledge and skills required for the practice of each health profession. Areas covered in the IPE curriculum include: unique roles and responsibilities of the various health professions, principles of interprofessional teamwork, the health care system, health promotion and disease prevention, health care ethics, and evidence-based practice. The courses are:
