Introduction Good morning, we are pleased to present you our Power Point about Victorian Society.

We hope you learn a lot. Index We are going to explain. 1. Population in the Victorian era, that includes: a. Upper class: nobility and aristocracy b. Middle class: bourgeoisie c. Working class d. Situation of women 2. Puritanism And we are going to finish talking about a. Double morality Explanation 1.A. UPPER CLASS. The Upper Class consisted of nobles and aristocratics. The members of this class had usually titles and they were rich. They made their money with the industry or de transport. This class formed the 2% of de population. This class wasnt a working class, they didnt pay taxes, but they had privilegis. The tipical members of this class were politicians, magistrates and priests. They employed many members of the working class as servants. Women never worked, note ven at home. They spent their time doing social life or buying. The children boys were educated at home by tutors. The they were sent to Eton or Harrow, and then they went to big universities, like Oxford or Cambridge. The children girls learned art and languages, but they didint study subjects like maths. They went to privates schools, or to another country to perfect Fench, but they didnt go to universities. 1.B. MIDDLE CLASS. We can say that the middle class was the actual prfessional class. It was a wealthy class, but they hadnt ptivileges. In the middle class there was the upper middle class and the lower middle class. In the upper middle class there was the doctors, the lawyers, the clerks and the priests. The lower middle class consisted of shopkeepers, teachers and journalists. In 1867, there was an electoral reform, the right to vote. Adopted discretion Victorian mores, austerity, religious, morality and conservative political attitude. They lived in big houses, in the most important cities. 1.C. WORKING CLASS 1. They were the majority class (85%).
1

Working class was the majority class, approximately an eighty-five per cent of the society. 2. Workday: 10-12 hours. Workday was about a ten, twelve hours. That was horrible; people didnt have time for their personal life their family, for example. Imagine that, if our workday is currently six and a half hours they had to work the double time. 3. Most people worked in factories (also some people worked in farms, shops, fish market, butcher's shop, mining...). Also it is well known that working class worked in factories, but some people worked in farms, shops, fish markets, butchers shop, mining 4. Gin to combat the cold. What else? Gin to combat the cold. Why gin? Because they didnt have money to buy comfortable jackets or coats, so they spend their resources to obtain alcohol to be warm. 5. People around the world go to London. On the other hand, London, in Victorian era, was an important world capital. Also people who lived in other places around the world came there. 6. Life expectancy: 42 years old. Also is important to know that life expectancy was only, only forty-two years old. Nowadays, in Catalonia, is eighty three point fourth (83.4) years old for women and seventy sis point three (76.3) for men, the highest in Europe. 7. High infant mortality rate. Well, also the infant mortality rate was high. 8. Disease death: scarlet fever, poliomyelitis, tuberculosis. But it isnt surprising, because there were diseases that know are eradicated like scarlet fever, poliomyelitis and tuberculosis 9. No hygienic conditions and contaminated water. and hygienic conditions were really poor and water was very very contaminated. ______________________________________________________________________ Apply the law to children like to adults. Pickpockets children and orphans. There were children who didnt have any money (some of them were orphans) and they stole wallets. Children:

Forced to work. Mines. Sold in orphanages to clean chimneys.

Finally, the child labor. Some children were forced to work. For example, some children were sold in orphanages to clean chimneys, because children are flexible and can climb quickly in the chimneys to clean it. Some children who worked in factories suffered phossy jaw, a disease caused for white phosphorus. Also, some children worked in mines. Their task consists to open and close some doors of the route of the small wagons in order to avoid gusts that could cause explosions. This task was made for children because the corridors were very small. Imagine, all day, in darkness

1.D. SITUATION OF WOMEN The life of women in the Victorian era focuses on family commitments. Women were seen as temples of love and purity. At the social level they hadnt rights: they couldnt participate in politics or study or work if you wanted to keep their social status. It was shameful for a woman to travel without being accompanied by a companion, a guardian or a husband his only destiny was marriage, but it was a social contract that did not participate, which was arranged by their parents. The girls were ready to get married and had to be innocent, virtuous, docile and obedient. She was obliged to obey her husband had the right to abuse her and even beat her, always protected by law. Dancing was a favourite pastime among most upper class women. The lower class women worked in factories, garment industries, laundries or several other jobs to support themselves. Another job for women in the working class was domestic service.

Then I explain the puristanism and double morality.

2. PURITANISM It was characterized by a deeply conservative morality, which promoted a strict sexual puritanism. Everything about sexuality began to be taboo, something secret that must be hidden. It covered about sex a cloak of silence: no one talked about anything related to it,

or even anything that would make a mere allusion to it. Pregnancy becomes taboo: the woman who is in that situation leaves little home, be seen as little as possible. Queen Victoria sent lengthen palace tablecloths that covered the legs of the table as a whole because the queen could incite men to remember a woman's leg.

2.A. DOUBLE STANDARD There was a sexual double standard. Parallel to the strict customs, there was an unfolding an underground world where rampant sexual adultery and prostitution. There were the "courtesans" (prostitutes) who attended the monarchs. In East London had many brothels, game rooms... It developed a drug street environment, and sex, as orgies, sex shows, gay relationships, child abuse...
