Many politicians debate whether more money should be infused into public schools. Newspapers like New York Times and New York Post use comics as a way to inform people of their political agenda. Khalil Bendib drew a very powerful comic about the budget cuts on education. The comic has president Bush hugging two men, one of them has the label of dictators and the other person is labeled as U.S Stooges. George Bush has a suit and tie while the two men have military style apparel. At the bottom left hand side there is a group of children that are visibly upset. The bottom right hand side shows two birds talking to one another. The title of the comic is on the top left of the comic and says On the Budget Front Theres Good News and Bad News. The wording is very important to understanding the meaning of this comic. George Bush explains the good and the bad news to the two men. The bad news is that there is no money for the schools of America. The good news being that there is plenty for the schools of the Americas. The difference of America and Americas is very important. America can be considered as the USA, while the Americas would include North, Central, and South America. While president Bush is talking to the two men, the two birds in the bottom right say Its his Leave No Thug Behind Policy. Leave No Thug Behind is a reference to George W. Bush No Child Left Behind policy. The NCLB is an act that President Bush put in place that would

increase funding to schools that had above average test score. At the same time it would decrease funding for schools that do not meet the average test scores. Therefore it would decrease the funding for schools. The conversation between George Bush and the two men is probably the most symbolic part of the comic. It insinuates that although we have no money for education here in the United States, we have the money to spend on helping other countries in the Americas. The facial features of the two men show that they are happy about what the President is telling them. Since the men are dictators they probably believe that it is great that the US get behind in education. George W. Bush looks melancholy but seems to be comforting the two men at the same time. Although the comic has a lot of open white space it also has a gray shading that makes the comic look gloomy. The fact that it brings out emotion make it pathos. Pathos is gaining appeal through their emotions. Pathos is regarded as the most efficient type of communication. This comic is certainly in favor of increase in funding for school. The sentence No Thug Left Behind shows that he is against the NCLB. The fact that he changed the word child to Thug implies that he believes that the act helps the wrong people. Thugs are typically considered as bad influences. The act is supposed to help children but he makes it seem like the act is helping bad people. The comic is very negative towards George Bush. The comic puts an emphasis on how George Bush is okay with spending money on other countries and not within his own country. The comic doesnt show that more money should be used for schools but makes the viewer more aware that US is spending money to help schools in other countries. The second comic is split into two sides. On the left side there is a mob of adults saying that all people have to pay the consequences of the financial problem. This comment seems very

rational and logical. Bring in the idea that government should be fair to everyone involved. Most of the adults are elderly. All of them are holding a ladder and have a smirk on their faces. All the people have clothing that a typical middle class adult would wear. A white male with glasses is holding a saw. He is most likely the leader of the group, he was in the center of the comic, and seems to be the biggest and most notable. On the second part of the comic there is big wall that divides the children and the adults from the first comic. There were five children and looking up in disbelief. The adults used the ladder from the first side to look over the wall to talk to the children. The adult are telling the children that all people have to suffer the consequences of the cuts. There is a sign on the children side of the wall that says education cuts. The sign and the wall paint the picture of the main idea. The sign symbolizes that the elderly feel that it is fair for school to get budget cuts. The wall divides people into different groups. The wall and the sign together show that when a group fails everyone in the group has to suffer. The educational system is no different and has to suffer budget cuts. So the main idea is that everyone has to suffer when a group is in a rut. The picture seems logical, and uses the logos philosophy. Logos is the opposite of the previous form used on the last comic which was Pathos. Logos has to deal with common sense. The comic paints the idea that adults believe that everyone should suffer the consequences of the recession. Both parts of the comic have blank space within them. The picture is very light and doesnt seem as emotional or as sad as the first one. The first one made you feel bad and want to act through your emotion. Both comics show the differences in opinions when it comes to the funding of education. Some believe that during tough times you have to put a priority on education. While others

believe that you have to make budget cuts to every governmental service when the country is in a recession. The first comic criticizes the way the President Bush reacted during the start of the recession. The second comic raises the fact that it is something that had to be done. These two represent two different ideals and relate to most Americans belief of the educational system. Pictures can express logic, emotion, and authority but the main reason pictures and comics are put in newspaper is to prove the artists point of view.
