Shrinkage in Castings
There are three types of shrinkage:
Volume
-Contraction of the liquid; -Transformation of the liquid to the solid; -Solid state contraction.
r2 = r1
r2 r1
1 3
For example: for Al, == 7%, r2= 0.41 r1 i.e. 7% shrinkage creates a void having a radius of over 40% of the sphere.

The Seven Feeding Rules Rule No.1: Heat Transfer Requirement (Chvorinov's Rule)
d
The feeder must solidify at the same time as, or later than, the casting.
i.e. Modulus of feeder Modulus of casting Normally Mf = 1.2 Mc d Modulus = Volume of casting Cooling surface area b As M increases, solidification time increases d a L

Approximately,
2 Vf Vc + Vf Vf Vc
Therefore, yield is only about 50% for aluminium. For steels,===3% and yield rises to ~78%.

To satisfy pressure requirement (i) Increase H:D ratio of feeders D H Often find H:D ~ 1 Better to use H:D ~ 1.5-2 (ii) Place feeders at highest point
