Tessellations: The relationship of angles among the shapes

Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I borrow this lesson?

Original lesson Math 7th 7-4.10-Explain the relationship of the angle measurements among shapes that tessellate. 7-4.9 Create tessellations with transformations.
Describe the lessons activities and content.

Description and Background Information Lesson Objectives

The students will figure out what the formula is to find the measure of interior angles.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson?

Students will be able to explain the relationship of the angle measurements among shapes that tessellate wit 80% accuracy. Students will be able to create tessellations with transformations with 80% accuracy.
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material?

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

I will vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material giving them hints to finding the formula.
How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept?

I will vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept by moving to harder problems.
How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?

I will vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English by giving them the opportunity to answer questions and practice speaking. Statement of Purpose
Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

You will use tessellations to make designs in art class. In Life Science and nature, the bees honeycomb is one of the most famous tessellations.
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?

Materials and Resources

I will need a laptop, starboard, and worksheets. The students will need notebooks and pencils.

Anticipatory Set

What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?

What kind of polygons do you see in the honeycomb? Part II: IMPLEMENTATION Pre-assessment Teacher Modeling or Demonstration Guided Practice Checking for Understanding Independent Practice
How will I find out what students already know about this topic?

Is there an easier way to find the measure of interior angles of polygons?

What will I do to show students what is expected?

I will find the measure of an interior angle using the formula.

What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?

Begin filling out a chart using a breakdown of the formula they just learned.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?

What does n stand for? What is n-2 going to give you? What is (n-2)180 going to give you?
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?

The students will fill the rest of the chart out by themselves. Closure
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?

What are the polygons that will tessellate? Explain why? Assessment (attach to lesson plan) Extension Activities
What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned?

Common Assessment
What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? How could you use your colleagues or community agencies to improve student performance?

Look at the different tessellations around your house. Technology

How will you use technology to assist students with learning the concepts? What technology will you use to enhance the delivery and comprehension of your content?

I will use the starboard which is interactive so the students can see themselves working on the problems. Connection Across the How will you connect this lesson with other content areas Tessellations are used in Art Class. Curriculum PART III: REFLECTION Strengths
across the curriculum?

Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the strengths of student engagement.

I broke the formula down so that they could see how it is used. Weaknesses
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the weaknesses of student engagement.

I did not allow the students to practice on their own long enough. Suggestions for Improvement
What would you change when teaching this lesson again?

Spend less time on the guided practice and more time on the independent practice.
