Pentecost Sunday, May 19
Pentecost originated as the Festival of Weeks in the Old Testament. In Leviticus 23:15-16,
we learn that the people of Israel were to count fifty days from the Passover Sabbath, seven
weeks and one day, until their offering of new grain. It was called the Festival of Weeks
because it was a week of weeks (7 weeks x 7 days) aftei the Passovei. By 1esus' time it was
called Pentecost fiom the Cieek woid foi "fiftieth day."
"When the day of Pentecost had come, they weie all togethei in one place. And suddenly from heaven
there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sit-
ting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of
them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them
ability" (Acts 2:1-4). For us Christians, Pentecost is significant because it was the day that the Holy
Spiiit descended upon 1esus' disciplesthe fiist time Cod's Spiiit came upon multiple people. That
day, thousands of people became followers of Jesus Christ.
Confirmation Class
We sometimes call Pentecost "the chuich's
biithday," because the handful of followeis of 1esus
became hundreds on that day. As we celebrate the
first time that people came together to form the
church, we traditionally welcome new members into
the fellowship.
Through the past several months, young peo-
ple in our congregation have participated in a confir-
mation class with Jonathan Jonas, our pastor. On
Pentecost Sunday, we expect several of them to con-
firm the promises made at their baptisms and to pro-
fess their faith in Jesus Christ. Please pray for the
members of our confirmation class as they try to dis-
cern whether God is calling them to become follow-
ers of Jesus Christ and members of our congregation
on that day.
Our own First UMC choir joins five other
area church choirs in this exciting music event. Each
choir will present one anthem, and all the choirs will
combine for three anthems, directed by Dr. Robert
Matthews, head of the choral department of Emory
and Henry. If you would like to participate in this
event, join us on Wednesday evening. Regular choir
rehearsal begins at 6:30pm, and we rehearse the mu-
sic for Singing with the Spirit from 7:30pm -8:00pm.
Please contact Bryan Underwood to know more.
Abingdon District Revival
Pleasant View United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 19, at 7:00 PM
An exciting, Spirit-filled day of worship continues as the churches of the Abingdon District of the United
Methodist Church gather for a one night revival service at Pleasant View United Methodist Church in Abingdon.
Jonathan Jonas and Bryan Underwood will be the preacher and worship leader for this special event. Mark your
calendar and plan to be part of this special evening of worship. Call the church office to arrange transportation.
Our first Stephen Ministry class has completed fifty hours of training, and our new Stephen Ministers are ready to
begin serving as caregivers. The Stephen Ministers and Stephen Leaders celebrated the completion of training in
their last class session (above), and we will commission the new Stephen Ministers in our May 5 worship services.
Stephen Leaders and Ministers pictured above are: Front Row: Margaret McKinnon, Carol Barker, Roxanna
Creasy, Peggy Frye, and Linda Huber. Second Row: Christie Wolfe, Deborah Armstrong, Teresa McNeil, Pam
Heath, Sally Moorer, and Marilyn Walker. Third Row: James McNeil, Jerry Hall, and Denton Staley.
The fifty hours of training for our first class of Stephen Ministers has come to an end, and on Sunday, May
5, ten members of our congregation will be commissioned as Stephen Ministers. Those to be commissioned are
Deborah Armstrong, Carol Barker, Roxanna Creasy, Peggy Frye, Pam Heath, Linda Huber, Sally Moorer, Teresa
McNeil, Denton Staley, and Christie Wolfe. When you see these people, please tell them how much you appreci-
ate the hard work and hours of study they have already put in to bring this important ministry to our congregation.
The training has been meaningful to them. As part of their assignment for this week, they each wrote what
Stephen Ministiy means to them. Heie's what thiee of them said:

"Novembei 16, 2O12 was the beginning of my Stephen Ministiy tiaining and as it comes to an end,
I have found it to be a rewarding and wonderful experience. The skills I have learned in our 50
hours of training have helped me discover things about myself and have equipped me with the abil-
ity to offer emotional and spiritual care. I am so thankful to our church for offering this ministry
and I feel that as a Stephen Ministei, along with Cod's help, I can make a diffeience in someone's
life."

"I believe that each peison has a special puipose foi theii life. Cod has a plan foi us. When I listen
to my heart I discover what I can do with my life for him! That is what I feel about our Stephen
Ministiy. I want to put Cod's love into action and shaie that with otheis who need suppoit, encoui-
agement, comfort, caring and Christian love as they go through challenging life situations. Through
oui teamwoik Stephen Ministiy effoit I believe we can make a positive diffeience in oui chuich."

"What does Stephen Ministiy mean to me! Becoming a Stephen Ministei will allow me an oppoi-
tunity to extend the love of Christ to those in need. Stephen Ministry classes have taught me that
this ministry must be Christ-centered in order to be effective. As caregivers we are taught to be
more Christ-centeied, compassionate, full of faith, skilled and tiustwoithy."

First United Methodist Church aims to assemble 40
health kits to help our Abingdon District reach its
goal of 300 health. Each kit should contain the in-
gredients listed below in the sizes listed. Generic
equivalents to brand names are just fine. Please do
not substitute ingredients or add extra ingredients to
the kits because this can cause delays in customs.

Two-gallon freezer bags are available in the church
office. Please bring your assembled kit to the church
office by Friday, May 31. Thank you!

2 bars soap
1 washcloth
1 small bottle Listerine*

2 toothbrushes
1 bottle childien's cough syiup (small)
1 bottle Aleve* (24 count)
1 bottle Advil* (24 count)

Pack all items in a 2 gallon zip lock bag, which is
available in the church office.
The United Methodist Women met on April
10th and enjoyed the spring flowers and light re-
freshments provided by Virginia Circle. Linda
Crowder welcomed members and opened the meet-
ing with prayer. Gengie Fisher gave the devotion
and we had a quick sing-along of hymns with Alan
Jackson.
Jonathan Jonas gave us an update on the
progress of the church renovation and we are happy
to know the bidding process will begin very soon.
He also explained the referral process and many
ways the new Stephen Ministry will add support to
our church members who may be experiencing a
difficult time in their lives.
Special thanks were expressed to Shirley
Lockhart, Anna Moore, Sara Musick, and Linda
Crowder for helping serve the Abingdon District
Ministers luncheon in the Fellowship Hall on April
9th, and to Norman Brown for preparing a wonder-
ful meal.
Our program was designed to help our
members know each other better. Members were
asked to give a few brief facts about themselves.
Where were you born? Where did you go to school?
We learned that the members present had grown up
in Georgia, Florida, Indiana, Northern Virginia,
West Virginia, Roanoke, Southwest Virginia, and
five were born and raised in Smyth County.
How and why we came to live in Marion
was very interesting. Funny stories began to be told,
and to make a long story short, if you missed this
meeting, you missed an infoimative and "laugh 'til
you ciy" event! We all agieed, we aie blessed to live
in the peaceful cocoon of Marion and First United
Methodist Church.
On May 9th, the UMW has been asked to
provide and serve the meal for Food and Fellow-
ship. At our next meeting on May 10th, Deborah
Circle will serve as hostess and Ruth Circle will feed
the UMY. Our United Methodist Women organiza-
tion meetings are open to women of all ages and all
religious denominations. We invite you to join us
on May 1Oth at 1O o'clock in the Iellowship Hall.

Blessings to all,
Linda Crowder

The Last Word
by Jonathan Jonas
"hcn thc day cf Fcntcccst had ccmc, thcy wcrc all tcgcth-
er in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a
sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire
house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire,
appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of
them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and be-
gan to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them
abtltty." Acts 2:1-4

These are some of the very most important
verses of scripture to us, for our entire experience of
God depends upon these verses.
Over the past several weeks (and months) it
has been my privilege and pleasure to spend hours
with some of our young people who have participat-
ed in the Wednesday afternoon confirmation class.
Throughout the class, we have tried to understand
wheie we fit into the histoiy of Cod's inteiaction
with humankind, and one thing we've emphasized is
that Cod hasn't always been so accessible.
Through the Hebrew scriptures, or the Old
Testament as we call it, Cod's inteiaction is with one
or two selected people at a timepatriarchs, judges,
prophets, kings, priests, etc. Our Hebrew ancestors
depended on these special intermediaries to teach
them Cod's will and even to facilitate theii woiship
as they offered sacrifices on behalf of the people.
Jesus was revolutionary because he was Em-
manuel oi "Cod with us." When he walked and
talked and preached and healed, people could see
God in a way they never had before. That explains
why the crowds always gathered around him.
Jesus promised his disciples that God the
Father would send the Holy Spirit upon them, so
that God would literally live within them, and the
sciiptuie passage above desciibes Cod's fulfillment
of that promise. But lest we think that God was once
again working through special people, a little later in
Acts 2, Petei tells the ciowd that Cod's Spiiit is
available to all peopleeven us.
In fact, the Holy Spirit is the only way that
you and I have experienced God. So, when you have
felt the presence of God close by, maybe even within
you, that's the Holy Spiiit! When you have sought
guidance and finally felt that God revealed an an-
swei, that's the Holy Spiiit! When youi heait is on
fire because the love of God feels so real to you,
that's the Holy Spiiit!
God gave a world-changing gift that day on
Pentecost. The last word is always AMEN.
Food Pantry Update

We had a good crowd waiting in line for food at the Food Pantry on Thursday April 18, and thanks to Norman,
Gene, and all volunteers we were able to give out 230 boxes of food!!
There seemed to be quite a few new people signing up for food this time, so that tells us that the need in our area is
growing each month. As the children get out of school for the summer, there will be lots of extra mouths to feed in
some households.
Norman and Gene have made an exerted effort to see that we have the food we need to carry out this ministry
each month, but none of this would be possible without the support of everyone else. We are very blessed that
people see the need to volunteer in this endeavor.
Thanks again for all you do if you take part in the Food Pantry whatever
job you do. Many people are helping out throughout the month and then
pack food and give it out; help feed people at Food and Fellowship on Food
Pantry day, work in office, drive the bus, do paperwork, pick up food boxes
and get them to peison's cai, donate items thioughout the month, and put
money the our church banks in the pews. Eveiy peison's donation of time,
effort, food and money makes this a success.
Looks like spring may have sprung let's hope so!!!

Another segment of our GriefShare ministry
concluded on Tuesday, April 16 with a memorial
service and potluck meal. This ministry has become
a blessing to our entire community! Fewer and fewer
of the participants in the GriefShare ministry are
members of First United Methodist Church. That
means we are increasing our outreach to the larger
community around us!
We thank God for this great ministry and for
the volunteers who make it possible. Linda Huber
and Peggy Lootens partnered to begin the ministry
here at First UMC. Pat Albano has recently joined
Linda on the leadership team.
GriefShare will resume in the months ahead.
Until then, if you know someone who is grieving
and who might benefit from the opportunity to share
the jouiney "fiom mouining to joy," please contact
Linda, Pat, or Jonathan Jonas.
Our most recent DivorceCare support group
has suspended its meetings until more people are
interested in participating. Like GriefShare, it is a
ministry that combines learning and support to offer
a holistic ministry for people who are navigating
through separation or divorce.
Each participant receives a workbook for
study and reflection, and each gathering of the group
features video curriculum in which a variety of gifted
presenters offer teaching moments to help partici-
pants learn more about what they may be experienc-
ingspiritually, emotionally, or psychologically.
In addition to these learning opportunities,
DivorceCare allows participants to share their own
experiences and to support and nurture each other as
they share the journey together. To know more or to
become part of the next group, please call the church
office, or speak with Jonathan Jonas.
