Unique and awe-inspiring. A heart-breaking theatrical gem, which will deeply move those fortunate enough to witness it. ThreeWeeks Following celebrated runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and York Theatre Royal, one-to-watch company Real Circumstance take their stirring story of love and heartbreak to venues across the East, returning to the landscapes that originally inspired this critically acclaimed work. The tour, which covers five venues in the region, begins in Colchester where the company are based and will precede their London premiere at Theatre503. Tom asked Grace out when they were sitting on the Quay. She was fifteen, he a year older, and they were very happy together. But then she had to go away something to do with her parents. So he sat on the Quay waiting for her. And one day she came back. The production was developed through the companys own distinctive process, which blends devising and improvisation with traditional scripting, aiming to create emotionally detailed, resonant and truthful work. Characters originally inspired by real people are improvised and developed with the cast to explore thematic structures and narratives, which over time are developed into the final work through a process of writing, re-writing and further improvisation. Real Circumstance's Artistic Director, Dan Sherer said : The play was inspired by wanting to make a simple love story, and then taking the circumstances of that story very seriously. When I started making Our Share Of Tomorrow, I thought it would be about a romantic love, and it is, but as the piece grew it became a story about the love between parent and a child; and then a story about loss. What does it mean to love somebody who is no longer there? Or to love somebody whom it is impossible to love? I grew up on the Quay of an Essex fishing village, and there is a lyricism and a poetry that belongs to that environment, which I wanted to capture - a feeling of wanting to hold back the passage of time; to not have to grow up. Real Circumstance develops plays through extensive improvisation, where the actors build their characters over a long period of time, and then improvise until that material is honed into a finished piece. This approach, strongly influenced by Mike Leigh, gives our work a level of detail and emotional clarity that is really unusual. Our Share Of Tomorrow is the best example of our work to date. It combines a clarity of performance and a depth brought about by improvisation, with the precision of authorship. This is united through a lyrical, theatrical aesthetic to make a piece that is deeply moving, and resonant to those who experience it. Real Circumstance is a company dedicated to exploring new ways of playmaking; to developing emergent artists; and to raising the profile of the East of England as a source of creative work . With a

growing reputation for powerful, innovative theatre, Our Share of Tomorrow signalled the companys third major work for the stage, with previous productions including LOUGH/RAIN by Declan Feenan and Clara Brennan (double nominated for The Stage Awards for Acting Excellence) and LIMBO by Declan Feenan, both in coproduction with York Theatre Royal. Our Share of Tomorrow is the first play by Real Circumstances Dan Sherer, whose directing credits for the company include LOUGH/RAIN (Edinburgh Fringe 2008, York Theatre Royal, The Junction Cambridge) and LIMBO (Edinburgh Fringe 2007, York Theatre Royal, Arcola Theatre, Mercury Theatre Colchester). His second play Under a Tree at the End of Time is currently in development having previously received a grant from ACE Escalator and the Peggy Ramsay Foundation. His next production will be Ibsen's The Lady From The Sea at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, this August. Previously Dan was staff director to Mike Leigh at the Royal National Theatre for Two Thousand Years. Dan trained at the National Theatre Studio and RADA.
