Storage Engineer Description & Responsibilities


Summary: Hands on Engineer who works closely with Sidley Austin IT and business groups for the planning and monitoring of the Firm's internal network storage environments, particularly Network Attached Storage (NAS), but also including Storage Area Networks (SAN), direct attached storage and data protection.

Accountability - Success in this role will be determined by the following: Performs support, maintenance, project activities and associated reporting functions with minimum supervision from the team lead. Demonstrates technical expertise to best meet the needs and objectives of the assigned project, assignment, or task. Provides excellent troubleshooting skill set, as it pertains to the data storage product arena.

Duties and Responsibilities: Assures the support and maintenance of the Firms storage environments and related components including monthly and/or ad hoc status reporting.

Ensures the success of the functional Systems teams, as it relates to storage, backup and related technologies.

Works with sponsors and other stakeholders to achieve cross-functional goals.

Applies advanced and comprehensive functional knowledge to resolve complex issues.

Develops and implements changes to processes to ensure continuous process improvement and effective governance.

Interacts regularly and effectively with the Firms IT Leadership Teams

Contributes to the on-going maintenance of Storage Management policies, procedures and communications

Supports a continuously improving environment by contributing to the problem management process and performs corrective and/or ongoing actions as assigned by the team lead.

Stays aware and knowledgeable of critical issues, opportunities and constraints affecting the availability and manageability of the Firms storage environment

Serves as role model and mentor to other team members, upholds the Firms values, exhibits ethical behavior and shares knowledge and expertise. Education and/or Experience: Required: 5 years minimum hands on experience supporting EMC Celerra NAS devices.

BA/B.S. in Computer related curriculum or equivalent work experience

5+ years storage support and management experience

Ability to get things done with minimal oversight

Ability to lead teams and work on teams as a contributor

Display effective time-management skills

Demonstrated competency in Storage Management, including Disk and/or Tape Backup-related support, maintenance and reporting

5 years minimum hands on experience supporting EMC CLARiiON arrays.

4 years of hands on experience supporting Hitachi AMS and Thunder SAN arrays.

Experience in the disciplines of Disaster Recovery, HSM, ILM and advanced backup technologies such as Virtual Tape Libraries

Excellent Vendor Management skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Excellent troubleshooting, reporting and performance improvement skills

Ability to work off hours for scheduled and emergency maintenance and/or upgrades.

Preferred: Minimum 12 months at current level

Understand basic corporate finance, management and accounting principles

Experience supporting Hitachi AMS and Thunder disk arrays.

Commvault and other disk backup products

EMC disk products (CLARiiON, Centera, Celerra, NAS, etc.)

Cisco MDS series fibre channel products

EMC Control Center (ECC) and other storage management software.

EMC Proven Professional

Storage Virtualization

Data De-duplication
