Topic: Order of Operations in Math

Grade: 8th Key Vocabulary: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, and Addition and Subtraction (PAMDAS)

Introductory Activity
Objective: Students will be identify and begin using the Order of Operations when simplifying and solving equations. Warm-Up on the Chalkboard: With this equation students will exercise their critical This equation will be written on the chalkboard thinking skills. Although they are not familiar with how to come about to solve the problem, it is a challenge they will be willing to face. 2+6*(9/3)^4= x This equation will intrigue the students interest therefore will create for a smooth transition

Follow-Up Activity
Objective: Students will use their critical thinking skills to use the Order of Operations in order to simplify equations. Students will identify which order of operation is needed to solve an equation Stdens will be able to use their previous math skills and accommodate new ones such as the use of order of operations. Number 1 Number 2 Teacher: Teacher: Will provide a worksheet that narrows down the focus Will introduce the procedure to solve the warm-up to each specific operation. activity. It will begin with solving equations focusing on Ask if anyone solved the equation and if so how they parenthesis. came about it. Building off of that work on Exponents Will introduce the rules: Building off of parenthesis and exponents. The worksheet will give students practice working on 1. Parentheses: 2+6*(9/3)^4 -> 2+6*(3)^4 = building language; students will become familiar with 2. Exponents: 2+6*(3)^4 ->2+6*(81) = all the order of operations. This is different from a 3. Multiplication and Division: 2+ 6*(81) -> 2+ (486) = regular class because by the 8th grade they should have learned this by now but because they are ESL students they are learning it at this level.

4. Addition and Subtraction: 2+(486) = 488 =x Accounting for Students differences:

The worksheet provides students a step-by-step process that helps them solve equations.

Setting up the worksheet, with focusing on one order of operation at a time allows clear understanding of where the student has its difficulties. Identifying where a student struggles will be the first step and the teacher can assist and provide student with a different method to solve the equation. Another way to provide assistance for the struggling student is to set up the student who is having difficulty in one area with another student that is excelling at that particular area.
