Student-Friendly Standards I can describe what is given up when a choice is made.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will ask students to imagine they are given $5 a week for doing chores around the house. Students will write a few quick sentences in their journals describing what they would do with that money. 2. Students will share what theyve written with the class. 3. Teacher will elaborate using student responses (assuming some students spent immediately and some saved) by stating each student made a choice just now about how to spend their allowance. 4. Teacher will use the Elmo and a blank sheet of paper to write Save and Spend in two columns. Write down positives and negatives of each using students help. 5. Explain that neither choice was bad, but each student gave up something when making their choice. Students that saved gave up the immediate gratification of buying a toy or some candy. Students that spent gave up the possibility of buying a larger more expensive toy or more candy. 6. Explain that with every choice, something is given up. Use several examples such as:

An adult that decides to call in sick to work gains a day off, but loses a day of pay. A child that decides to do his/her homework right loses time to play with his/her friends but gains knowledge.

7. Ask students to work with their groups to generate 2 more examples of what is lost and gained when a choice is made. 8. Groups will share their examples with the class. Teacher will write each groups examples on paper under Elmo and elaborate further on each example. 9. Students will write in their journals the loss from each groups example. 10. Teacher will ask the students to write down the loss and gain from the students decision to come to school today. 11. CLOSURE: Students will share their answer to the question with their group before turning in their journals. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The assessment will be the students journal responses throughout the lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. The journal entries will show if students understand the loss from each choice. The journal entries include the students being able to copy the loss from each groups example, and a personal response to the teachers question.
