Title of Unit: 3rd Grade Geography Title of Lesson: Naming and understanding the locations of the states.

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: Students will continue learning the names and locations of each state as seen on the map of the United States. Students will practice using the Smart board. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3 Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure step 1. Large group for steps 2-5. Individual practice using the worksheet provided for step 6. C. Materials: Computer with Internet connection White board Name the States worksheet Dry erase marker Smart board Access to website: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/USA_Geography/USA_G0_click_1024.html D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G6.3.6 Locate and name the states around Nevada.

Student-Friendly Standards G6.3.6 I can place the name to each state using a blank map of the United States.

E. Procedure: 1. Briefly review lesson from day 1 using the jigsaw maps created by the students. Explain they will be practicing naming each state correctly on a map using a game on the Smart Board. 2. Divide class into two teams. 3. Give a name to each team (team red, team blue) and write on white board to keep a tally score. 4. 1 member of each team gets a chance to come up to the Smart board and choose the correct state that matches the name. The game delivers names by region. Two attempts are allowed before the correct state flashes yellow. Team members can help only after the student gets a chance to choose the state him/herself.

5. Continue until all states have been chosen. 6. Students will work on the Name the States worksheet independently. 7. CLOSURE: Wrap-up lesson with a review of what was taught. Explain that tomorrow students will learn more about the states and will begin learning the capitals too. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? 1. The Label the States worksheet will be used as the student assessment. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. 1. I will be checking to ensure the state names are matched with the state and spelled correctly.
