Title of Unit: 5th Grade History Title of Lesson: Native American Culture Submitted By: Jamie Holst

A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan is a continuation of the previous day. Students will continue learning about Native American culture. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 5th Skill Level: on level Grouping: Whole group for procedure steps 1-6. Independent practice for step 7. C. Materials: 1 copy of the book North American Indians by Douglas & Marie Gorsline. D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o H1.5.1 Identify and describe Native North American life and cultural regions prior to European contact. H1.5.2 Identify and describe the attributes of Native American nations in the local region and North America.

Student-Friendly Standards I can name a Native American tribe and explain what life was like before colonization.

E. Procedure: 1. Teacher will review concepts from the previous day. Students posters from yesterday will be hung around the room; teacher will walk around and review the information on each. 2. Explain that these are only a few of the Native American tribes that exist. There are hundreds of different tribes in North America. 3. Teacher will read the book North American Indians by Douglas Gorsline. Students will write down the tribes they hear in their journal during the book and any facts related to the tribe. 4. During reading, teacher will stop periodically to discuss the book and check for comprehension. 5. Class discussion about the book. Students will share what they found interesting and if they heard anything that they learned about yesterday. 6. Students will share with their table what they wrote down in their journals. Students will continue adding information that they might have missed during the read.

7. Students will work independently writing a journal entry based on one of the Native American tribes. Students will be told to choose a tribe and to imagine they are a member of that tribe. They will write a 2 paragraph minimum entry in their journal about a day in the life of the _____ tribe. Students will be instructed to use specific terms that they learned about the last two days. 8. CLOSURE: Teacher will remind students that we have learned about Native American life of only a few tribes throughout the country and that this is the way they lived prior to colonization. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? The students journals will be used to measure understanding for this lesson. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will read the students journals after this lesson. Ill look for both the information they wrote down during the read and after when they discussed information with their peers. I will also read their paragraph story about a day in the life of a ____ tribe member. I will check to make sure the students followed directions with the length of their entry and the content looking for specific vocabulary related to the lesson.
