Using this Booklet
Why a prayer book?
e idea of using a prayer book seems strange to many
Christians today. For some, experience has shown that it can
quickly become mindless repetition, devoid of spiritual life.
Others have never used written prayers but fear they will be
stiing or get in the way of real, authentic intimacy with God.
Many of us have never even considered it.
What is all the more interesting is that this situation is entirely
new. (When looking at the long history of the church, anything
in the last 300 or so years is new.) rough the life of the
church, written prayers have always played a central part of
worshipping Godin fact, this traces back to well before Jesus.
For thousands of years, the Jews recited written prayers,
including the Shema: Hear, O Israel! e Lord your God, the
Lord is one! And you shall love the Lord your God with all
your heart, soul, mind and strength... Each day began with
these words, without fail. e early church continued this
tradition and expanded it, incorporating hymns and prayers in
worship of Jesus, the Messiah.
I believe the question we need to ask is not, what is wrong with
using a prayer bookbut rather, what is right about it that it
persisted for so many centuries?
Each era has its own particular strengths and weaknesses. A
strength we enjoy today is our commitment to a real, authentic
relationship with Jesus. Praise the Lord that this is so! We are
no longer content to merely echo theology and doctrine
because our parents believed. We want to know God ourselves.
3
And so we want to speak to Him out of our own hearts, rather
than through a formal prayer book. is is good!
I believe that strength has also very often blinded us to a
corresponding weaknessin our desire for authenticity, we are
often a slave to our whims. If we do not feel like praising God,
we do not have the resources to x our attention on Him and
worship anyway. We may even feel that it would be wrong to do
so. But this means that, very often, we do not have to tools to
ght to see God when our vision is hazy. Whether we feel like it
or not, God is deserving of our delight. Are we able to sit still
and focus on Him for long enough to enjoy Him?
e answer to this question will largely depend on the tools we
have available, and how consistently we put them to use. We
have the Word, which holds God up to be seen and praised;
and we have His Spirit, who makes that Word come alive. But
do we have a consistent way of applying ourselves to ask for
help in seeing, and then looking?
is is the point of any prayer book. It is not my assumption
that a prayer is better because someone wrote it in lofty
vocabulary. But I do assume that saying a prayer someone else
wrote is better than no prayer at all. And I also assume that, on
the day I do not feel like praying, and do not have the words, I
will only do it if I am in the habit.
About this prayer book
is particular prayer book is an adaptation of the Book of
Common Prayer. It has been stripped of any exclusively
Anglican language (of which there was little to begin with), and
it has also been modied to work better for an individual
saying these prayers alone, or for families.
4
But it has undergone another, more important change: for the
most part, this booklet does not contain many written prayers.
It has a few. But for the most part, this prayer book invites you
to engage with the Word, and use it as a springboard to
respond with your own prayers.
e Daily Prayers are broken into four hoursMorning,
Midday, Evening and Night. (Although theyre called hours,
you can probably get through them in twenty minutes, unless
you want to spend more time meditating on the Scripture.)
You may choose to pray whichever hours work best for you,
though I recommend at least Morning and Evening, if possible.
You may t them into your schedule, but its best to keep them
near the time theyre written for.
Each hour includes Psalms, as have the daily prayers of
Christians throughout the centuries. But this particular prayer
book invites you to select psalms according to the state of your
emotions as you enter prayer, so that the words of David and
the other Psalmists echo your own heart. Youll nd a listing of
Psalms by emotion in back.
At Morning and Evening Prayer, youre invited to read selection
from the one of the testaments and a Gospel. ere are many
one-year reading plans you may use, though you might want to
slow these down and take two years.
Finally, each hour invites you to pray the promises. In the back
of this booklet youll nd an index of promises we nd in
Scripture arranged by topic. It is a vital part of our walk with
God that we put our hope in His precious and very great
promises, by which we become partakers of the Divine nature,
having escaped the corruption that is in the world because of
sinful desire. (2 Peter 1:4) I invite you to choose a promise
which speaks to the particular circumstances you are facing,
5
which will encourage and strengthen you today. Perhaps linger
with one for a week, and then select another.
My own prayer is that this booklet will be a toolone that
helps you turn your vision to God and rejoice in Him. As you
pray, may you behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus
Christ, and so be transformed! (2 Cor. 3:18)
To God alone be the Glory!

Morning Prayer
Invitatory
e prayers begin by inviting Gods presence and meditating on
His power and goodness.
O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your
praise.
Read one of the following psalms and its response:
Psalm p
Oh come, let us sing to the Lord;
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!
For the Lord is a great God,
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth;
the heights of the mountains are his also.
e sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker!
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
and the sheep of his hand.
Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,
as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,
when your fathers put me to the test
and put me to the proof,
though they had seen my work.
7
For forty years I loathed that generation
and said, ey are a people
who go astray in their heart,
and they have not known my ways.
erefore I swore in my wrath,
ey shall not enter my rest.
Response
Lord, you have made all things, and we are your people. Yet
I am so prone to ignore your voice. Help me today to be
attentive and to listen when you speak; and speak the
things during this time of prayer that I need to hear to
follow you today.
Psalm roo
Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!
Serve the Lord with gladness!
Come into his presence with singing!
Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Response
Father, I belong to you, and you deserve songs of joy and
praise. I so easily forget how good you are and fail to
delight in you. Please make me feel your presence and
faithfulness during this time of prayer, so that I can rejoice
in you.
8
Psalm o,
May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
e earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us;
let all the ends of the earth fear him!
Response
God, make the light of your face shine on mebecause
when I see you for who you are, I will rejoice and call others
to enjoy you, also. Make me happy in you during this time
of prayer, so that today I would live to make others happy
in you.

Night Prayer
Invitatory
e prayers begin by inviting Gods presence and meditating on
His grace and forgiveness.
O God, make speed to save me;
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Confession
Now, at the close of the day, is a good time for an examination of
the day. Where was God faithful? How did He show Himself?
And in what ways did I fail to trust Him?
To confess means to say the sameto call things for what they
are, how God sees them. After making specic confession of sin,
read the following:
Almighty God, our heavenly Father:
We have sinned against you,
through our own fault,
in thought, and word, and deed,
and in what we have left undone.
For the sake of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ,
forgive us all our oenses;
and grant that we may serve you
in newness of life,
to the glory of your Name. A.
21
Read one of the following psalms and its response:
Psalm
Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness!
You have given me relief when I was in distress.
Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!
O men, how long shall my honor
be turned into shame?
How long will you love vain words and seek after lies?
But know that the Lord has set apart
the godly for himself;
the Lord hears when I call to him.
Be angry, and do not sin;
ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.
Oer right sacrices,
and put your trust in the Lord.
ere are many who say,
Who will show us some good?
Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!
You have put more joy in my heart
than they have when their grain and wine abound.
In peace I will both lie down and sleep;
for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Response
Lord, your presence is better than riches or the approval of
man. Tonight as I sleep, allow me to rest in your love and
care.
Psalm r
In you, O Lord, do I take refuge;
let me never be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me!
Incline your ear to me;
22
rescue me speedily!
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me!
For you are my rock and my fortress;
and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;
you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
Response
Father, I confess that my life is not in my hands; it is in
yours. I hand over my fears, my hopes, this night and all my
future to you. I trust you, because you are the one who has
done everything to redeem my life.
Psalm pr
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say to the Lord, My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.
For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will nd refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that ies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
23
You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling placethe
Most High, who is my refuge
no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent
you will trample underfoot.
Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name.
When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him.
With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.
