III B. Tech II Semester (R07) Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2013 THERMAL ENGINEERING - II (Mechanical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 80 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) Describe the method of finding the calorific value of coal. Describe how cooling correction is obtained in this method. (b) In a regenerative cycle, the inlet conditions are 4 MN/m2 and 4000C. Steam is bled at 1 MN/m2 in regenerative heating. The exit pressure is 80 kN/m2. Neglecting pump work. Determine the efficiency of the cycle. 2 (a) What is the function of a steam boiler? How are boilers classified? Give the basis on which the classification is based. Also give the name of at least one boiler of each type according to the above classification. Calculate the mass of flue gases flowing through the chimney when the draught produced is equal to 1.9 cm of water. Temperature of flue gases is 2900C and ambient temperature is 200C. The flue gases formed per kg of fuel burnt are 23 kg. Neglect the losses and take the diameter of the chimney as 1.8 m. An adiabatic steam nozzle is designed for a discharge rate of 10 kg/s of steam from 10 bar and 4000C to a back pressure of 1 bar. The nozzle efficiency is 0.92 and the frictional loss is assumed to take place in the diverging portion of the nozzle only. Assume a critical pressure ratio of 0.5457. Determine the throat and exit areas. The following data refer to one stage of an impulse turbine: Steam velocity = 500 m/s. Blade speed = 200 m/s; nozzle angle = 200. Exit angle of moving blades = 250. Steam flow = 5 kg/s. Neglecting the effect of friction when passing through passages, determine: (i) The inlet angle of moving blade. (ii) The power developed. (iii) The axial thrust and (iv) The diagram efficiency. The following data refer to a particular stage of a Parsons reaction turbine: Speed of the turbine = 1500 rpm. Mean diameter of the rotor = 1 m. Stage efficiency: 80%. Blade outlet angle = 20o. Speed ratio = 0.7. Determine the available isentropic enthalpy drop in the stage. (a) (b) State the comparison between jet and surface condensers. Calculate the vacuum efficiency of a condenser from the following data: Vacuum at steam inlet to condenser = 725 mm. Barometer = 760 mm. Hot well temperature = 26.4oC. Is the use of regenerator in a simple cycle gas turbine limited? Discuss the lubricating system of gas turbine. With the help of a neat diagram, explain the principle and various classifications of jet propulsion systems. *****
