Conclusion
The main task of the experiment was to observe the various flow pattern that can be achieved by the use of different impellers with and without the use of baffles, to show the power consumed by a mixer varies with speed, type of impeller, and with the inclusion of baffles and to predict the power absorbed by a large mixer using the fluid mixing apparatus provided as a model. For the first part of the experiment it was seen that how the impeller affects the flow pattern. There were three types of impeller; paddle, propeller and turbine. For each of these impellers, with and without baffles, a different flow pattern was observed. According to our observations most effective impeller is propeller which is an axial-flow impeller. Turbulence was minimum while propeller is running. Other ones are radial-flow impellers. Consequently, it can be said that axial-flow impellers are more effective than radial-flow impellers. Moreover, it was observed that there was more homogeneous agitation when the tank was baffled. It causes drag force increment but an effective agitation is occurred. The next step of the experiment was developing a power consumption profile for different parameters and examines how consumed power is affected with these parameters. Drag force was the main factor of calculations and it was seen that drag force is directly related with power consumed. When the baffle was used, drag force increased and accordingly power consumption increased. Although when paddle was running drag force and power consumption was maximum value, when propeller was running power consumption was minimum value so it can be said that propeller is most effective one. This situation shows us drag force is related with effectiveness of agitation. Another important point is, during the experiment system is run at different velocities. In results and discussion part it is shown how angular velocity affects power consumption. It can be obviously seen that when velocity increases, power consumption increases too. As a recommendation, more different types of impeller and liquid may be used to observe more flow-patterns and examine effects on power consumption. Consequently, it was seen how the various flow pattern that can be achieved by the use of different impellers with and without the use of baffles. As a result for a good agitation baffles are essential and axial-flow pattern makes a homogeneous agitation. Also it was shown that the power consumed by a mixer varies with speed, type of impeller, and with the inclusion of baffles. Minimum power consumption is occurred when propeller is running and maximum power consumption is occurred when paddle is running.
