A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies unit is designed for 1st grade students to introduce them to information about the shape of the Earth and its continents and oceans. This lesson uses the 1st Grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family (p.74-77) and Montessori lessons Land/Water Globe & Continent Globe. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st Grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group reading and discussion, independent for activity and assessment C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st Grade Social Studies Book: School and Family (p.74-77) Reading Skill (Unit Resources p.18) for each student (see last page of lesson plan for sample) Land/Water Globe (Pictured on last page) Continent Globe (Pictured on last page) Paper & pencils Social Studies Journals for each child D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards G5.1.1 Differentiate between and identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms ocean and continent. Student-Friendly Standards I can identify water and land on a map and globe and use the terms continent and ocean.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 74 Get Set to Read Explain the Reading Skill students will complete as we read Introduce the land/water globe, show the continent globe & compare Introduce the vocabulary (continent, ocean)

2. As a class, read p. 74-77, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 3. Students should record information on their Reading Skill page while we are reading.

4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding. Focus on questions about geography. 5. CLOSURE: Discuss the Vocabulary and Main Idea from the Lesson Review section of TE 77. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Students will write in their Social Studies journal, answering: What are two things you learned about oceans and continents? Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Using a Rubric 4 Entry identifies 2 properties of continents and oceans with correct spelling and mechanics; 3 Entry identifies 2 properties of continents and oceans with some spelling & mechanics errors; 2 Entry identifies 1 property of continents and oceans with some spelling & mechanics errors; 1 Entry is incomplete or incorrectly identifies properties of continents and oceans. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The easiest part of the lesson will be teaching the difference of land and water. Students love the hands on model of the globes and they will easily recognize water and land. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I find the most challenging part of this lesson will be the reading of the text as I find 1st graders to be at many various reading levels. I would have them follow along as we read it aloud together so that all the students will have understanding of the text. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension of this lesson, I would use the Extend Lesson 1 (p.78-79) about the Pacific Ocean. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who are having trouble understanding this lesson, I would use the Reteach Mini Lesson described at the bottom of TE 77. We would work together filling out the T-Chart. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

This lesson seems age appropriate and complete as written. I would not change anything. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? As with any lesson, the most difficult is preparing an authentic assessment that is not always a written response. I am more comfortable with observation and oral questions as an assessment of this age rather than written responses as these little ones are still learning how to write complete sentences, etc
