Travis Pearson Science Lesson Plan

Time: 9:20-10:05 Group #2 April 16, 2013 Formation of various land forms and how they change through erosion and deposition. Procedures: Students will use Kagan strategy to discuss their prior knowledge on Land forms and erosion. Any group that has not presented to the class will do so right away. Students will be lead outside where we will see a model of erosion and deposition. Teacher will have a bucket of dirt from home and a bucket of water. Dirt will be dumped in a pile to represent a mountain and the water will represent rain. Students will observe what happens to the pile of dirt and the water as it is dumped on the "mountain." Class will take notes on their observations. Back in class teacher will lead a discussion of what they observed and how it relates to land forms and erosion.

Standards: (5)2.6 - Describe how unbalanced forces (push or pull) cause objects to change their motion (speed, direction, or both). P.5.B.1 - Students know that, when an unbalanced force is applied to an object, the object either speeds up, slows down, or goes in a different direction. E/S (5)2.7 - Describe how the strength of a force and the mass of an object influence the amount of change in an objects motion. o P.5.B.2 - Students know how the strength of a force and mass of an object influence the amount of change in an objects motion. E/S (5)2.8 - Explain that objects move towards the Earth when they are released in the air or on ramps due to the force of gravity. P.5.B.5 - Students know Earth's gravity pulls any object toward it without touching it. E/S SL.5.1c - Pose and respond to specific questions by making comments that contribute to the discussion and elaborate on the remarks of others. SL.5.4 - Report on a topic or text or present an opinion, sequencing ideas logically and using appropriate facts and relevant, descriptive details to support main ideas or themes; speak clearly at an understandable pace. Daily Objective: Content Objectives: I will inform the class of the group's findings on our assigned land form. Language Objectives: I will use my speaking skills to convey the information our group found from our research. Academic Language Function: Inform (Characteristics of ___________ are ___________. )

Concept and Skill Development and Application: Students will discuss with their groups their findings from their research. Students will organize their findings and prepare to present their information in front of the class. Students will show respect and appreciation for those students who are presenting. Students will use their speaking skills to share their groups' findings.

Students will use the model to apply it to previous knowledge and build their understanding of land forms and erosion.

Guided/Independent/Group Practice: Whole class viewing the model demonstration Small group discussion of the model individual note taking during the demonstration

Kagan Strategies: Rally Robin to discuss what they saw from the model

Homework Assignments: None

Long-Term Memory Review: Students will use their organizing writing skills to organize their findings on their land forms and how they will present to the class Students will use their research skills to work with their group Students will work collaboratively to prepare their presentation of their findings.

Materials: Projector Audio enhancement system Lined paper for their research Bucket of dirt and a bucket of water

Assessing: Groups will be assessed on how well they answered the three questions that they are researching: How the land form came to be? Where can we find this land form? and What are the characteristics that distinguishes it from the other land forms?
