REACTION PAPER

Nestls objectives are to be recognized as the world leader in Nutrition, Health and Wellness, trusted by all its stakeholders, and to be the reference for financial performance in its industry. As the worlds leading Nutrition Health and Wellness Company NESTLE have a unique opportunity to help address the food and water crises; in particular the specific nutrition challenges facing consumers at a local level from over nutrition to under nutrition including micronutrient deficiencies. This double burden of malnutrition and the related stress on already overstretched healthcare systems is a pressing challenge for us all. The NESTLE ROADMAP is intended to create alignment for people behind a cohesive set of strategic priorities that will accelerate the achievement of NESTLE objectives. These objectives demand from the people a blend of long-term inspiration needed to build for the future and short-term entrepreneurial actions, delivering the necessary level of performance. In line with Nestls famous tag line Good Food, Good Life , Nestle aims to lead industry efforts to help ensure consumers everywhere have the right choice and availability in order to be optimally nourished and consequently enjoy good health and personal wellness. NESTLE believe that good nutrition for children starts before and during pregnancy, then continues after birth with a well nourished mother, breastfeeding exclusively for six months and beyond, in line with World Health Organization recommendations, before making feeding choices appropriate to her weaned childs developmental stage. NESTLE support parents in making the right food choices for their children by providing research based nutrition products, including maternal and infant health supplements, and by offering appropriate, consistent advice to help them understand that even small changes to a childs diet can have a big impact on its health today and throughout its life.

We are glad that NESTLE is considering the health of the consumers in avoiding to become overweight or obese and developing related non- communicable diseases (such as cardiovascular disease) in several ways. They aim to help educate the people about their nutritional needs by improving the information about ingredients and portion size they provide on their products. NESTLE also support other initiatives and promote better hydration along with the benefits of physical activity. We welcome Nestls stated intention to improve their impacts on women in their supply chains. They are the first of the 3 big chocolate companies targeted by Behind the Brands to do this publicly. Given their immense influence on the lives of women farmers, it is a promising signal that the company has committed to considering ways to address gaps in their current policies and to producing a detailed plan in the next few weeks. We look forward to seeing whether the specific steps Nestle intends to take go far enough to ensure women in their supply chains have the rights and opportunities they deserve. Were glad that Nestle is taking challenges to its policies seriously but they have yet to answer whether they will pursue our specific ask that they address gender inequality in their cocoa supply chains. Nestls reaction highlights its support to small scale farmers, sustainable use of water and addressing child labor. But Nestle scores poorly on land and women and these are areas of real concern for a company that relies so heavily on land and on women farmers and workers. Nestle does not have any guidelines requiring suppliers to take a zero tolerance approach to land grabbing, nor does it know how many women are involved in their cocoa supply chain and whether these women are at risk of exclusion of exploitation. Words are important, but only if they are backed up by action.
