Student-Friendly Standards H2.3.1I can discuss how conflicts can be resolved (fixed) through compromise (working together)

(TE p. 249) What is an ambassador? (TE p. 249) What is a treaty?

(TE p.250) In what way did Nelson Mandela and others make a difference in South Africa? (Review question #3 p. 251) Why do countries work together? (Review question #4 p. 251) What rights di Nelson Mandela and other work to gain?

5. CLOSURE: Discuss the three statements in the Review and Assess section of TE p. 251. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Write a Speech (TE p. 251): If you were a U.S. ambassador, what would you tell people about your country? Explain the role of ambassadors and how the United Nations helps nations work together. Write a speech about it. Revise your speech once. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must discuss how conflicts can be resolved through compromise. Writing about the role of ambassadors and how the United Nations helps nations work together, will show if students understand how countries can resolve their conflicts through compromise. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the Reading Skill sheet of keeping track of the problem and solution as the students read will be the easiest. Students are familiar with this strategy from their guided reading work. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I feel the most challenging part of this lesson might be helping the students understand the concept of inequality and that some parts of the world as well as in the history of the United States, certain people had their rights taken away. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension of this lesson, I would us Extend Lesson 4 (p. 252-253) about Nelson Mandela. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For the students who are having trouble understanding the concepts in this lesson, I would use the Reteach Minilesson described on the bottom of TE p. 251. The

students and I would work together to fill in the frame game graphic organizer to reteach key details from the text and the lesson. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? This lesson seems complete and concise. It gives an overview of the role of ambassadors and the role of the United Nations. It provides a springboard for those students who might to explore these topics further. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of any lesson for me is deciding what to use as an assessment. I feel worksheets and formal tests are used too much and dont really call for creative, critical thinking. I chose one of the Drama/Writing activities in the TE for my assessment as I felt it provided for more critical thinking and application.
