Taiwan-based TFT LCD panel makers' small- to medium-size panel shipments are expected to reach 384 million units in the second quarter of 2013, up 9.9% on quarter and up 10.6% on year, largely due to demand for the May 1 holiday period in China, Digitimes Research estimates.

Market observers expect domestic demand for smartphones in China to reach around 300 million units in 2013.

41.5 Panels Korea- and China-based panel makers have plans to produce 41.5-inch panels in 2013 in order to compete against the 42-inch TV panel market, according to industry sources. The sources said the size is expected to be about US$10 cheaper than 42-inch panels, giving TV vendors increased opportunities to reduce costs and lower pricing in the market as a result.

Tablet panel orders Taiwan-based TFT-LCD panel makers have received surging orders from international tablet vendors and Chinabased white-box ones, according to Taiwan-based supply chain sources, adding that Apple and Samsung Electronics together will ship 110 million tablets in 2013.

LED TV LED TVs will account for 100% of Samsung and 90% of LG's TV products in 2013. Direct-lit LED TVs have lower production costs compared to side-lit LED TVs, which is beneficial in increasing LED TV penetration rate. Samsung's 40-inch thin-type direct-lit LED TV backlight modules cost 25% lower than side-lit modules, said Digitimes Research. As for LG, the costs of its 50-inch direct-lit LED TV panels are 8.4% lower than the cost of side-lit panels. In 2013, Samsung plans to introduce thick (93mm) and thin (49.5mm) TV models while LG plans to introduce direct-lit Led TVs with an average thickness of 78mm.

Taiwan based Large size panel shipments Taiwan-based panel makers' large-size (9-inch and above) TFT LCD panel shipments are expected to reach 60.87 million units in the second quarter of 2013, up 5.2% on quarter but down 10.3% on year, according to Digitimes Research. The makers' LCD TV panel shipments are expected to rise 6.7% in the second quarter, slightly lower than the 7.8% global average, largely due to decreases in shipments to the 32-inch segment.

Orders from China Taiwan-based panel makers are continuing to see increased orders from China-based handset vendors for handset panels, and expect orders to remain steady until the third quarter of 2013, according to industry sources. The sources said AU Optronics (AUO) and Innolux Corporation are seeing strong orders from Huawei Technologies and Lenovo for smartphone panels, as smartphone growth is anticipated in the China market during 2013, the sources said.

Ultra HD Panels As Innolux, AU Optronics (AUO) and China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) have been increasing production of Ultra HD TV panels, estimated global shipments in 2013 have been upward adjusted from 2.32.6 million units originally to 3.5-4 million units, according to industry sources. The sources also said more panel makers in China are likely to start } 23

producing Ultra HD TV panels in the second half of 2013.

Increasing tarrifs on TV panels The China government may increase tariffs on TV panels sized 32-inch and above from 5% to 8% by the end of July 2013 in an effort to further promote local panel makers, according to market observers. The observers said the government hopes that China's panel industry will be able to further support local-based TV vendors in addition to local-based handset and tablet vendors, which would help increase the percentage of panels provided by local panel makers to the local vendors to 50%. China-based panel makers such as BOE and China Star Optoelectronics (CSOT) are continuing to increase their production capacity, which coupled with the increase in tariffs, could affect the amount of panels the China-based vendors use from Taiwan- and Koreabased panel makers, the observers added. However, the observers also believe the Taiwan- and Korea-based panel makers currently have technology advantages in producing Ultra HD and OLED TV panels, which should help the makers stay competitive.

OLED TV Panel Material developments OLED TV development may increase in the future despite recent setbacks in mass producing OLED TV panel technology. Industry sources claim that more material makers are increasingly investing in research and development of OLED materials as more panel makers are showing signs of developing the technology. The material makers' investments include more research and development into backplanes, excimer laser annealing (ELA), material lifespan, luminous efficiency and packaging related to OLED. All of these currently have issues that are contributing to low yields and high costs for OLED TV panels for makers such as LG Display, said the sources. Despite the present high costs, panel makers still think OLED will be popular in the market and are bumping up facilities and investments for developing the technology. This is causing material makers such as Merck to re-think their strategies and further invest into developing OLED, the sources added.

AMOLED Displays Amoled display shipments for mobile handset applications are expected to grow to 447.7 million units in 2017, up from 195.1 million units in 2013, according to research firm IHS iSuppli.

OLED TV Panels Market estimates believe that less than 10,000 OLED TV panels will be produced in 2013 and will only increase to about 1.7 million units by 2015.

Panel Demand in China Demand for TV panels has been rising due to China's Labor Day holidays and LG Display (LGD) reported March shipments of 32-inch TV panels exceeding two million units. BOE saw monthly shipments of the product exceed one million units in the first quarter, but the figure is relatively low compared to the fourth quarter of 2012. The firm has been shifting capacity to produce 46-inch TV panels. China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT) saw monthly shipments of 32inch TV panels fall to 1.4 million units in the first quarter. CSOT has been shifting production focus to 28-, 46-, and 48-inch TV panels. Currently, 32-, 40-, and 42-inch TVs are still the mainstream. For 32-inch TV panels, global monthly shipments have been around eight million units, accounting for approximately 40% of the market. Meanwhile, Taiwan-based panel makers such as Innolux and AU Optronics (AUO) have shifted focus on producing 39-inch TV panels. In the first quarter of 2013, Innolux saw shipments of 32-inch TV panels fall 200,000-250,000 units while AUO saw monthly shipments fall to 700,000800,000 units from one million units in 2012. According to panel makers in China, quotes of 32-inch open cell TV panels are currently around US$99-100/unit. As Taiwan-based panel makers have shifted focus to other TV panel sizes, with fewer players, firms have been able to make profits in the market, said China-based panel makers.

Quotes for 50- and 55-inch Full HD 100/120Hz edge-LED and 39-, 40-, 42inch Full HD 50/60Hz edge-LED TV panels have dropped by only US$1-2, the sources indicated.

9.7 panel shipments Shipments of 9.7-inch panels rose to three million units in February, compared to 1.1 million units in January. Apple had slashed orders in January for the 9.7-inch after ordering approximately 6.1 million units a month earlier in December 2012, ostensibly to fulfill annual contract purchase agreements with suppliers Samsung Display and LG Display. Apple resumed ordering in February of the following year on a larger basis as it prepares to transition to its next generation iPad later in 2013, said IHS.

6 Ultra HD Panels Japan-based makers, mainly Sharp and Panasonic, have been developing 6inch ultra-thin high-end panels for use in large-screen smartphones expected to be launched at the end of thirdquarter 2013, according to Taiwanbased component makers.

Rising Tensions between North and South Korea The panel industry has yet to be affected by rising tensions between North and South Korea, according to Amtran chairman Alpha Wu.

Panel Prices Quotes for LCD TV panels for the first half of April have remained mostly stable, as demand is expected to increase ahead of the shopping season in the China market in early May, according to sources with the Taiwanbased supply chain.
