BLACK UMFOLOSI

TO SHARE STAGE WITH CHASE SKHUZA & IYASA

Imbube is a traditional style of singing. It is also called "isichathamiya". The music was born in the mines of South Africa, started by black workers who used to hold social competitions during weekends. The music competitions became a highlight of everyone's social calendar. Winners of these social competitions got the adoration of their fans. Imbube has been made popular in the west by Ladysmith Black Mambazo of South Africa, but it would be so wrong to talk of this genre of music without talking about Zimbabwes Black Umfolosi.

specialising in harmonic acapella

Black Umfolosi was formed in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, who named themselves after the Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa which is where their ancestors can be traced. The group is now an internationally acclaimed multi-discipline performing arts group specialising in harmonic acapella and traditional African dance.

Black Umfolosi tours extensively to the UK, Australia, Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA. Black Umfolosi repertoire needs no listings as they have been seen in every corner of the world. Their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during their brilliantly choreographed shows with a full range of movements from subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping.

ALEXIO KAWARA TO SHAINA AT INTWASA

Alexio Kawara was born in Glen Norah, the southern part of the capital city of Zimbabwe, Harare. He is the 4th born in a family of ve. Alexio started his music career in the year 1999.
After struggling to get a recording deal as a solo artist, Alexio later got a 3 year contract with Shamiso entertainment in 2001, the same year that he released his debut album, Usazondisiya. This had a number of hits which meant a good start for Alexio Kawara. RwiyoRwangu (2003), which in English means my song, was Alexios second release. Chibvugubvugu, an afro-hip-hop track on the album was an explosive hit on the local radio stations to the extent that it was number one on two of the stations on the Top100 chart show for that year.

Aleaxio Ka wa Dudu Man ra will be sharing th he es the The Sp nga and Cool Croon tage with ring Jazz N ers as par t of ight at Int koBulawa w yo. asa Arts F estival

In 2005, Alexio released his 3rd album entitled P mbiYangu (My Secret Place). For this album, he got four awards: two National Arts Merit Awards (N.A.M.A) and two Zimbabwe Music Awards (Z.I.M.A) for best album and song of the year, Tinodanana. 2008 was not a good year for Zimbabwes economy, which maybe explains why Alexios Shaina was a major hit throughout the whole country and in some parts of the neighbouring countries. Shaina is a song on Alexios 4th album, Kana. It talks about each day bringing new hope to the people, which it did and still does to this present moment. Alexio got a Z.I.M.A award for song of the year for Shaina. Having performed a number of times at the Harare International Festival of Arts in 2000, 2008 and 2009, Alexio had his rst out-of-Zimbabwe performance at the Blantyre Arts Festival in Malawi in October 2010. For Alexio it was a learning experience. In September 2011, Alexio performed alongside the South African based Ringo Madlingozi at the Arts Alive Festival held in Johannesburg and also performed alongside Eric Wainana at the Mannenburg in Harare the same month. He then performed at the Harare International Festival of Arts 2012 (H.I.F.A) a part of Zimbabwe/Netherlands collaboration with the Handsome Poets, a rock band from Netherlands.

From being classi ed as an urban groover (a term used to describe music for the urban youths in Zimbabwe),Alexios music matured toa fusion of modern and Zimbabwean traditional music. The lyrics now carry a deeper meaning of lifes ups and downs as has been his life in music. This is depicted in his latest o ering entitled Tose. This is a 13 track album encouraging love and unity amongst people of di erent backgrounds. This album comes at a time where Zimbabweans in particular are in need of unity to restore their dignity and identity.

THE IMMIGRANTS
Fresh, seductive, poignant, and thought-provoking is the only way to describe Raisedon Baya and Thabani Hilary Moyos collaborative re-imagination of Aurther Millers A View To ABridge.

THE SHOW
Watch the production on 22 September 2012 from 7:30pm -8:30pm at Bulawayo Theatre

The Immigrants is a play about Zimbabwean immigrants living in the hub of South Africa, Johannesburg. The world premiere of the play is on the 22nd of September 2012 during the festival. The play is a mixture of talent, experience, beauty, passion, and experimentation. The central character, Eddie played by Memory Kumbota, is a man confused by moral law and the ambiguity of his own sexual feelings. Eddie is confronted by, as in classical tragedy, with a situation which he is totally unprepared for. At the center of the con ict is Cathy played by Alison Unami Khuphe, Eddies niece, who is nearing womanhood and about to start a career. Cathy is beautiful and Eddie is very much aware of it. It is Eddies unconscious love for his niece and uncontrollable jealousy that eventually destroys his family. Eddie practices communal law by accommodating two fellow Zimbabwean illegal immigrants at his apartment in Hilbrow. One of the immigrants, Qhubani played by Kevin Bhuru, is an ordinary hardworking man planning to return to his family in Zimbabwe. However, his brother, Sifundo, played by Zenzo Nyathi, is young and has other plans, particularly of becominga permanent South African resident. Sifundo is handsome, sings tenor, spends his money on fashion and looks, makes dresses for Cathy and seems not to possess the masculinity acceptable to Eddie. Sifundo and Cathy fall in love and intend an early marriage. It is at this point that Eddies repressed sexuality for Cathy blows to the top. At the same time his nervous sexual feelings for Sifundo takes the form of bullying and teasing him about his home country Zimbabwe. Caught up by lack of self-understanding Eddie becomes xenophobic. He seems not able to resist his attraction to Cathy and acknowledge his marriage to Buhle (played by Brenda Jeranje). However what is at stake is not the psychology of sexual turmoil but Eddies inability to live up to the obligation of comradeship. The playwrights presentation of Eddies adulterous, semi-incestuous drive and inarticulate life is brilliantly written as his bewilderment increases. The Immigrants is a must see play.

THE FATHER

So who is the father of the child? Can any man declare with absolute certainty that he is the father of his children? Or has the woman got the last say?
A frightening debate from the father of modern theatre, August Strindberg on the issue many couples would rather not discuss for fear of confronting hitherto hidden dark family secrets in the war of the sexes. The issues covered in the play deal with the centrality of a womans position in a world dominated by men. This production is a continuation of the Zimbabwe Sweden Theatre workshops started in May 2011. This full Zimbabwean version of The Father is part of the world celebrations of August Strindberg centenary. The issues covered are real and relevant to any man or family in any culture and any part of the world. Peter Churu directs this Complete Arts Project that features the talents of Tinashe Chirisa, Nothando Nobengula, Tafadzwa Bob Mutumbi, Charmaine Picardo, Samantha Ndlovu, Gideon Joseph Wabvuta and Eddington Hatitongwe.

RECIPROCAL NARRATIVES
The festivals 2012 visual arts exhibition is being held under the theme reciprocal narratives

THE VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION

he exhibition attempts to look at the reciprocal narratives (mutual histories) of peoples and places in times, particularly Bulawayo, Harare and Johannesburg, through photography, video, installation and sound. The exhibition is opening . on the 20th of September at the National Gallery in Bulawayo and running for a month

The exhibition features Nancy Mteki an award winning photographer based in Harare who was recently in the Dakar Art Biennale, Thabiso Sekgala a South African photographer bringing in the South African history through photography. The local contingent of artists and photographers include Owen Maseko, Danisile Ncube, Dumisani Ndlovu, Resta Nyamwanza and others all exploring places and peoples and how they relate to each other. The focus of the exhibition is the cities of Bulawayo, Harare and Johannesburg.

all exploring places and peoples

Places usually have their own histories and trajectories. These can be towns, cities, homes, but whatever they are they are places with people and narratives. The theme revokes consciousness concerning our position as inhabitants of a place and being inhabitants this state of space occupation makes us confront our narratives and identity and the events that have led us to be where we are. These spaces or places shape our identities. Spaces in di erent places, as much as they are di erent, we learn can share mutual paths in their historical, political and social developments at one time or another. For example Zimbabwe and South Africa or the cities of Bulawayo, Harare and Johannesburg. The similarities and di erences can be seen in the growth and social dynamics of these places from pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial times.

distant relation and engagement of these

The mutual and distant relation and engagement of these places with each other was more or less guaranteed in the socio-political sphere through migrations of King Mzilikazi into the current day Zimbabwean plateau- and the more current economic and politically induced migrations during the Mugabe era that saw a sizeable number of Zimbabweans moving to South Africa, the adventures of the imperialist Cecil Rhodes, relations between ANC and Zanu and Zapu in the colonial era, these where all elements that set foundations to a shared narrative between the 2 countries and inevitably the 3 places and peoples in time.

At 40 most men would try leaving their wives starting again somewhere, others would be leaving jobs to try new things. But not with Majahawoda JeysMarabini Ndlovu. At forty he has nothing but praises and love for his wife and partner, Fatima, going to the extent of composing and dedicating a couple of songs from his latest album to her. At forty Jeys Marabini has no intention of changing his career. His is a musician and his calling is music. At forty Jeys Marabini has but seen it all; he has travelled to Europe and back, won several national awards for his work and shared the stage with some of the best in the business. Aptly described as one of Zimbabwes biggest discovery in the Afrocentric /world music genre. musical bu et served with style and a maturity that only comes with years of experience. It is a musical dish that many of us will savour for many years to come. One thing for sure is that at forty Jeys Marabini has matured and is now willing to embrace a variety of cultures. His latest album sees the gifted musician singing in four di erent languages- English, Ndebele, Shona, and Swahili - evidence that he has embraced the idea of cultural diversity and is now willing to dialogue with other cultures musically. Obviously there is a desire in this new album to open up to anyone who can connect with his music. The album is an open invitation to a wide range of cultures to embrace the music of JeysMarabini. Jeys@40is a work of art celebrating Jeys musical prowess and achievement.

Dont wipe away the tears - wipe away the causes of the tears.
