Those who have been to a Shabbat service lately have probably noticed that thinner Mishkan TFilah prayer books have joined our original larger version. The newer one is only for Shabbat, is lighter weight and easier to use. A small number was initially ordered but more are needed. You have the opportunity to give the Temple one or more prayer books to commemorate a happy occasion or in remembrance of a loved one who has passed away. A book plate will be placed in the front cover of the siddur with your name and the occasion or person to be commemorated. At Temple I often look at the inside cover of the Plaut to see if it was dedicated to someone. Every once in a while I will come across one given to the Temple in commemoration of my daughter Ariels Bat Mitzvah by her grandparents. It brings back warm memories. My brother Bernard, Alav HaShalom, was a dedicated and proud Jew. He was an avid reader, and loved learning. This will be a wonderful tribute to him. Think of people you would like to honor or a happy occasion you would like to commemorate. Please consider this very meaningful gift to the Temple. The donation for the gift to the Temple and the dedication is $36. Please contact the Temple office. -Abe Barnett, Vice President
On Thursday, March 14th, eight members of Sisterhood (see photo) stepped back in time when we toured 97 Orchard Street, The Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. The tour was arranged by Sisterhood member, Dr. Gail Levine-Fried. Our group was part of the Thursday night Public Tour which focuses on the architectural, historical and social aspects of all four floors of the building. Visitors from France and Toronto were there having heard about the Lower East Sides history as a melting pot for immigrants from many nations arriving in the U.S.
Anticipating major calorie expenditure from the extreme stair-climbing ascent to follow, we nourished ourselves at Caf Katje, a charming, new restaurant a few doors down from the Museum, where we savored Austrian cuisine. Our tour guide, Michele, brought to life the stories of the families who lived at 97 Orchard Street over the decades and gave us a wealth of information about the buildings design and upgrades. Hy Brett, who grew up on the Lower East Side, shared personal accounts of his childhood experiences. All of us came away with renewed respect and appreciation for the resilience of our immigrant forebears and of all the immigrants who made their homes and started new lives on the Lower East Side. Sisterhood looks forward to having additional outings related to our Jewish social/cultural history. Stay tuned in. Dr. Gail Levine-Fried, Sisterhood 3
Sisterhood
Its May, time for the spring we have all been yearning for, and time to look back on the great programs Sisterhood had to warm up our long, cold winter. We had an exciting guest speaker, stimulating book discussions, a Creative Action Workshop where we got to know ourselves and one another better, and an inspiring visit to the Tenement

Preschool
Spring is in the air and the preschool is abuzz. All of our classes are busy talking about the spring, exploring the area around the school and enjoying the friendships that they have forged over the long winter months. The Chickadees, Montana Vasquez-Grinnell's two class, have enjoyed learning about the seasons, and now that we're entering spring they have been talking a lot about what is happening around us! The children are discussing the trees, the flowers, and the fact that they get to be outside more. They have a lot of books out about spring coming, and they are going to do projects to celebrate the cherry blossoms, and create a budding tree for their bulletin board. The Chickadees recently watercolor painted the number 3, since so many children have/or will turn 3 this year in school. They have a lot of counting books out as well, and will do some cooking projects along with art projects to practice their counting skills!

They discussed how mail is transported Sessions start at by vehicle and that mail carriers bring A one hour session will be held on 5:30 P.M and end at our letters safely to the right person. Religious School
Keeping with our practice of highlighting ways in which individual remarkable Jewish Americans have left their mark on the world, we have focused our daily themes in the following ways over the past few weeks: March 3 In honor of the 101st birthday of Hadassah, The Womens Zionist Organization of America, we celebrated the life and accomplishments of Baltimore native, Henrietta Szold. March 10 -- Paying homage to Brooklyns Neil Sedaka, after introducing the students to his iconic music in recognition of his 74th birthday , we honored his ethnic background by focusing our lessons on Sephardic tradition and history. March 17 During our last session before Passover, we saluted the liberating force that was Golda Meir (immigrated to Pre-State Israel from Milwaukee in 1921) on the 44th anniversary of her becoming Prime Minister of Israel.. Then we retreated 3200 years to get a taste of what our ancestors experienced on their road to liberation by baking matzah with the traditional time limit of 18 minutes.

form of transportation in their own writing. They are continuing to practice their letters and handwriting. Their growth and enthusiasm around this activity clearly exemplifies how much progress has been made from the beginning of the year! The Puffins also made traffic lights- and talked about what each color means. Another exciting project last week was painting with the wheels of their toy cars, which was very exciting and enjoyed by all. The class is planning to make life size vehicle that the kids can fit in from donated pieces of cardboard and cardboard boxes. The Hummingbirds, Pam Apple's four class, are working on a firefighter unit. Two big upcoming events are a trip to the local fire house and a visit by a firefighter. The firefighter is the husband of Caitlin Mullin, Pam's assistant teacher. Firefighter Chris, will be visiting the Hummingbird and Puffin classrooms complete with his bunker gear, to talk to the children about fire safety. The Hummingbirds have been discussing Stop, Drop, and Roll and the importance of never touching a fire. They will be conducting a science experiment involving a glass bottle placed over a flame, demonstrating how a fire can be extinguished when there is no oxygen (air) to feed it. They will use the demonstration to illustrate that if you come in contact with fire by dropping to the floor, you take the air out of the fire. The Hummingbirds have also been singing "I am a firefighter" and reading books Daisy the Fire Dog, Firefighter, and Firefighting Machines. The children will also be creating their own classroom fire truck that they will be painting and decorating. -Susan Sporer, Director
April 7-- For Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), we learned about the inspirational Holocaust memorial imagined and accomplished by the 8th Grade classes of Whitwell, Tennessee. If you havent seen the story in film, Paper Clips, can be found free of charge at Hulu.com (http://www.hulu.com/#! watch/422211). We then looked at a variety of 9/11 memorials and talked about ways remembering can help make a better world. April 14 For Yom HaAtzmaut (Israeli Independence Day), we learned about the people and culture of Israel, and also the concept and success of Political Zionism. We celebrated by singing Yom Holedet Sameach (Happy Birthday to You) and the blowing out the candles that spelled out 65 before eating the yummy cake. Whats Left Its a bit mind-boggling that we have just a few weeks left. During this time we have a major culminating project before us. Having collected tzedaka on a weekly basis, the students will be deciding where to allocate their funds. I look forward to reporting back to this congregation about the decisions they will make. What a wonderful way to cap a fantastic year! LShalom, -Dr. Andy Dubin, Religious School Principal and Rabbinic Intern
