2. The class will all sit on the reading circle and the teacher will read the book: Something Good to them asking questions as they read. 3. Students should be following along while listening and thinking about choices that they make when it comes to wants and needs. 4. Next we will discuss as a class some of the wants and needs choices that they and their parents make on a daily basis. Each table group will then come up with three such choices and write them down in their Social Studies journals. 5. While this is finishing up I will put on a short musical video that illustrates some of the more popular wants a child has. 6. Lastly I will draw a wants and a needs column on the chalkboard and using their journals and ideas from the video we will list all of the ideas that they have come up with. I will then use the side by side ideas and ask them to choose between things they listed as wants and needs so that they can see how difficult those choices can be. 7. Ask questions as an ongoing check for understanding Focus on these questions: What is a want? What is a need? What is an all or nothing choice? What are some choices we make every day that affect our wants and needs.

6. Closure: Discuss key concepts of what a want and need are and how they affect the choices we have to make.

G. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Write a journal entry identifying all or nothing choices they or their parents have to make. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If students are able to distinguish between a want like a toy and a need like food and make the appropriate choice I will see that they understand. H. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be teaching them the difference between a want and a need. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach?

I think the most difficult will be explaining why they have to choose and cant just have all the things they want and need. . 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I could have students take their journals home and talk to their parents about wants and needs that they face and have them bring in a couple examples. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? I would have these students work with a peer tutor and if they were still struggling I would work with them one on one to try an explain it in a way that better helps them understand.

5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? At this point I am pretty happy with the lesson and would have to use trial and error to see if anything needed to be changed. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? It wasa little difficult to try and teach at a first grade level and try to find appropriate materials and resources. I had to go back and look at some of the stuff my son did in the first grade for ideas.
