A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This is a 3rd grade Geography lesson plan that focuses on the states. It is designed to expose the students to every state in the union, while giving them a reference that they may use in the future. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: At grade level Grouping: Individual C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook entitled Communities Computers with internet access (for students) Colored pencils

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.3.1 Identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map. G6.3.6 Locate and name the states surrounding Nevada.

Student-Friendly Standards The students will be able to identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map. I can locate and name the states surround Nevada.

E. Procedure: 1. Return the United States maps that the students worked on the previous day. 2. Show the students any changes they may have needed. Put out art supplies. Show the students ways to research the United States by projecting Google search results, and interactive maps, onto the whiteboard. 3. At this point, students will begin a basic research assignment during which time they will use the computers as well as the information they can find in the textbooks to fill out the rest of the map including the names of each state and its capital. 4. When the students are done, ask the students to count how many states they found (should be fifty). If anybody had problems, now is the time to have them ask them.

5. CLOSURE: Project a completed map of the United States and their capitals using a computer and projector. The students can check their work at this time. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure student understanding by gauging the completion of their maps. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If the students have accurately completed the worksheet, they will know which states surround Nevada, as well as the rest of the United States. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? Teaching the students how to research the states will be the easiest. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging to teach will probably be any confusion that takes place from the northeast corner of the United States. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will not follow up this lesson. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Theres not really a way for students to not grasp the concept. What I am teaching is not so much a concept as it is simple facts. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I have a difficult time coming up with ideas for the younger students, so I might need to gear this lesson in a more child-friendly manner. I could see the lesson plan working, but how long it takes will depend on the students. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? Trying to describe every step.
