Mattern, Krista et al. The Relationship between AP Exam Performance and College Outcomes. College Board (Aug 2011): 1-17. ERIC. Web. Mar 10th 2013 In this educational report, studies were conducted to figure out the relationship between Advance Placement Program (AP) and a students success in college for four different courses. The students were divided into three groups (no AP exam, score of 1 or 2, and a score of 3 or 4) per each subject. The students freshman year GPA in college was also included into the equation. The results showed that students with an AP score of a 3 or 4 performed better in college than students with an AP score of a 1 or no AP exam. The reasons argued behind the results state that the high demand in independence in AP course better prepares the students for college. This report goes against my belief in the importance for AP courses, which is why it will aid in my paper. Another viewpoint is needed in any well-rounded argument to keep bias opinions away. Since the arguments made in the report show not only; the opposite viewpoint but other alternatives, I can use it discuss the other standpoints of my topic. Speyer, Mark. Our Numbers Are up! (Is That Good?) Journal of College Admissions (Feb 2008): 8-15. ERIC. Web. Mar 12th 2013 This academic journal focuses on the higher scores of SATs in America. The academic journal does praise the students for their victory but also puts down the college admissions process. The journal states that the admissions office grants applicants with sky high scores into their colleges and ignores students with lower scores. In the journal he goes on to acknowledge the fact that America

needs to clearly define college readiness and pre -college learning. I can use this journal to elaborate on the theory that colleges should be more consider about a students whole high school career and not just one test. Speyer gives great examples of how to fix the SAT score problem. He states that colleges should combine the high school GPA and the SAT scores to get a more accurate understanding of the students educational background or to just drop the SAT. Either way, this journal with help my argument while providing solutions to the many flawed theories. Shaw, Emily et al. An Alternative Presentation of Incremental Validity: Discrepant SAT and High school GPA Performance. Educational and Psychological Measurement (Jul 2011): 1-25. ERIC. Web. Mar 9th 2013 This academic journal illustrates the differences in ones SAT and GPA in high school. The combination of the two scores are often used to determine whether a student will prosper in a college setting. Thus, determining which college, if any, they will get accepted into. The journal also analyzed the effect of extracurricular activities and a students GPA and SAT score. Lastly, the journal stated the error behind using a SAT score only or a GPA alone. Using only a high school GPA for admission over anticipated college performance for those students who had a higher high school GPA compared to SAT scores. SAT scores had under predicted college performance for students with higher SAT scores compared to high school GPA. This academic journal exhibits the main errors behind using either system of determining college readiness and intelligence. As I do agree with the authors statements and argument (SAT and high school GPA combined gives the most accurate results of readiness), I believe that this journal will help support my argument. I will be able to clearly state the reasons why either method should be used or should not be used. The amount of research obtained in this journal allows me to pull in the statistics behind each method.

Tuck, Eve. Urban youth and school push out: gateways, get-aways, and the GED. New York: Routledge, 2012. Web. March 14 2013 This book brings the fact that under privileged students do not get a fair chance into a college due to standardized tested to a surface. Tuck explains how the GED credentials set in nearly every high school pushes out the urban youth of their system because they are considered under-performing due to their lack of education. The GED system and standardized tests were made with the idea that all students equally have the same amount of educational privileges, when in reality this statement is not true. Tuck explains that students in low income areas will most likely not be able to even skim the standards set. This book will help me get a students point of view. Tuck conducted research on urban students to understand how they lack the materials needed to even get their diploma or GED and yet alone perform well on any standardized test. With many people arguing that SATs, ACTs, and AP test are made to help students with low GPAs get into colleges, none of them really ask what certain students think about all off the testing. Lutz, Cheryl L. A study of the effect of interactive whiteboards on student achievement and teacher instructional methods. Dissertation Abstracts International. 72-03 2010 Web. March 14 2013 This research on students from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte provides statistics showing that standardized tests are not necessarily a bad thing for students as long as the teachers provide the right mixture of technology and hands-on experimentation. The studied show that when a teacher used an interactive white-board (IWB) to aid in their teaching, students performed better on standardized test then those teachers who used traditional methods. This study can help me in my paper by adding a solution to the argument of standardize test purely harming students possibilities of success. Many may argue that standardized test hinder students due to the complexity and the amount of independence needed to prepare for the test, this study presents the solution in the teachers. If teachers mixed technology, an everyday piece of a students life, with learning the outcome of test results will be higher. If you can relate the material with something that is very common, one will be able to understand concepts more no matter what financial or ethical standing they are in.
