A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This economics lesson plan is designed for fourth graders will put all that they learned to use. Students will finally be able to create their own mini businesses. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th Skill Level: all skill levels Grouping: whole group, small group and, individuals

C. Materials: Pen Paper Computers (Microsoft word)

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o E.10.4.3 Discuss reasons people use banks.

Student-Friendly Standards E.10.4.3 I will know reasons people use banks.

1. Procedure: Have students write in their journal what their ideal business would be. Discuss as a class 2. Watch brief video on business: http://teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?title=Different_Forms_of__Business_Ownership &video_id=61088 3. Review what business is from previous day. 4. Ask students to list the things they think starting a business requires. Write each student response on the blackboard. 5. Start building their business: Explain to students that people need (money) to start a business. Also make it clear that specific laws that regulate businesses. Each group has been loaned $55,000 from the bank. Explain that starting a business requires research on a variety of issues, including how much it will cost to start the business, where to locate the business, and the cost of advertising in newspapers, magazines, etc. Explain that businesses need publicity materials, such as banners to introduce the business to the community;

signs; and business cards. Will you have volunteers to help (free) or will you hire more people to spread the word about your business (pay)? Explain that most businesses in America are small businesses. Make sure that students understand that many small businesses fail but the ones that succeed do so because their owners take the time to carefully plan the business. Activities: Organize students into cooperative groups. They will work in groups to decide on the type of business they will create. There should be four students in each group: Each student will assume a different role within the group: group recorder, discussion leader, group reporter, or group taskmaster. The recorder will record the comments of the group members on paper or on a laptop and then transfer the notes to the computer. The discussion leader will keep the discussion flowing. The taskmaster will make sure that the group remains focused on the creation of the business plan, business cards, banners, etc., using Microsoft Publisher. The reporter will report to the entire class about the products and findings of their group. To make the group presentation, Members of the group will co-construct slides using PowerPoint and other media using print material and resources gathered from the World Wide Web. They will also explore the Internet to look at business sites. Students may use those sites as models for their own businesses.

6. Students present their mini business to the class, class can ask questions (minimum of 3 questions must be asked.) students will also grade group members on participation and contribution to the project. 7. CLOSURE: students must answer following questions: what did they learn from this unit on economics? How hard was it to create a mini business? How hard do you think it is to create a real business? What aspect of economics is still unclear? What part did you favor the most? E. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Their projects, peer evaluations, and out question will serve as an assessment. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. How well they did on completing their mini-business and telling me what part the bank played in the whole project.

F. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think this lesson is pretty straight forward, the whole thing will be easy.

2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? None. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? Having students try to contact business owners and having them share their story. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? Ask them what they do not understand, reteach it. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? Nothing. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? Finding an appropriate standard.
