INTRODUCTION
The purpose of the Chart Correction Log is to provide the mariner with an easy to use administrative facility for maintaining a documentary record of chart corrections to a chart outfit. It also provides an authoritative document which helps to assist maritime authorities in the auditing of the mariner's chart outfit. It is vital that an up-to-date record of all corrections affecting all charts is held. This links with ISM (International Ship Management) Codes and SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) legislation and forms the basis of good and safe practices followed by the majority of seafarers. NP133A lists charts numerically and is used to record corrections (by their Admiralty Notices to Mariners number) against any chart affected.

GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF CHART CORRECTION LOG Part 1 is divided into two sections: Section 1 is used to record: receipt of chart outfit/folio Admiralty Weekly Notices to Mariners received and acted on. Section 2 is used to record which New Charts and New Editions are published. Part 2 is divided into three sections: Section 1 is used to record Admiralty Notices to Mariners affecting Admiralty Navigational Charts in the 1 to 5000 Series. Section 2 is used to record Admiralty Notices to Mariners affecting Australian and New Zealand Charts reproduced by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. Section 3 is used to record Admiralty Notices to Mariners affecting Admiralty Miscellaneous Charts. USE OF CHART CORRECTION LOG This document does not attempt to teach you how to correct your charts. It is assumed that you are able to plot from the text of an Admiralty Notice to Mariners and that you know how to position correctly. The essential points of good chart correcting practices are covered in NP294 'How to Correct Your Charts the Admiralty Way'. a) On receipt of the ship's chart outfit/folio i) In Part 1, Section 1 an entry should be made as to when the chart outfit/folio was supplied and corrected to the relevant Admiralty weekly Notices to Mariners'. ii) In Part 2 insert in the Notices to Mariners column the number of the latest Notices to Mariners including year (eg 99/378) for which the chart outfit/folio has been corrected before supply and then close the space by drawing a vertical double line. If necessary, insert the number of the folio in the folio number column in ink.

iii)

b)

On receipt of a weekly edition of Admiralty Notices to Mariners In Part 1, Section 1 record in the table (in ink) copies of the weekly Admiralty Notices to Mariners received and checked on. In Part 2 of the log the following should be recorded: i) ii) From the numerical index of charts affected at the front of the weekly edition, insert (in ink) the numbers of the Notices affecting those charts held, Where entries continue from one year into the next, enter the New Year date in ink of a distinctive color after the previous year's last Notices to Mariners number, Enter Temporary and Preliminary Notices in pencil and rub out when cancelled, Enter any relevant information in the Navarea Warnings column.

iii) iv)

When you are satisfied that you have correctly followed the instructions of the Weekly Admiralty Notice to Mariner's correction (and only then) write the NM number in the bottom left hand corner of the chart as a record of the completed correction. It is risky to write the correction number on the chart before doing the correction. Now you can cross through the Notice to Mariner's number adjacent to the chart in the Log.
c) Publication of New Charts (NC) and New Edition of Charts (NE) In Part 1, Section 2 of this Log enter publication details of new charts, new editions (shown in Section II of the weekly Admiralty Notices to Mariners) applicable to the chart outfit held. On receipt of the charts complete the date of receipt column. In the space provided enter any Notices to Mariners affecting the chart prior to the date of its receipt. Upon receipt of the chart, transfer the relevant details to the chart's numerical position in the main part of the log. Clearly mark the chart as 'Cancelled (with NM number), use with Caution', and do not permanently correct cancelled charts. On receipt of a New Chart (NC) i) If necessary, insert the number of the folio in the folio number column in ink. ii) Insert in the Notices to Mariners column 'NC' and the date it was published and then close by a double line. On a receipt of a New Edition of a chart (NE) Insert in the Notices to Mariners column 'NE' and its date and close the space by a double line. As a result of the publication of a NC or NE, certain charts of the same geographical area may be cancelled and withdrawn. It is important that you destroy or permanently remove the cancelled copies as soon as you receive the new copy.

REFERENCES TO OTHER HYDROGRAPHIC PUBLICATIONS, CHARTS AND SERVICES How to Correct Your Charts the Admiralty Way (NP294): This purpose of this publication sets out simply and clearly the essential points of good chart correcting practices. Admiralty Weekly Notices to Mariners Admiralty Notices to Mariners are produced as weekly editions and contain information which enables mariners to keep their Admiralty Charts and Publications up to date for the latest reports received. Annual Summary of Admiralty Notices to Mariners This publication is published at the beginning of the year and has details of notices in force at that time of Annual Notices Nos. 1-24, Temporary and Preliminary Notices and Corrections to Sailing Directions. Cumulative List of Admiralty Notices to Mariners (NP234): This is published twice a year. The first is published in January and includes all Admiralty Notices to Mariners numbers published during the previous two years. The July edition includes all the Admiralty Notices to Mariners numbers published during the previous two and a half years. It also contains the latest edition dates for all charts in the British Admiralty series. It is a very useful tool for checking the accuracy of your record of corrections. It is the only source of information when you are setting up an Admiralty Notices to Mariners record system for the first time. Admiralty Notices to Mariners for Small Craft Editions (NP246A-D): The Small Craft Edition of Admiralty Notices to Mariners is published four times a year (February, May, July and September eg NP246/99A = February edition 1999). It is intended to meet the needs of those who navigate small craft in the waters of the British Isles and the European Coast from the Gironde to the Elbe and including the Kiel canal but who lack regular access to the Weekly Edition of Admiralty Notices to Mariners. Admiralty Digital Notices to Mariners: Admiralty Digital Notices to Mariners (ADNMs) are an electronic copy of the paper Admiralty weekly NM booklet and contain the same official data. The ADNM service offers a faster delivery of chart correcting data, and gives the user the ability to easily view or print the individual NMs and correcting tracings. This can result in the saving of up to 90% of time spent correcting charts as well as reducing the risk of plotting error. Available on subscription from selected Chart Agents, this service can be regionally tailored to suit chart and publication outfits large or small. The format of ADNMs means it can be sent on floppy disc or transmitted by satellite using High Speed Data Links. If you would like to receive a sample data set please contact your Chart Agent, or the ADNM help desk at the UKHO. Tel: +44 (0)1823 337900 Fax: +44 (0)1823 334917. Chart Correction Tracings Admiralty Chart correction tracings are produced weekly by the UKHO as an aid to chart correction. A full explanation of their use is described in Admiralty Publication 'How to Correct your Charts the Admiralty Way' (NP294). Correction Tracings can save correction effort and reduce the risk introducing plotting errors. The graphical representation of symbols and abbreviations also simplifies application of the corrections and generally avoids the need to cross reference to other Admiralty publications.

Admiralty Chart Correction Tracings are available through appointed Admiralty Chart Agents. For further details, contact the UK Hydrographic Office. Electronic Courier Services Notices to Mariners text and tracing corrections for paper charts can also be supplied electronically to vessels, whilst on passage, or to shore based Ship Management offices. The UKHO has licensed selected commercial companies to electronically distribute Admiralty Notices to Mariners on behalf of the Admiralty Chart Agents. These companies offer a range of chart management services including: Faster delivery of safety critical navigational information supplied electronically for chart correction whilst at sea. Automated Chart Correction Log. Chart inventory management including automatic chart ordering mechanism. Shore based chart management for Vessel Managers/Owners. Optional supplementary services such as Weather and GPS information.

These services assist users and vessel Owners with the chart management linked to ISM and ISO Regulations. The Mariner's Handbook (NP100): This book contains information of general interest to the mariner, and is complementary to the Sailing Directions. The contents include general remarks on charts and navigational publications, a glossary of terms used, and general information about navigational hazards, tides, currents, meteorology, ice, and other environmental conditions. Chart 5011: This is booklet entitled 'Symbols and Abbreviations used on Admiralty Charts' but it is still known and recognised by its old chart number. It explains every symbol used on Admiralty charts and should be used as a guide during the correcting process. Chart D6067: Use of Symbols and Abbreviations as recommended by the International Hydrographic Organisation.

Admiralty Charts and Publications are available from the world-wide network of Chart Agents which are listed in the 'Catalogue of Admiralty Charts and Publications' (NP131).
