KENT STATE UNIVERSITY APPROVES TUITION INCREASE

A new state budget cut requires Kent State University to approve a 3.5 percent tuition increase for upcoming fall 2013 semester.

KENT, Ohio Feb. 6, 2013 Kent State University officials have approved a 3.5 percent tuition increase for undergraduate and graduate students across its eight campuses. Due to a new state budget, Kent State is expected to receive $16 million less than the previous year from the state for the 2013-2014 school year. On Feb 2, the board of Trustees authorized the Board Chair, Chair of the Boards Finance and Administration Committee, and President to set tuition and related fees for fall semester 2013 within guidelines set forth in the final state budget bill. Kent State has imposed a hiring freeze and instituted energy saving programs that have reduced cost by $3 million since 2010. The tuition increase is mandatory in order to continue to provide high-quality academic programs to a growing number of students. Effective fall semester 2013, the tuition for students at the Kent Campus will increase $158 per semester (from $4,515 to $4,673) for undergraduate students and $168 per semester ($4,803 to $4,971) for graduate students. There is no increase in the surcharge for non-Ohio residents. The approved increase is expected to leave Kent States tuition ranked in the middle of Ohios public universities.

Students and their parents recognized the great educational experience and value that Kent State provides, said Kent State President Lester A. Lefton. We meet the expectations of our students by offering world-class programs taught by first-rate faculty in a diverse, inclusive and vibrant community. Kent State is dedicated to ensuring student success and continues to be one of Ohios most affordable public universities. Although state officials must deal with the challenges within the economic climate for Ohio, Jacqueline F. Woods, chair of Kent State Board of Trustees, expressed appreciation for their support of higher education. We appreciate that Governor Kasich, the General Assembly and Chancellor Petro continue to value higher education and wish to place Ohio among the best higher education systems in the country, Woods said. Kent State is working diligently to deliver high value to our students. For more information about Kent State University visit, www.kent.edu.
