The Common Packet Channel (CPCH) 3G's GPRS

DESCRIPTION
Golden Bridge Technology (GBT) invented the Common Packet Channel (CPCH) technology and holds a number of CPCH patents and patent applications worldwide. GBT's CPCH technology is designed for transfer of medium-size packet data, the most common size for applications such as M-commerce, unified messaging, video clips, video monitoring, chatting, pictures and file transfer. The deployment of CPCH maximizes the number of users sharing the network resources. CPCH is broadly considered to be the 3rd Generation GPRS equivalent of the UMTS standard. A pioneer in the wireless industry, GBT fully understood the importance of packet-switched technology in the ITUs quest to create a global wireless 3G standard. As early as 1996, GBT began collaboration with AT&T Labs on the development of a packet-switched W-CDMA technology solution. GBTs packet based technology was incorporated into "WP-CDMA" (Wideband Packet-CDMA) proposal and submitted to the ITU in January 1999. The committee responsible for WP-CDMA was chaired by AT&T Labs and Nokia. Besides GBT, AT&T Labs and Nokia, Ericsson, Hughes Network, OKI, Lucent, IDC, Bell South, among others, were part of this committee. Subsequently, GBT introduced its packet based technology, now known as the CPCH, into the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) forum, where standard organizations around the world cooperate to produce globally applicable Technical Specifications for a 3rd Generation (3G) Mobile System. GBTs CPCH was evaluated, accepted and incorporated into the 1999 release of the IMT2000 W-CDMA specification.

BENEFITS
Elaborate analysis and simulations1 have shown that deployment of CPCH in association with the FACH provides the following advantages over that of DCH: a 21-fold increase in spectrum efficiency in the uplink a 3.3-fold increase in spectrum efficiency in the downlink an increase in the hardware resource utilization by a factor of 16 CPCH also offers an 8-fold increase in throughput and spectral efficiency as compared to that of RACH. The use of the CPCH/FACH packet switched method provides a much higher throughput and spectral utilization efficiency as compared to other existing packet methods within UMTS. This will greatly reduce infrastructure cost and maximize profitability. CPCH offers the best and the most cost efficient implementation of the 3GPP W-CDMA standard for packet data transfer.
Simulation results are subject to changing assumptions. The Following Graphs are Illustrative Comparisons of the CPCH/FACH and the DCH/DSCH Operation
There are currently two modes of operations for packet data transport in the 3GPP W-CDMA: packet mode and circuit mode. In the packet mode, the downlink transport channels include use of the Forward Access Channel (FACH). The uplink transport channels for packet mode are Random Access Channel (RACH) and the Common Packet Channel (CPCH). In the circuit mode, DCH is used to transfer packet data in both directions. The Downlink Shared Channel (DSCH) can be used in either mode.

Inactivity Timer Ti = 0 sec FACH Overhead = 0.06*16 kb/s = 960 bits FACH Data / FACH Overhead = 3,840 / 960= 4 / 1

CALCULATION:
CPCH/FACH Supports 4 Times More Users Than DCH/DSCH

Inactivity timer = Ti sec Overhead=(Ti+0.06)*16 kb/s = 16* Ti Kbits (drop 0.06) Ti = 1 sec (currently considered from 1 to 3 sec) DSCH Data /DSCH Overhead = 3,840/(1*16,000) = 1/4

For Ti = 1 sec, (FACH/CPCH Users) / (DSCH/DCH Users) = (DSCH/DCH Data + DSCH/DCH Overhead) / (FACH/CPCH Data + FACH/CPCH Overhead) = (3,840+16,000) / (3,840+960) = 19,840/ 4,800 4/1
