6 Hours That Changed the World

Lesson Text: John 19:16-30; Matt. 27:31-54; Mark 15:20-39; Luke 23:26-47
I. Introduction
A. Friday April 7, 30 AD, there were 6 hours that changed the world.
B. To man, it makes no sense that Jesus should have to die on the cross.
1. Satan at first thought victory, but was dealt a crushing defeat.
2. 1 Corinthians 2:7-8 ESV Butwe impart a secret and hidden wisdom of
God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. (8) None of the
rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory.
3. Hebrews 9:28 ESV so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins
of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those
who are eagerly waiting for him.
C. We all have experienced some life changing moments.
1. Tonight we will talk about 6 hours that changed the world forever.
2. We will examine: 7 sayings of Jesus, 6 hours on the cross, 5 garments of
clothing, 4 piercings to His body, 3 Crosses at Calvary/ three hours of
darkness, 2between two thieves, 1. Son of God, Christ and Savior.
II. 7 Sayings of Jesus on the Cross
A. He knew no wrong
1. Read Isaiah 53:3-6
2. 2 Co. 5:21 knew no sin; tempted as we are yet without sin; Heb. 4:15
3. Luke 23:34 ESV And Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they know
not what they do." And they cast lots to divide his garments.
B. Salvation even to a thief
1. Read Luke 23:40-43
2. Still under law of Moses
C. Concern for his earthly mother
1. What agony for a mother to see her son
2. John 19:26-27 ESV WhenJesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he
loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!"
(27) Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that
hour the disciple took her to his own home.
D. Bearing the iniquity of us all
1. Isaiah 59:2 ESV but your iniquities have made a separation between you
and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he
does not hear.
2. Prophesied in Psalms 22:1
 3. Matthew 27:46 ESV And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a
loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" that is, "My God, my God,
why have you forsaken me?"
E. I thirst; John 19:28-29 ESV Afterthis, Jesus, knowing that all was now
finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), "I thirst." (29) A jar full of sour
wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop
branch and held it to his mouth.; Psalms 69:21
F. A job well-done; John 19:30 ESV When Jesus had received the sour wine,
he said, "It is finished," and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
G. Trusted God to take Him home

into your hands I commit my spirit!" And having said this he breathed his
last.
III. From 9:00 am to 3:00pm
A. Some much had already happened, it time
1. The last supper the night before
2. Praying in the Garden of Gethsemane; Being taken into custody
3. Taken to first Annas, then the Sanhedrin and Caiaphas
4. Delivered to Pilate; sent Herod; back to Pilate
5. Barabbas chosen as a murderer and thief over Jesus
6. Jesus is scourged; Pilate washes his hands
B. Carried His own Cross
1. Read Mark 15:16-25
2. Jesus was taken to a hill called "The Skull";Hebrew & Aramaic – Golgotha
3. Latin - from which English was transliterated - Calvary.
4. In Luke 23:33; KJV incorrectly uses Calvary instead of "The Skull."
5. A Harsh place, not beautiful; where men died in agony.
6. On a hill far away stood an old rugged Cross.
C. They offered him Vinegar (sour wine) and myrrh;
1. Matt. 27:34 Vinegar mixed with gall.
2. Gall is a bitter secrection of the liver; became - anything bitter.
3. A light wine rendered acid was a common drink of the Roman Soldiers.
4. myrrh was a bitter root used for various purposes; wise men.
5. Mixing with myrhh would make it bitter and create a spacy feeling.
6. Similar reaction most have to benadryl.
7. Like a driver, heavy machinary, etc.,needed control.
8. 6 hours of agony
