1. Introduction
LaCie 1394 peripherals were created to connect fixed and removable mass storage
peripherals to computers equipped with Macintosh OS 8.5.1 or later, Windows 98
Second Edition (SE) or Windows 2000, and 1394 ports complying to 1394 SBP-2
protocol. This protocol allows for high speed data transfers and should scale up as
FireWire itself and FireWire hard disks get faster.
The 1394 standard is relatively recent and the following paragraph gives you infor-
mation about this new bus.
1394 is like Universal Serial Bus (USB) in many ways, and the two technologies
coexist on Macintosh and PC based systems. While USB is great for lower-speed
input devices such as keyboards, mice, joysticks, and some mass storage devices,
1394 is aimed at higher-speed multimedia peripherals such as video camcorders,
music synthesizers, and hard disks. Both I/O technologies offer incredible conve-
nience through their “hot plug” capability, eliminating any need to turn off or restart
the computer when attaching a new peripheral. For additional ease of use, they also
feature automatic configuration, no device IDs or terminators, and simple-to-use
cables. USB can support up to 127 devices per computer, and 1394 up to 63
devices. Both technologies provide their own bus power, enabling some peripherals
to be even simpler. And both technologies are cross-platform industry standards.
In addition to offering new 1394 devices, third-party peripheral manufacturers have
announced products that convert older analog video equipment for use over 1394.
Finally, 1394 is a peer-to-peer technology, which means you can connect other
computer systems on the same 1394 bus. This enables a whole new world of shared
peripherals.
Two or more computers can share the same 1394 video camera or scanner when
they are “daisy chained” on the 1394 bus, provided the required sharing software
is available.
LaCie 1394 drives integrate IDE (Integrated Disk Embedded) storage devices. These
are connected to the 1394 port of your computer thanks to a controller card devel-
oped by LaCie. This card converts the 1394 bus signals to the IDE disk bus.

LaCie drives are available in different configurations as listed below:
Power LED
LaCie 1394 MO
LaCie 1394 removable drives (Magneto-Optical drives, CD-RW drives, etc...) will
store and exchange data between several computers.
Please note that to exchange data among several computers, cartridges must be
formatted by compatible operating systems and file systems.
Two file systems are currently available for PCs: FAT 16 and FAT 32 (appendix 1,
§C). Windows 98 second edition or Windows 2000 can convert your peripheral to
FAT 32. But if the computer on which you need to use your cartridge only works in
FAT 16, the data on your disk cannot be read. In order to avoid reading problems
we advise you to prepare cartridges for FAT 16. The Silverlining 98 software formats
cartridges in FAT 16 by default. This way, they can be read on all PC computers cur-
rently sold.

b. LaCie CD-RW drives.
With LaCie 1394 external drives and compatible software, you will be able to read
data or audio discs, to write your own CDs and to rewrite CD-RW discs through the
computer’s 1394 port. For more information on using CD recorders and CD rewriters,
please refer to the documentation relating to the recording software you are using.
Power LED
Just like LaCie 1394 3.5” format hard disks, the 2.5” mobility disks have been
specifically designed for use with portable computers (Notebook, palmtop, etc…).
Operating functions are identical. In certain cases, no power cable will be neces-
sary, since the computer’s 1394 port supplies sufficient intensity (1.5 Amp. max.)
In other cases, a 5V external power supply must be connected to the disk. However,
when the portable computer is used at the office, we recommend you connect the
external power supply of the drive to save your notebook’s battery.

To use your new drive, you must first install the necessary driver software. Please
refer to Section 4.0 for Windows 98/2000 or Section 5.0 for Mac OS 8.5.1 or newer.
To use the LaCie 1394 peripheral on a computer, connect the disk to the 1394 port
and turn on your computer, or connect while your computer is already running. To
make the best use of your peripheral, please follow these procedures:
(*) After this procedure, the partitions on the cartridge will be viewed by your system just as on a
hard disk.
If you divide a cartridge into several partitions (using hard disk type formatting) and
if the cartridge is not inserted in the drive when you start up your computer, the sys-
tem will detect only one partition during cartridge load. We recommend to make
only one partition on cartridges (removable-type formatting).
LaCie products have been developed for Windows 98 2nd Edition or above and
Windows 2000. If your machine runs under Windows 95 or Windows 3.x you must
install Windows 98 2nd Edition in order to connect a LaCie 1394 peripheral. The
procedures below describe the installation from diskettes. You can also proceed from
the CD-ROM delivered with your LaCie 1394 peripheral.
10
a. Installation of 1394 Windows drivers.
After the first connection of a LaCie 1394 peripheral the computer detects the drive
and Windows will install and mount it automatically as a new peripheral, even if you
have previously installed it on another port on the same 1394 bus.
Let Windows install the 1394 drivers of your LaCie drive.
Once the LaCie 1394 device is installed, a new icon corresponding to the 1394
peripheral will appear in “My Computer” if a Windows partition is available in the
device.
Nevertheless, LaCie 1394 hard disks and optical drives are not factory set to

Appendix 1. Technical information
The following technical information relates to your LaCie 1394 peripheral and gives
some practical advice:
a. Technical details
• up to 50MB/s transfer rate. Actual transfer rate limited by disk technology, not
interface.
• simple cable, hot-plug capability, no terminator, no device ID, up to 63 devices on
a chain.
• ideal for personal video editing and large scale imaging and graphics.
The ultimate full digital interface for MacOS, Windows 98SE and Windows 2000.
• Disk management is ensured by a set of SCSI II command codes, with access
controlled by Windows 98 ® or MacOS system files.
• You cannot boot from your 1394 peripheral under current Operating Systems.
• The LaCie drive manages power consumption. When the system is in power save
mode, the disk stops and access is impossible. When the system returns to full
power the disk will start up again before the system can access the disk.
• The 1394 disk will appear as an icon ”D: ” or other letter, in the Windows 98
”My Computer” directory. It will follow on from storage devices already installed
on your computer. If your disk isn’t recognized, check the command,
”Lastdrive=XX” isn’t shown on the start-up file ”Config.sys”. If XX is equal to ”D: ”,
you can’t have a disk with a drive letter superior to ”D: ” in your system. Look in
your Windows/MS-DOS User’s Guide for more information about the
”Lastdrive”command. On a Macintosh, each partition/volume will appear as a
separate ICON on the Mac desktop.
b. User advice
For best performance while the LaCie drive is making transfers, we recommend that
you wait before launching other applications using the 1394 port.
Anomalies may arise with computers with 1394 controllers that do not conform to
OHCI standards. Your product has been tested and checked on computers with Intel or
Apple 1394 platforms. In any other configurations we cannot ensure 100 % correct
operation. You may encounter problems. If this happens, proceed as follows:
23
• Check that your 1394 cable is certified IEEE 1394. This is the case with the cable
supplied with your LaCie drive.
• Do not connect up FireWire cables in a way that forms a ring of devices.
• There is no need for terminators on 1394 devices, so the unused 1394 connectors
should be left empty
• Check that the power supply and ground connection are correct.
• Disconnect your computer’s 1394 cable. Wait 30 seconds and reconnect it.
• Check the Windows 98 version installed on your computer. Supported versions of
Windows 98 are 2nd edition or above and Windows 2000. To check the version
number, right-click the My Computer icon, and select the Properties menu selec-
tion.
To proceed, launch the following command from the Windows Task Bar:
Start/Settings/Control Panel/System
The drive converter will convert your drive to the FAT32 file system, an improved for-
mat file system of the file assignment table (FAT or FAT16). When the drive is pre-
pared in this format, data storage is optimized, and hundreds of Megabytes of free
space are liberated on the drive. Applications run faster and your computer will use
less of the systems resources.
• Once you have converted your hard disk to FAT32 format with the help of the Drive
Converter, you cannot go back to FAT16 format unless you repartition or reformat
your FAT32 drive. If you have converted the drive on which Windows 98 is
installed, you need to re-install Windows 98 after you have repartitioned the drive.
• Most disk compression software is not compatible with the FAT32 format. If your
drive is compressed, you might not be able to convert it.
• If you convert a removable disk and want to use this disk with other operating sys-
tems that are not compatible with FAT32, you will not be able to access the disk.
• Due to the fact that former versions of Windows are not compatible with FAT32,
you will not be able to uninstall Windows 98 after conversion.
24
• Even though most programs will not be affected by the FAT16 to FAT32 conver -
sion, some disk utilities that require FAT16 format will not work with FAT32. A
message will appear if you use one of these utilities. Contact the disk utility
manufacturer to find out if there is a FAT32 compatible update.
• If you convert your hard disk unit to FAT32 using the drive Converter, you will not
be able to use the dual boot function to run former versions of Windows (Windows
95 [Version 4.00.950], Windows NT 3.x, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 3.x).
However, if you are connected to a network, former versions of Windows will be
able to access your FAT32 hard disk via the network.
To summarize, FAT 32 allows additional performance, improved hard disk manage-
ment (cluster sizes inferior to FAT 16) and reliability.
We recommend using FAT 32 in most cases, except for removable disk drive
cartridges, which will be exchanged and used in other drives connected to other
machines.

Appendix 2. Question & answers
What is FireWire?
26
• Flexible - the Standard supports free-form daisy chaining and branching for peer-
to-peer implementations
• Fast, guaranteed bandwidth – the Standard supports guaranteed delivery of time
critical data which enables smaller buffers (lower cost); also referred to as
isochronous.
FireWire supports two types of data transfer: asynchronous and isochronous. For
traditional computer memory-mapped, load and store applications, asynchronous transfer
is appropriate and adequate. One of FireWire's key features is its support of isochronous
data channels. Isochronous data transfer provides guaranteed data transport at a pre-deter-
mined rate. This is especially important for multimedia applications where uninterrupted
transport of time-critical data and just-in-time delivery reduce the need for costly buffering.
This leads to perhaps one of the most important uses of FireWire as the digital inter-
face for consumer electronics and AV peripherals. FireWire is a peer-to-peer inter-
face. This allows dubbing from one camcorder to another without a computer. It also
allows multiple computers to share a given peripheral without any special support in
the peripheral or the computers. It is a result of all of these features that FireWire has
become the digital interface of choice and its acceptance is growing. Sharing a
LaCie drive with multiple computers is not supported at this time.
Today when you ”surf the web” for information and click on a ”hot link” you must
wait for the bit-mapped date to download. Imagine, selecting an icon and almost
immediately that image is on your screen. FireWire is one of the technologies that
will help make this future a reality.
Several key trends and requirements are emerging:
• Consumer electronics and computers are converging.
• There is a desire to keep data digital for as long as possible as a means to reduce
system cost, complexity, and improve signal integrity.
• With the emergence of multimedia market, more and more data is video and
audio. The ability to work with time sensitive data is growing in importance.
• Miniaturization is continuing. Small products are favored for portability, conve-
nience, and material usage resources.
• Consumers are beginning to purchase computers the way they choose consumer
electronics. Their criteria are: reliability, convenience, and simplicity.
• The need and desire for Peer to Peer computing is growing. The master-slave
model is changing as computing becomes distributed.
FireWire meets these trends and requirements. FireWire provides a high perfor-
27
mance, easy to use, real-time, interoperable (industry standard), multimaster solution
to meet the needs of not only today's markets but tomorrow's.
Initially, FireWire will be the computer attachment of digital cameras and digital video
applications. IEEE 1394 has been accepted as the standard digital interface by the
Digital VCR Conference (DVC). The European Digital Video Broadcasters (DVB) have
endorsed IEEE 1394 as their digital television interface as well. The VESA (Video Experts
Standards Association) is evaluating IEEE 1394 for the digital home network media.
In the world of video editing, FireWire enabled cameras remove the need for costly
analog video computer frame buffers to capture digital video. FireWire will gradu-
ally improve upon existing interfaces such as SCSI. FireWire provides higher speed,
lower cost, and is more user friendly than most existing interfaces. SCSI products
such as scanners, CD-ROMs, disk drives, and printers are already evaluating when
they will move to FireWire.
FireWire has the bandwidth capacity to replace and consolidate most other periph-
eral connection communication methods in use today. Hot plugging, power sourc-
ing, and dynamic reconfiguration make FireWire a user-friendly alternative to
today's interconnects. These features will allow ”plugging in” of computer peripher-
als as easily as plugging in a home appliance.
FireWire promises to revolutionize the transport of digital data for computers and for
professional and consumer electronics products. By providing an inexpensive, high
speed method of interconnecting digital devices, FireWire is truly the versatile I/O
connection. Its scalable architecture and flexible peer-to-peer topology make
FireWire ideal for connecting audio, video, and computer devices. Its isochronous
support allows low cost implementations of multimedia interfaces. Every month more
digital electronics products are entering the market. These products will continue to
evolve and FireWire will be evolving with them.
You will find more information on Firewire at the following internet address:
http://www.apple.com/firewire
How can you compare a USB to a IEEE 1394/Fir ewire bus?
They are very different in terms of positioning, use, availability and price. USB character-
istics are set and available. USB is best suited to traditional computer connections like key-
boards, mice, game consoles and hand-held scanners. However the 12 Mbits/sec
Universal Serial Bus is also adapted to more advanced applications such as games,
hifi/audio and high compression video peripherals, like MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. And, using
USB peripheral doesn’t add much to the cost of the configuration. 1394 is suited to appli-
cations needing high-speed transfers like digital recorders, video cameras and video disk
drives (DVD).

1. Introduction
