Amplitude of Queer Desire in Dickinson's Erotic Language

Author: Juhasz, Suzanne. Publication info: Emily Dickinson Journal 14. 2 (2005): 24-33. ProQuest document link Abstract: Dickinson's poetics of erotic desire can best be understood as queer-a transgression of normative cultural systems that regulate gender, sexuality, and desire. This paper explores an aspect of Dickinson's masochistic fantasy, linguistically created with metaphor, that by way of figurative excess constructs a play of excitement and desire that bypasses traditional gender and sex arrangements and redefines the sexed body. Imagination and Perversity in The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.

Author: Moldenhauer, Joseph J. Publication info: Texas Studies in Literature and Language: A Journal of the Humanities 13 (1971): 267-280. ProQuest document link Abstract: In The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym Poe clearly associates the artistic imagination with what he elsewhere calls "the imp of the perverse" (sado-masochism): the source and stimulus of Pym's suffering is the imagination of the hero himself. By anagrammatic and symbolic naming, image-links, and parallels of personality, situation, and deed, Poe signals that the other main characters of the novel, and some minor ones, are alter-egos for Pym in his roles of artist, audience, aggressor, or victim. The supposed author of his own Narrative, Pym is moreover a theatrical figure, practicing dramatic improvisation within the action. In other respects as well he resembles the artist-protagonists of Poe's tales. Most importantly, the novel's major episodes originate in the hero's mind: Pym imagines or dreams his exploits, then lives them. The end which Pym's fancy generates and toward which his adventures lead is a moment of fatal unification in which the world's secret design coincides with the realitites projected by the artist's mind. Pym's quest for unity is perverse because irrational, amoral, and self-destructive; but it is also divinely creative, inasmuch as Pym spins out of himself the "plot" which ends in a state of inappetence and unity, or "absolute Irrelation."
