A Mothers Heart in Her Hands

A little over 23 years ago, I stood by the bedside of my mother who had suffered terribly with lymphatic cancer. She had told my father, my brother, and me how much she loved us, but that she wanted to go home, and we knew she was speaking of Heaven! Over the prior year, her body had been ravaged by the disease. But, one thing was remarkably untouched her hands! They were still graceful and lovelyand as I held them in my own hands, my heart was flooded by precious memories. Those hands had wiped my forehead when as a premature baby I had many fevers. Those hands worked tirelessly in washing, cooking, cleaning, and planting a garden. Her hands had also firmly and without hesitation restrained this strong-willed, first-born child, when I wanted to run out carelessly or move away in rebellion. I remember watching with amazement as those hands welcomed people constantly into our home, and as she opened her hand to the poor and reached out to the needy Type to enter text in our little community. Most importantly, those hands had opened a Bible every day and with her finger showed and taught me the Scriptures so that I would know eternal life. They were folded in intercessory prayer countless times as she lifted me up to the Father to walk in His ways and surrendered me to Him for His purposes. Cancer could not take away the beauty of her hands! Today, I remember her with great love and admiration as I give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates (Proverbs 31:31).
