8th Grade Student, Leads Family to be more Sustainable

INTRO8th Grade student, Rejath Rajesh Kumar has helped his family become environmentally sustainable. populations and developing countries. When such a big problem is going on, it is nice to see young people doing their part to help the world. By doing this project, I want to see how the small steps we do not have all of our decorative lights on. We use the air-con only for a short time. The television was the major reason, our consumption was a lot, now we have reduced the amount of hours watching TV. That was one of the major factors affecting the consumption and I think that this is also what led to the decrease in

Rejath Rajesh Kumar from The international school of Kuala Lumpur has successfully taught his family about the importance of environment through saving electricity. SAVE ELECTRICITY, GO GREEN!

As he progressed in his Grade that I take can help in Electricity Usage added Eight academic year, he learned the importance to be living sustainably through courses and learning such as, does this, just like the 8th

Rejath. If every one of us grade students, we can take

Malaysia Week, Math Yearlong down this problem in a matter electricity consumption at my of years. My family has also house. We are planning buy a project and other various courses. He finished his ultimate mission by reducing the electricity usage of his family. Electricity wastage is a huge problem in this rapidly growing world. Electricity can have a large impact on the environment. First off all, electricity is made by burning fossil fuel which a fast driver of global warming. Electricity is also a non-renewable source of energy, and the world needs more and more especially with the amount of the growing middle class

been doing an amazing job at this. We have reached many

new TV and I have requested and they accepted to buy a TV that is LED(NOT LCD or PLASMA) and which is energy efficient. You to can take steps like this young student and do good for the environment.

used to track his data

Here is a table that was provided by Rejath that he

As you can see from his table, he started of pretty small. The base data for Rejath and his family Rejath, he told us that his family started off pretty low. He described that they had pretty good

was 335 Kwh. That is pretty low compared to many others around the globe. On out interview with habits in concern about electricity. The magic of our usage being so low is that, my family uses far as concerned, the first 2 months for him and his family were amazing, but after that, they jumped up by 82 Kwh. That is a pretty rapid change. When we asked him about this after we

does not use air-cons much. I also appreciate my mom for helping me a lot with this project. So, as

analyzed the table, he replied, To tell the truth, I lost track of my progress. After 2 months of

achievement, I forgot about it. That is why the usage increased by that much. The lesson that I On the first 2 months, I was being very careful about using electricity but after that, I didnt. My

have learnt about myself and my habits is that, I recognized that small things can make a difference. carelessness is what caused that jump in the electricity usage. Then after that jump, he was back on track. We saw a very gradual but a decreasing shift in the usage of electricity. By April, he was pretty close to achieving only 300 Kwh/month.

How long will it take Rejaths Family to reduce their electricity consumption to 300 kWh per month

Now, we along with Rejath will be predicting at this rate, how many months will it take Rejaths family to reduce their electricity consumption to 300 KwH per month. To do this, Birst we will need a graph. Rejath made a scatter plot with a Bitted line going through it that shows his progress over time. The Bitted line touches 2 points and there are 2 and 3 points above it. From the graph, we can see that he is making a slow, but a pretty steady and gradual process. To predict this, we need to write an equation for the Bitted in slope-intercept form which is y=mx+b. In this equation, m represents the slope of the Bitted line and b represents the vertical intercept of this Bitted line. To Bind, the slope, you need to know the change in y/change in x. For this, we will be taking two points on the line, which are shown above. M= change in y/change in x, so when we put the numbers in, this is what it would look like 34-35/40-20= -1/20 . If you put that into decimal numbers, it would approximately be, -0.05 slope. As you see, that is pretty straight slope. Now, we have to Bind the vertical intercept. If you look at the graph, The V.I is at about 360-362. To Bind the vertical intercept, we put the current information into an equation and solve for b by substituting a point that is on the line. This is how the process goes: y=mx+b 35= -0.05(20)+b 35=-1+b +1= +1 36=b 36, on the grids in which we have would exactly be 360, which looks pretty good on the scatter plot. Now, we have our Binal equation in slope intercept form y =0.05x+36 Now when we put the 300 in, which is 30 in our graph, we would be able to know, how long it takes Rejath to reduce his electricity consumption to 300 Kwh. So, this is what it would look like: 30= 0.05x+36 -36=-36 -6=0.05x /0.05=/0.05 -120=x So, at this rate it would take Rejaths family 120 months or 10 years for Rejaths family to make their electricity consumption to be reduced to 300 KWh.
