Title: Prisoners Dilemma/Working Together Class/Subject: 6th Grade Date: April 5, 2013

Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: Students will discuss how Parvanas family works together and how people cooperate in order to accomplish goals. Students will reflect on their own ability to work together and how working to serve the groups best interests also serves your own best interests. Content Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1b Follow rules for collegial discussions, set specific goals and deadlines, and define individual roles as needed. Materials/Resources/Technology: The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis Six rolls of duct tape in different patterns Random number generator phone app Notes handout on family Disagreeing dos and donts rubric

Start of Class: Ask for two volunteers (use random number generator to choose). Stand back to back. Explain to students: You can put up 1 finger or 2 fingers. If you both put up 1 finger, youll each get one point. But if you put up 2 fingers, and the other person only puts up 1 finger, youll get two points and the other person will get no points. If you put up 1 finger, and the other person puts up 2 fingers, youll get nothing and the other person gets two points. If you have the same amount of points, you each get to choose one roll of duct tape. If one person has more points, he/she gets to choose two rolls of duct tape. Do three times (six roles of duct tape of different varieties). Explain that when psychologists do this experiment many times, it turns out its always better to choose 1. Youll always get more of the reward overall if you work together and make decisions that benefit both people. Introduction of Lesson: Discussion questions: How does Parvanas family work together? What roles do they each fill? If students are confused/not participating, have students turn and talk with a partner. Choose students who dont normally participate. Ask students to provide specific text evidence: when in the book did this event happen? Lesson Instruction: Fill out chart with your book club and then read chapter nine together and focus your discussion on how the family works together while also remembering that its best for the group if you all work together. Assessments/Checks for Understanding: Pass out disagreeing dos and donts rubric and have students evaluate themselves Throughout the class period, observe book clubs for book discussion grade

Closure/Wrap-up/Review: Line up quietly for restroom Self-Assessment: This lesson went very well. The students enjoyed being part of an experiment. One student recognized and asked if this was the prisoners dilemma, which she had learned about in another class, and was able to share her background knowledge with the class. This led to a short discussion about the prisoners dilemma experiment itself. The students were able to learn from the hands-on experiment how important it is to work together in their book clubs. In their disagreeing dos and donts rubric, many students were self-aware and reflected on how they might improve on disagreeing agreeably, a skill we have previously discussed.
