Video Lesson Plan: Energy & Metabolism Lesson Description: Provide students access to a computer lab (or their

own laptop) and the internet. Have them follow the video link provided below. While watching the video make sure the students record the corresponding data onto the worksheet (see handout below). If necessary allow them to pause or rewind to gather important information. After finishing the video the students will need to complete some short answer questions (see also handout below). Students can work individually or in pairs. Collect and grade all handouts. A relevant post-activity class discussion may also be appropriate. Purpose: To compare the effects of smoking and obesity on energy and metabolism levels of young adults. Prior Knowledge: Students will have already learned about the overall unit of Energy and Metabolism. Will also have covered the cardiovascular system earlier in the year but a brief recap may be needed. Objectives (Students Will Be Able To): Identify and differentiate between three "variables" in a study involving human subjects Make observations about the three participants in video Interpret visual and textual data from a recording Calculate BMI and Basal Metabolic Rate Consider some behavioral approaches they can use to help maintain or achieve a healthy body weight Materials Students: Computer and internet access Video Lesson Accompanying Handout(s) including BMI index chart (external) Video: Outdoor Track Heart Rate and Calorimeter Watch Subject #1 Adult, Male. Smoker/Overweight Subject #2 Adult, Female. Overweight/Non-smoker Subject #3 Adult, Male. Healthy weight/Non-smoker Procedures: Watch video and record data & observations. Allow students to pause or rewind video as needed. Evaluation: Complete both the data table worksheet and questions on handout. Also include BMI index table. Assessment: See handouts. Extensions: Class discussion on the dangers and consequences of obesity and smoking on young adults.

Name_____________________ Energy and Metabolism Worksheet

Date_________ Period_________

Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 X wt in kg) + (5 X ht in cm) - (6.8 X age in years) Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 X wt in kg) + (1.8 X ht in cm) - (4.7 X age in years) Note: 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 1 kilogram = 2.2 lbs.

Calculate the Basal Metabolic Rate for each participant. What does each subject's BMR tell you?

Using the chart provided evaluate the BMI for each participant. What did you find?

Do you think BMI is a reliable indicator for an individual's level of body fat/overall health?

Based on the video's results (i.e. max HR, resting HR, calories burned) what conclusions can you draw about Ryan's metabolism as compared to Tori's? And Brian's?

Concentrating specifically on max HR and post-mile HR data of each of the subjects we see a clear inconsistency between Ryan and the other two runners. What may account for this discrepancy?

What measures can you take to lower your risk for heart disease?

If you were to design your own metabolism experiment, what other variable(s) might you include, in addition to the ones we focused on today?
