You are to work in groups of a maximum size of 4 for this work. You can form your own groups or they will be allocated. Report and demonstration/viva will contribute towards marks. Groups will receive marks based upon work done in report, individual logbook and performance in demonstration/viva. Any PROBLEMS with group members should be reported as soon as possible. Action will be taken against members who do not contribute to the work. Senario. You are a small network consultancy company consisting of a number of network engineers. You have been commissioned to provide a new network for a company. You are to investigate, design, implement and provide a report for a network for this company. You will be required to show your network works and meets the given specification by giving a demonstration and answering questions. You will also be required to provide a report about the network. CHMR is a company with 4 offices (C, H, M and R). They require a company network to connect those offices and provide other services. They are also worried about security but do not fully understand what is required. Each office within the company is to be on its own Class B subnet with the number of hosts per office and main IP address provided by the company. All offices are to have dynamically allocated IP addresses using DHCP. Office R uses a mixture of Windows and Linux machines and wishes to share files using SAMBA. Other offices only use Linux machines. Office C employs many temporary staff and the manager wishes to stop all web access to and from that office network. Office M has some administrative workers who should be allocated even numbered IP addresses. Even numbered IP addresses are to be allowed ssh and ftp access, but other IP addresses for this office and the other offices are not. The administrators need to remotely access all the other PCs via VNC and the necessary software, suitable logins and security settings should be configured. Using the equipment in room LG45 you should produce a prototype network which shows the basic functionality of what will be implemented as the final

network. Equipment available is: various Cisco routers, 20 PCs, various cables. Windows and Linux are available. A representative from the company is available to clarify what is required and is contactable via email at sean@wmin.ac.uk

The Report Your report should explain the design and implementation of your network, explain how various parts were implemented, assumptions and decisions made, how testing was carried out. You should provide a short description of the various network subsystems you are using to implement your network in the report. It should also indicate which network engineer was responsible for which parts. Work may need to be checked and/or tested to ensure quality and a second network engineer may be responsible for that for each part. That responsibility should also be indicated in your report. All configuration files will be included as appendices. A short section explaining how secure the proposed network is and what further steps, if any, should be taken is to be included in the report for the company to study, so they can consider if you will be employed for a further task on security.

Logbooks Network engineers should maintain a logbook showing time spent on various activities and meetings attended. Experimental labs which carry out basic routing or other tasks will form part of this logbook and configuration files should be included. Logbooks will contribute to assessment marks.
