Rare working Apple-1 to go on auction block this month

A working Apple-1 from 1976 is expected to fetch nearly $400,000 later this month. An operational Apple-1 will go on the auction block later this month, and the rare computer is expected to fetch as much as $392,000. The 37-year-old machine -- thought to be one of only six in working condition -- is expected to sell for between $261,000 and $392,000 at the current exchange rate, according to German auctioneer Breker, which is conducting the sale. As impressive as that range may sound, it's far off the record mark of $640,000 set last December for Apple's first production computer. Constructed in 1976, the Apple-1 is one of only 200 produced. British auction house Sotheby's estimates that only 50 still exist. In a time when most personal computers were sold as self-assembly kits, the Apple-1 broke new ground as the first personal computer sold with a fully assembled motherboard. However, at a retail price of $666.66, the Apple-1 didn't include a casing, power supply, keyboard, or monitor. A cassette storage option could be purchased for an additional $72. The lot up for auction on May 25 includes the original owner's manual as well as a letter signed by Steve Jobs to original owner Fred Hatfield

Thought to be one of only six operational original Apple computers in existence, the Apple-1 is expected to fetch as much as $392,000.

bears the "Woz" mark of Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, who built the Apple-1 in Jobs' parents' garage.

Corked Mickey Mantle bat hits the auction block

New York Post ~ Say it aint so, Mickey. A corked bat reportedly swung by Yankees legend Mickey Mantle is hitting the auction block the Micks first known doctored bat. Grey Flannel Auctions is auctioning the Hillerich & Bradsby Co. bat, which was studied by PSA/DNA authenticator John Taube. Taube noticed alterations at the top of the bats barrel, and X-rays showed that the barrel had been drilled and filled with cork. This is the first corked bat of Mantle that we have seen or heard of, Taube wrote in his report.

Part of the bats handle is coated in pine tar, a characteristic seen on other Mantle bats from the 1960s. Mantle isnt alone in swinging a doctored bat. Players have been known to add cork and other substances to bats to improve swing speed, all in hopes of adding extra power to their swings. Mantle slugged 536 home runs during his Hall of Fame career with the Yankees, helping the team win seven World Series championships.

1 pound ground beef 1 Tbsp Dijon mustard 2 cloves minced garlic 2 green onions, chopped 1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese 1 egg Salt and freshly ground black pepper Put ground beef, mustard, garlic, onions, blue cheese, and egg into a large bowl. Use your hands to gently mix the ingredients together until just incorporated. Do not over-mix. Shape into patties, about 1/2 inch thick and larger than your bun. Chill until you are ready to cook. Prepare charcoal or gas grill for cooking over high direct heat. Using tongs and a folded up paper towel dipped in vegetable oil, oil the grill grates. Make sure grill is hot and well oiled before laying down the patties. Season patties with salt and pepper.

Place the patties on the clean, well-oiled grill grate. Grill the burgers for about 5 minutes per side. Do not press down on the burgers while cooking. If you don't have a grill, you can use a grill pan or a cast iron frying pan for the burgers.

Lemon Frosted Lemon Cake

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 cup granulated white sugar 4 large eggs 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Zest of 1 large lemon 2 cups all purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice Icing: 1 cup confectioners' (powdered or icing) sugar, sifted 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and place rack in the center of the oven. Butter, or spray with a nonstick spray, a 9 inch springform pan and then line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper. Set aside. In the bowl of your electric mixer, with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy and pale in color (about 3 minutes). Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Beat in the vanilla extract and lemon zest. Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt and then add to the batter along with the lemon juice. Mix only until incorporated. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with an offset spatula. Bake about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Place on a wire rack to cool, then gently remove the sides of the pan. For the icing, combine the sifted confectioners' sugar with the 2 tablespoons lemon juice. (You want the icing to be thicker than a glaze but still thin enough that it will just run over the sides of the cake. If not the right consistency add more lemon juice or powdered sugar, accordingly.) Frost the top of the cake, allowing the icing to drip down the sides. Let the icing set before covering. Makes one - 9 inch cake.

Kobe Bryant, mom feud over N.J. auction

Lakers star trying to block planned June sale of memorabilia initiated by Pamela Bryant
Jim Walsh, The (Cherry Hill, N.J.) Courier-Post ~ WEST BERLIN, N.J. -A South Jersey sports-collectibles firm is at the center of a family fight between basketball star Kobe Bryant and his mother. Goldin Auctions of West Berlin wants to sell more than 100 items from the Los Angeles Lakers' pro career and his days as a high school player in suburban Philadelphia. The keepsakes including uniforms, rings and trophies would be offered on consignment for Pamela Bryant, the athlete's mother. But Kobe Bryant is trying to block the planned June auction, insisting he owns the memorabilia. The dispute moved to a federal court in Camden Thursday, when an attorney for the auction house requested a court order to allow the sale. The filing noted Goldin Auctions already has paid a $450,000 advance to Pamela Bryant, who wanted to buy a new home in Nevada. If a judge approves the sale, bidders could compete for shorts, jerseys, jackets and varsity letters that Bryant wore at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa. They could vie for NBA AllStar and Championship rings, a 1996 Gatorade National Player award and a 1992 Sonny Hill League Future Stars Champion Trophy. The lineup also would include a team jersey from Bryant's childhood in Italy, which is described as "the earliest known Kobe Bryant game-worn jersey ever offered at auction." Bryant lived in Italy when his father, Joe, a former Philadelphia 76er, played professional basketball there. Pamela Bryant contends the collectibles have been in her possession for at least 15 years, a court filing says. It adds she stored the items in West Berlin over the past five years at a cost of $1,500 per month. According to the filing, Pamela Bryant "indicated her son gave these items to her, stating 'Here Mom, these are for you.' " The athlete's attorney sees it differently. "Mr. Bryant's personal property has ended up in the possession of someone who does not lawfully own it," asserted Mark Campbell of Loeb & Loeb in Los Angeles. Goldin's attorney, Jeffrey Cohen of Cherry Hill, N.J., could not be reached. According to the lawsuit, Kobe Bryant's attorneys contacted Goldin Auctions Tuesday, the same day the planned auction was announced. Their cease-anddesist letter insisted the auction be canceled and the items returned to the player. In seeking an injunction against Kobe Bryant, Goldin's attorney cited the potential loss of the advance payment to Bryant's mother, as well as the loss of a 20 percent commission on auction sales. The filing also noted Pamela Bryant still has some 900 items from her son's career with an estimated value of $1.5 million.

Answers To This Weeks Puzzle

Two never-before-seen Bob Dylan lyric sheets are hitting the auction block.
The legendary singer typed up the lyrics to Go Away You Bomb and I Want That Bomb in 1963 for Izzy Young, who owned the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village in New York City. Speaking to R o l l i n g Stone magazine, Young explains, "I asked everyone I knew to write a song about the nuclear bomb. Bob Dylan came in literally the next day and handed these to me." Young, who moved to Sweden in the 1970s, has kept the anti-nuclear bomb songs in his private collection for 50 years, but he is now selling the sheets off to help cover costs for the Folklore Centrum store he runs in Stockholm. He adds, "My daughter, who is 39, came to me and said, 'Papa, I'm sick of you surviving by miracles.' You have to sell that Bob Dylan song.' She convinced me I had to, and she moved it to a bank vault for me. It's going to be the first time in my life I'll have real money." The lyrics are expected to pull in as much as $56,000 (35,000) when they go under the hammer at Christie's auction house in London next month (Jun13).

Gandhis personal items, letters up for auction

An auction of Mahatma Gandhis personal effects and documents will take place in Ludlow, U.K., later this month. Up for sale are articles that belonged to the Father of the Nation when he was recovering from illness at Juhu in 1924, including his personal prayerbeads, shawl made from linen thread that he spun himself, bed sheet, personal bowl with fork and spoon, drinking cup and ivory-carved Three Wise Monkeys that he owned. The sale takes place on May 21 during the next Mullocks Auction of important historical documents at the Ludlow Racecourse. Gandhis will and power of attorney, which he wrote in 1921, and a series of important letters are also up for auction. One of these, written in 1937 settles a highly controversial dispute, which was then taking place within the Indian National Congress. There are also original portraits and photographs of Gandhi, some of which have been personally signed by him. This is unquestionably one of the most important sales relating to Indian history to be staged in recent years, commented Mullocks Historical Documents Expert, Richard Westwood-Brookes. We are offering many highly important and unique items and we are expecting strong interest from around the world, he said.
