Final Reflection Coming into college, I was under the impression that English 1101 would be one of the worst and more difficult classes that I would have to take. It was instilled in me, by my high school English teachers, that English would be very difficult in college mostly because of the way they structured their writing assignments. So upon entering this class, I learned that that statement is not necessarily true. English this semester has been anything except difficult. In English 1101, we have had the opportunity to write about several things we are familiar with, like: our literacy and discourse communities. Writing on familiar subjects, has made me more confident as a writer and student. How? In high school, there were different structured topics that werent very interesting. Being that the writing werent interesting, it was very often that I had to write without passion. So coming to college and writing with familiarity has made writing a lot more enjoyable. I feel that my best work so far is my literacy memoir. My literacy is something that I am very familiar with. My memoir shows a transition through my life on how I learn and become more literate. My literacy memoir is my best writing because it evokes the most passion. My literacy is something I am very fond and that made writing about it even easier. The next thing close to my best work is my discourse community paper. In it I focus on the registration period only. I focus on this period only because writing on my daily experiences with the community would be very difficult. Writing about the discourse community also goes back to familiarity. Working in my schools guidance office is something I

know a lot about; therefore, I only had the job of getting all the information on paper in a structured manner. After my two main written works, I have ten informal writings. When selecting which ten to add to my portfolio, I kept in mind that I really needed to exhibit some good work for the view. The informal writings are things Im also passionate about also. I have a section filled with informal writings dedicated to Ebonics because it was something that I really enjoyed writing about. The portfolio only gives a glimpse of my thought process and who I am as a student. I feel it is evident throughout my drafts, I am trying to make my writings interesting and more informative for the reader. When writing any of my papers, I never wanted to miss any detail that I thought was important to the reader. So in when making my revisions, it was very often that I added book titles or made a statement clearer. I also wanted to make my work entertaining so that I kept the reader interested in what I had to say. Overall I think Ive done a good job of that.
