DIY GIGS IN LEEDS
SEPTEMBER 2008
As Earth Wind And Fire will tell you, September is that month you
will always remember. The keenly observant will notice that we
carry no gigs at The Common Place this month. Their
performance and alcohol license was revoked last month, the
culmination of a great deal of hassle from the police and local
authority following the screening of a film showing police
violence. Naturally, the Common Place are appealing against the
withdrawal of their license; naturally, this costs a lot of money. A
benefit CD is in production and will be available soon. For more
information or to help please visit www.thecommonplace.org.uk
or check the C&R forum for updates.
HAPPENING ALL THIS MONTH

place at the Central Library in September this year. It’s a

Leeds.

Donald Trump & The Planets DIY Blockbuster featuring

Roman Alaska World Enterprises Present:

THE PILGRIM FATHERS - ”It’s music for astronauts to die to”…

Heavy, monumental, mighty-vast, cosmic punk rock trailblazers
and Radio 1 Rockshow favourites.

WETDOG - ‘Precious ditty’s clatterpulted into the audience by a

mix of wonky-machinegun twang and clatter-chatterbox- wallop-
pop toons and then stirred together with doom-laden bass and
nice jangley German drumming - ‘3 ice-cool females…
Harmonies to die for…if only all bands rattled like this’ - Everett
True - New LP out on Angular Recording Corporation

CAPTAIN BLOOD BLOOD & THE SEA DOGS …Will bring to

Leeds unsettling and darkly surreal tales from their battered lime-
cliff, harbour-town resort with sinister waltzing, cheeky baseball
cap bass and twangy tuneful twists. If Sergio Leone had made
nautical-themed westerns it would sound a bit like this.

PRIVATE TROUSERS - Snaggle-toofed colossal clunk punk with

homemade instruments and Casios combining in an inexorable
bric-a-brac vs radio shack battle conjuring the Beastie Boys and
Danielson Famile to commentate with London accents.

For information about the DIY Blockbuster please visit

www.myspace.com/romanalaska or stop by the 42 New Briggate
Gallery where the ‘Donald Trump and The Planets group show
and DIY blockbuster’ is being held (Friday 5th September ,
Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th).
Saturday 6th September, 8pm at the Brudenell Social Club, £4
STENCH ON CHINCHILLA PRESENT…..

PRINTED CIRCUIT - “Leeds-based Claire Broadley (Printed

Circuit) makes music for dealing with the urban environment.
Music made out of all your favourite colours (the strobing
clashing palette of Spectrums loading), amped up into a retina-
bending neon and mapped into sound by your favourite ever
instruments (C64’s, Playstation’s, SNES’s). There’s no reason
why high streets can’t be the colour of this album’s Rainbow
Islands-esque cover art. There’s no reason why music can’t be
allowed to make you happy instead of just pretending to make
you sad.” - Plan b magazine
INDICA RITUAL - “Quirky, jerky, incredibily clever electro pop
from these 5 whippersnappers. They write songs that Talking
Heads wish they had, and DEVO probably did when they were
off their cake. And fantastic to watch live too! we like you indica
ritual!” - Generation::Live magazine
PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ - What is known is that Puttin’ On The
Ritz consists of two human beings, both male and above the age
of consent. They have been known to imbibe large quantities of
alcohol before, during, and after their performances; for some
reason this is their preference. Occasionally this obsession with
intoxication produces disastrous results; other times they are
merely threatened with violence.
COWTOWN - will provide anybody with a valid reason to turn up
your stereo and dance like a maniac dressed in stripey knitwear.

THE UPRIGHTS Kick ass leeds three piece combine mutant

minutemen new wave funk with scuzzy grunge rock
Thursday 11th September, 8pm at The Packhorse, £3

CHAPS - Lo Fi, Post Riot Grrrl, Hissyfitting punk-rock DRAMA.

COREY O’S - Sissycore punk-kiddies, check it

BEARDS - Dont fink I need to add a description here, but just

incases: AGITATED-DANCE-PARTY-RAINBOW-MOLLUSCS

VILE VILE CREATURES - Someone from Plan B described

them as “a dollshouse falling down a staircase”, but satin
rhythms & velcro beats is also apt (with a megaphone thrown
into the mixx donchaknow??)
Thursday 11th September, 7.15pm at the Brudenell Social Club,
£6 advance / £7 on the door; presented by Forest of Sound

Wildbirds & Peacedrums - Voice and rhythm. Vocals and

percussion. All you need, as long as your voice is as passionate
as Mariam’s… and your rhythm is as strong and hypnotic as
Andreas’… Wildbirds & Peacedrums play a mix of impassioned
leftfield pop, soulful blues and all out experimental electronic
weirdness from the heart.

Seabear are quite simply stunning - an band of seven based

around Sindri Már Sigfússon, they make a huge folk/pop noise
with sense of restraint and the joys of lo-fi. They quite easily
upstaged Múm on their UK tour last year, and with good reason -
there’s no pretension here, no easy cliche - instead you get a
fine group of people caught up in the joy of music. Brilliant.

Peter Broderick - Multi-instrumentalist Peter plays gorgeously

melancholy music - often minimalistic and beautifully moving, but
with a crescendo that catches you out every once in a while. This
guy creates truly brilliant music and has a range of talents that
his recent tours as part of Efterklang’s live band have only hinted
at.

Michael Rossiter - Deftly fingerpicked folk loveliness from a

local favourite. Michael can write a song, without doubt… but he
matches this strength with his ability to perfectly execute
traditional folk as well as his own material, and to sing from his
heart and get the perfect tones from his guitar. He’ll make the
perfect opening to a phenomenal night!
Saturday 13th September, 6.30pm at
The Subculture, Merrion Street, £5
Councillors Cox and Evans present..

GHOST MICE - Acoustic Punk Rock from Florida (Plan-It-X/No

Idea Records)
THE DAUNTLESS ELITE - Leeds Melodic Punk
ACHTUNG EVERYBODY - Fast 90’s style Punk Rock and also
Leeds most random looking band.

Sutcliffe (Hull)

COPS AND ROBBERS PRESENT

MOLLIGER

PARTY LIKE IT’S 2009! If Gay Against You made an album for
naughty toddlers, it would probably sound a bit like Molliger. All
the way from Brisbane, Australia, Gwen and Tutts make a fucked
up duo electro racket in the style of Toxic Lipstick, Jean Genet
and early Hawnay Troof. Gwen sings about stinky used condoms
and kicking people in the cunt. Tutts throws himself around her
feet while thrashing his guitar over the super fast electro backing
track. Total party in the purest, silliest and most energetic sense,
Molliger have shared stages with the likes of Ove-Naxx, Kevin
Blechdom and Max Tundra and they are FUN! This is definitely a
one-off and not to be missed. So it’s a Tuesday, so what! Fuck it!!

+ PRINTED CIRCUIT and CAATAAAN

Friday 19th September, 8pm at The Packhorse, £4

An evening of ridiculously fast grinding hardcore that’s not to be

missed! Sylvester Staline are over from France and make a
return to Leeds, bringing with them A Den of Robbers from
Belgium who are making their Leeds debut. Local lads The
Afternoon Gentlemen and Warboys are also bringing the sick
mosh! No messin’ about style!

Saturday 20th September, 4pm at The Library, £5/6

Brew Records & Beard presents….

THE PLIGHT + BLACKHOLE + THE COMPUTERS + THE

FREEZING FOG + SEVEN CROWNS + DEAD FORMATS +
THE ARTERIES + CUTTING CLASS

Thursday 24th September, 8pm at The Packhorse, £3

Doot Fest (n + 1), featuring:

Ewan D Rodgers - Folk n’ that

The Medusa Snare - Adam John Miller based indie pop magic
The Contortionist - slightly genius melodic folk pop
Vest for Tysso - Keyboardy goodness
Saturday 27th September, 6pm at The Packhorse, £6/7

Eight bands play across two stages in the same venue - four
chosen by local DIY promoters Forest of Sound, four chosen by
fantastic local independent label Gizeh Records.

Rothko - Hailing from London, Rothko began way back in 1998

and have over the years produced some wonderful records on
numerous labels including Trace and the French Bip Hop imprint.
Much of Rothko’s music is piano and guitar-led with swells of
ambience and field recordings underneath. This is their first
Leeds show in a long long time.

The Boats - Andrew R Hargreaves and Craig Tattersall (formerly

of legends Hood and The Remote Viewer) reside in Burnley,
where they spend their time producing amazingly delicate pieces
of organic electronic music.

Glissando - This is the Leeds date on Glissando’s UK tour.

Usually a duo but for this tour a 4 piece, expect haunting vocals
shimmering melodies along the lines of Low, Rachel’s and
Cocteau Twins.

Pan Am Scan - Formed over the geographic divide between

Berlin and London, Pan Am Scan create minimalist soundscapes
from vibraphones and live electronics, delicately layered and
finding the perfect balance between Steve Reich-esque melodies
and slow motion fractured electronica beats and clicks.
Sleepingdog - New Gizeh signing Sleepingdog is the project of
Belgian-based musician Chantal Acda. Her ‘Polar Life’ album
was constructed with the help of Adam Wiltzie (Stars of the Lid)
and previous tours with the likes of Iron and Wine and Lambchop
give some indication of where Chantal’s music lies. Comparisons
to Hanne Huckleberg and Joanna Newsom are somewhere near
true and Chantal easily hold her own in this company with her
beautiful and rich vocals, occompanied by just a piano or a
guitar.

Winter North Atlantic - Also known as Ed Carter of Sheffield,

Winter North Atlantic is a man caught somewhere between the
hypnotic brilliance of the best instrumental hip-hop, the pure
emotion and widescreen landscapes of Labradford and Mice
Parade’s classical guitar heart. Luckily for us, this confusion
produces a heady brew of haunting melodies, beautifully finger
picked guitars and finely crafted beats.

Spokes - mostly instrumental, always captivating post-rock

aceness. This is not your average quiet-loud band, they play with
an edge of longing and sadness rarely seen in this genre and
their ‘People Like You Like You’ album is indeed a fine piece of
work that comes highly recommended. Recent slots at the Big
Chill and Rockness festivals prove these lovely peeps are on the
march.

Plus one more act TBC.

Cops And Robbers is a free monthly guide to DIY gigs in
Leeds; something which is hard to define but we tend to
know it when we see it. These events don’t exist to make
a profit for anyone involved, they are organised for the
sheer pleasure and enjoyment of playing, organising or
attending a gig. Look for us every month in Jumbo, Crash,
and other places around town, and at various gigs.
