BRIEF – REPORT
1 INTRODUCTION
ASHOK NAGAR district with limited facilities, percentage of irrigation being less
then 4, depends entire on rainfall for the maturity of the crop due to uncertain rainfall the
cultivators this area are not able to make their both ends meet. Thus the role of irrigation in the all
round integrated development of ASHOK NAGAR district can not be cover emphasized. The
mainstay of the majority of the people in area is agriculture. The land is fertile and the farmers are
pains taking hard, yet they do not get adequate return for their toil because of scanty rain resulting
in poor production
2 NECESSITY
Unlike some of the more fortunate area of the country the cultivation in this
region almost entirely depends upon rainfall for the maturity of the crops grown in Kharif and
Rabi season and is often subjected to drought conditions owing to the vagaries of mansoon due to
its late commencement and early cessation and uncertain winter rains threatening the rainfed
crops on whose prospects the economy of the cultivators and the welfares of agricultural labours
depends, call for immediate attention to provide irrigation facilities to the crop and employment,
to the labourers. Therefore in such a situation the construction of an earthen dam on MARHI
KANOONGO nala near village Devpur to irrigate 160.00 Ha of C.C.A. is an imperative need to
serve the dual purpose of providing employment to the labour and irrigation facilities to the
cultivators.
3 PROJECT SUMMARY
MARHI KANOONGO Nala tank project costing to Rs.227.87 Lakhs
envisages the construction of an earthen dam across local nala a tributary to river Parwati of
Chambal basin near village Deopur intercepting a catchments area of 10.80 sq.km. to impound
capacity 1.5597 M.Cum of water to provide irrigation facilities to 160.00Ha. of C.C.A. in two
number of village namely are as deopur and Chackdeopur to poor cultivators of block,
Tehsil of district ASHOK NAGAR, where there are no existing irrigation facilities,
through a net work of canal system of 2.50 Kms. long with a head discharge of 0.11 cumecs
4 LOCATION :-
It is located in the ASHOK NAGAR legislative Assembly Constituency No 29
ASHOK NAGAR of block and tehsil ASHOK NAGAR of ASHOK NAGAR district
represented by shri Kanhiya Lal Agrawal the sitting M.L.A. The dam site is approachable by
3.00 Km long cart track near village Deopur, left side of Patai – Umri asphalt road from 12th
Km. after crossing 12.00 km distance from ASHOK NAGAR by NH- 3 A.B. Road, so total
distance 27.00 Km. from district head quarter ASHOK NAGAR. It can be located on the survey
of India toposheet no.54-H/5 at a latitude 24º46’00” and longitude 77º16’15”.
5 PROJECT PROPOSALS
(i) DAM :-
A main earthen dam of 960.00 M. long and 11.20M.high maximum across the
nala to impound 1.5592 Mcum of water forming a lake with water spread area57.00 hectares at
F.T.L. for irrigation purpose. The zonal section of dam adopted as per T.C.No. 40 dated
27.12.69. of Chief Engineer, irrigation department.
( ii ) WASTE WEIR :-
Waste weir of 90.00 m. long bye wash have to be constructed on left flank to
dispose off the 115.57 cumecs the designed discharge .
( iv ) CANAL SYSTEM :-
A main canal of 2.50 Km. long with the maximum carrying capacity of 0.11
cumecs head discharge takes off from the head sluice on right flank at R.D.660.00 M. of dam
has been proposed.
6 HYDROLOGY :
The catchments area of the Nala at the proposed dam site is 10.80 Sq.Km.
there is no rain-gauge station in the catchments area. The rainfall data of the ASHOK NAGAR
rain gauge station for 36 year has been adopted to work out 75% dependable yield from the
catchments area. The 75% dependable rainfall is 740.00mm and the corresponding yield is
0.824 Mcum. per sq. mile of the catchments area . Therefore for whole of the catchments area
of10.80 sq, km. with 0.90 dimination factor. 75% dependable yield works out to 3.809 Mcum.
Average annual rainfall 922.50 mm and mean manson run off from catchments area with
considering 0.9 diminishing factor calculated is 7.10 Mcum..
8 CROP PATTERN:
(a) Existing :- The gross command area of the project is 225.00 Ha out of which the
cropped area is 160.00 Ha. the crop grown in Kharif are maize, jowar, mung, lineced
and others and in Rabi season are ordinary wheat, gram, lentil and Dhaniya etc. all are
rainfed crops.
(b) Proposed :- Soyabeen 80.00 Ha. Kharif, ordinary wheat 110.00 Ha and
Hybrid wheat 50.00 Ha.in Rabi crop are proposed for irrigation. Thus the proposed
annual irrigation is 240.00 Ha and equivalent area of Rabi is 253.33 Ha with the crop
intensity of 150 %
9 RESERVOIR
It is proposed to store 1.5592 Mcum. of water as gross storage and 0.3790 Mcum
of water as dead storage. The dead storage is computed to a silting rate of 0.50 Acre ft. /
year / sq. mile of catchments area for the 100 years. Therefore the live storage has been
provided 1.1807 Mcum. to irrigation 160.00 hectare of C.C.A.

P need for the project 11 % is added to the cost of Unit –I and Unit –II excluding cost of
B- Land under which adequate provision has been made to acquire private land coming
under the submergence of the reservoir and additional land required for the construction
of a dam and canal system .
The over all cost of the project is to Rs.227.87 Lakhs where as unit – I Head
work& unit II Canal work amount is Rs. 197.16 /- & Rs. 30.71 /- respectively to provide
annual irrigation of 240.00 Ha. of mixed cropping pattern. The Rabi equivalent area in
terms of ordinary wheat is 253.33 Ha. The cost per hectare of the project on annual
irrigation is to Rs. 94946 /-and on Rabi equivalent area is Rs. 82115 /- which is with in
the limits fixed by the Government of M.P. Irrigation Department.
The estimate has been framed on the basis of UCSR in force from 1. 9. 2003 of
Water Resources Department Government of Madhya Pradesh.
17. RECOMMENDATION
The area under command of the project has been taken on non-tribal
area of the district special preference is being given for development of this block. The
percentage of irrigation in ASHOK NAGAR Tehsil is very less from Government
source i.e 3.06 % Which will be increased 3.38 % after completion of the scheme .As
the land under command is fertile and its productivity will be increased highly after
irrigation . The cultivators are mainly poor and back ward class with some 10 %
percent of s/c and s/t in project area. They will be benefited after completion of this
scheme. The cultivators are irrigation minded and will demand water as soon as
available to them .

It is assumed that canal will run for 21days for 12 hours in a month =21 x 12 x 60 x 60 =907200 seconds
Maximum draw off in the month Jan.= 1225 x 2.47 x43560 / 12 X 1000000 = 10.983 Mcum
= 10.983 Mcum
Add 15 %for future expansion = 0.15 x 10.983 = 1.647 Mcum
Add 15 % for out of command = 0.15 x 10.983 = 1.647 Mcum
Add 35 % for canal losses = 0.35 x 10.983 = 3.84 Mcum
Total draw off = 18.121 Mcum
Total draw off in cusecs (18121000 /907200 ) = 19.975 Cusecs or 0.565 Cumecs
Duty at canal in Acre / Cusecs = ( 1605.05 - 741 ) /19.975 = 43.26 Acre /Cusecs
