Dear Dr. Winter, I have a missing upper molar (3rd in from wisdom). I was told an implant would not work there. Are my only options a partial or permanent bridge - or is there another alternative? Dear Donna, without seeing you I cannot comment on what your other doctor has told you. You may have deficient bone height or width that would make it more expensive to place an implant but that doesn't make the implant impossible. It just means you need to go through more steps and greater expense. You may require sinus augmentation, or block grafting to create a proper foundation for an implant. If that is the case, then perhaps a bridge is a more cost effective way to replace the missing tooth. Partial dentures put pressure on the adjacent teeth so I try to always help people to choose a fixed option versus a removable partial denture option. Nobody enjoys taking their teeth out at night before they go to sleep. Some dentists offer Maryland or Virginia bridges, which have small wings that are cemented to the adjacent teeth. While these may be an option they can become uncemented more easily than a traditional bridge so they are not used with as much frequency as a traditional bridge. Dear Dr. Winter, I'm very interested in a complete mouth makeover. I'm only 26, but my father and I both have severe erosion. All of my teeth will need to be removed and are worn down and decayed. Some are broken off at the bone level and I can no longer smile. Please let me know my options. Dear Rachel, this is far too difficult to answer on the internet with no x-rays, photos or an idea of your budget. There are many levels of dentistry from dentures to Snap-on Dentures on implants to full mouth reconstruction with implants and grafting. The question you have to ask yourself is what is your budget for this year and the next two years. Then a complete examination and x-ray visit would be performed in order to give you options for different solutions based upon what you can realistically afford. Sometimes we can offer you sequenced dentistry to offer you the dentistry in stages until you can achieve the desired results. We offer interest free financing to help with more complex treatment options. Articles on Upgradeable Dentistry as well as videos, photos and financial options can be found on our websites.

Make safe choices for prom night

The following was taken from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Web site. Prom is one of the highlights of the high school experience. While planning and enjoying the big night, make smart decisions to help keep you safe and lower stress. If you or someone you know is going to the prom, here are a few tips to help make it fun and safe. Look and Feel Great Get in shape slowly and wisely. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, eat less junk food (i.e. foods and drinks high in calories, with saturated fat, or with added sugars), and dont crash diet. Think about what you drink. Choose drinks with no or low calories and fat, such as water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea. Find fun ways to stay active, such as walking, dancing, gardening, swimming, and more. Be active for 60 minutes a day most days of the week. Get plenty of sleep. Protect your skin. Enjoy the skin you're in, and protect it. You dont need a tan to be beautiful, and you definitely dont need a sunburn. Just a few serious sunburns can increase your risk for skin cancer later in life. Make sure you protect yourself from the harmful effects of UV rays. Avoid indoor and outdoor tanning, and use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher. Follow directions, cautions, and warnings on hair products. If youre changing hairstyles or hair color on your own, follow all directions, cautions, and warnings on the label. Dyes and relaxers can hurt skin, hair, and eyes. Do a patch test before using dye on your hair. If a rash develops, dont use the dye. Never dye eyebrows or eyelashes, as it might cause blindness. If in doubt, let the professionals handle it. Test cosmetics before use. For some people, using cosmetics like makeup or deodorant may cause itching, redness, rash, sneezing, or wheezing. Allergies may happen the first time a product is used or after multiple uses. Always test a product in a small area first. Follow all directions, cautions, and warnings on the label. Stop using the product if problems develop. Remove it before bedtime to prevent skin and eye irritation. Wear comfortable shoes. High heels may be in style, but they can increase your chances of falling if theyre too high, uncomfortable, or not something you usually wear. Prevent injury and wear comfortable footwear that wont affect how you walk or dance. Stress Less Watch your budget. If cost is an issue, look for alternatives to spending a lot of money. Expensive doesnt necessarily mean better. Plan ahead for safety. Tell family what your plans are ahead of time. Make an agreement with friends to keep a check on each other during the evening. Be sure someone you trust is available for you to call if your plans change or you need help. Remember that you don't need a date to have fun. Whether you plan to go with a date, with friends, or on your own, the point is to have a good time. Going with a group or meeting friends at the event can be just as fun as going with one special person. Whether you're going solo or with a group, make sure you don't drink and drive. Just say no. Some people feel pressured to drink, smoke, use drugs, or have sex on prom night by friends or the media. However, drinking is responsible for over 4500 deaths among young people each year and is associated with other problems like STDs and unintended pregnancy. Alcohol and drugs impair judgment and may result in being harmed or harming others. Just because others do something doesnt make it a good idea or right for you. Its OK to say no. Protect Yourself Travel safely. Teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are four times more likely than older drivers to crash. Always wear a safety belt. Dont drink and drive, and dont get in a car with a driver who has been drinking. Teen dating violence. Dating violence is a very real issue for many people. Many teens do not report it because they are afraid to tell friends and family. The abuse can be verbal, emotional, physical, or sexual. Respect yourself and others, avoid alcohol and drugs, and tell family or call 911 if you or someone you know is being abused. Know before you go to after-parties. If you plan to go to an after-prom party, be sure it is adult-supervised and has an observed start and end time. Go with a "buddy" to ensure each others safety. Avoid using alcohol and drugs. Make sure parents know where you are at all times in case of emergency. Call a parent, guardian, or someone you trust in case plans change or you need help.

Seeing the change: Evers visits Falls district

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers got an in-classroom look at how education is changing during a visit to the School District of Menomonee Falls April 30. Evers day started with a presentation by Falls district staff at the Menomonee Falls Community Center followed by classroom visits at Riverside Elementary School and North Middle School. During an interview after the North tour, Evers noted that he is a friend of Menomonee Falls Superintendent Patricia Greco and they have talked about the changes that have occurred within the Menomonee Falls district. I just had to visit and see whats going on, Evers said. At the start of the day, Greco said that there has been a struggle in education due to splintered research. We re-label it, but its based on the same research base, Greco said. Greco said that while trying to build expectations for the system, an effort is being made to unlabel and stay focused on the purpose of the work, not the educational title, with typically a new title for grounded research. All schools in the state will now receive annual report cards from the state Department of Public Instruction, which will be based on set expectations of progress. We also know that if we dont prepare children well, they will be living in poverty without the ability to make that transition to higher education, Greco said. Greco said the parents want their children to belong, enjoy school, be successful in school and be able to advance to the next level. She said employers want employees that will work hard and be able to problem solve. The district answer to the expectation is through a four-step process called PDSA Plan, Do Study, Act. The steps involve: Plan a test on a small scale; Try it (the do) within a class setting; Study to determine the outcome; and Act on what was learned. Greco said the steps starts with study from a which is a plan is developed based on current data. Greco then showed a video summarizing activities within the classroom settings at various settings. The video showed I can statements in classrooms in which the standards are placed in language student can understand. Theyre setting the learning goal which actually sets the expectation for performance. Theyre posting it, theyre actually posting the results by benchmark assessment, which would be both quarterly and the learning cycle itself, which would be more the progress checks by the units, Greco said. Greco said that teachers are monitoring how students are progressing within 15-day cycles. She added that the mission is really impacting the classroom culture how they work, how they support one another. None of that is new. What you saw with the building teams and in the classroom is that theyre using the quality tools and actually applying it with the kids so that theyre engaging in the process, Greco said. Valley View Principal Tina Posnanski cited one example of the steps in action in a first grade classroom the I can used with subtracting numbers. After a post-test among one group, one student came up to the teacher said I didnt learn enough and asked for more worksheets over the weekend and to re-take the test. He was given the sheets and re-took the test. Thats the type of ownership that the students are taking in their learning, Posnanski said. During a visit at Riverside Elementary School, Principal Scott Walter said the biggest shift he has seen is from passive learning to active learning among students. Its been a complete paradigm shift of students taking ownership of their goals, Walter said. During a visit with three Riverside teachers, teacher Laura Morgan said students know what they are learning and why theyre learning. Morgan explained that the big goal is to improve their math scores, and small cycles are based on the one big goal. They are taking control of their own learning, she said. During a walk between classrooms Evers noted that much of the discussion at the state level involved new evaluation of districts and schools. How we do it here already fits into that, Evers said. Evers finished the Riverside portion of his tour with a visit to the kindergarten classroom of Angie Sardina. Sardina said that PDSA and kindergarten, those words do go together. She had students point to the mission statement which they then read: We will all try our best and worked as a team to meet all our goals and be the best we can be. Sardina then had a student show where the class was tracking its reading over the quarter. Evers and district staff then traveled to North. The North visit started with a presentation by eighth grade teacher Jeff Stollenwerk. Stollenwerk explained he is part of a group which started with the PDSA steps. The group took various concepts and work them into the PDSA process. Stollenwerk took the PDSA learning cycles and created units with two to three learning cycles per unit. Weve structured them around the state standards, Stollenwerk said. The classroom of Julie Poetzel was the next stop on the visit. During discussion, Poetzel directed her students to discuss

Should you observe Water Utility personnel working in your neighborhood, please limit your usage of the water for 30 to 45 minutes after the flushing has occurred, to insure the water is clear of discoloration before it is drawn into your water system. Should you find discoloration in your water system, please do not wash clothes until the water has cleared. Your help and cooperation in this program will benefit all of the water utility customers.

Open houses benefit buyers and sellers

(NAPSI)The next time youre thinking about buying or selling a house, you might want to open your mind to the benefits of an open house. What Buyers Should Do Buyers should make the most of each open house they visit and remember to keep an open mind. Here are some tips for visiting open houses: Check everything in the house including appliances, the size of closets, storage areas and the views from the windows. Walk around the property and check such things as the brick and mortar and siding. Drive around the neighborhood and get a feel for the area. Talk to the Realtor hosting the open house and pick his or her brain about the condition of the home, recent upgrades and the neighborhood. What Sellers Should Do As a seller, an open house is about putting your homes best foot forward. Here are some tips for a successful open house: Declutter and clean the house. Replace burnt-out lightbulbs and wash the windows. Mow the front lawn and clean the walkway. Fix maintenance issues such as dings in walls or leaky faucets. Two More Things To Consider 1. Last year, 45 percent of all buyers used an open house as a resource in their home search process, according to the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers. Open houses are a way for buyers to get an idea of what they can afford and what is available in their market. For sellers, its a chance to market the home and attract potential buyers. 2. Whether you are buying or selling, working with a Realtor is key. Some 89 percent of buyers purchase their homes through a real estate agent. Only 9 percent of sellers sold their home without assistance from an agent. Realtors have invaluable insights into what sells a home and are the most trusted resource for real estate information. They know what buyers value in their local markets. They can help sellers protect their investment and buyers build theirs.

Quotes about teaching

May 7 is National Teacher Appreciation Day. The following is a sampling of quotes on teachers and teaching, courtesy of the National Education Association Web site. "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops."Henry Brooks Adams "Teachers teach because they care. Teaching young people is what they do best. It requires long hours, patience, and care."Horace Mann "Compassionate teachers fill a void left by working parents who aren't able to devote enough attention to their children. Teachers don't just teach; they can be vital personalities who help young people to mature, to understand the world and to understand themselves. A good education consists of much more than useful facts and marketable skills."Charles Platt "The future of the world is in my classSERVING ALL OF WISCONSIN

room today, a future with the potential for good or bad... Several future presidents are learning from me today; so are the great writers of the next decades, and so are all the so-called ordinary people who will make the decisions in a democracy. I must never forget these same young people could be the thieves and murderers of the future. Only a teacher? Thank God I have a calling to the greatest profession of all! I must be vigilant every day, lest I lose one fragile opportunity to improve tomorrow." Ivan Welton Fitzwater "There's no word in the language I revere more than 'teacher.' My heart sings when a kid refers to me as his teacher, and it always has. I've honored myself and the entire family of man by becoming a teacher."Pat Conroy, Prince of Tides "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."

William Arthur Ward "The art of teaching is the art of assisting discovery."Mark Van Doren "If you plan for a year, plant a seed. If for ten years, plant a tree. If for a hundred years, teach the people. When you sow a seed once, you will reap a single harvest. When you teach the people, you will reap a hundred harvests."Kuan Chung "There is an old saying that the course of civilization is a race between catastrophe and education. In a democracy such as ours, we must make sure that education wins the race."John F. Kennedy "Better than a thousand days of diligent study is one day with a great teacher."Japanese proverb "The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards."Anatole France "Above all things I hope the education

of the common people will be attended to; convinced that on their good sense we may rely with most security for the preservation of a due degree of liberty."Thomas Jefferson "One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child."Carl Jung "Whoever first coined the phrase 'you're the wind beneath my wings' most assuredly was reflecting on the sublime influence of a very special teacher."Frank Trujillo "In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less." Sensenbrenner reiterates objections to Affordable Care Act

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR While the Affordable Care Act will take effect in 2014, Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner favors repealing it. Yes, I do support the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, Sensenbrenner said during a Town Hall meeting at the Menomonee Falls Village Hall April 20. The cost of the Affordable Care Act seems to be going up exponentially on how much is going to be added to the deficit. The legislation dubbed Obamacare by its critics provides for universal health care coverage. It was approved in December 2009. Lynn Carey of Germantown asked Sensenbrenner about the Affordable Care Act and if Sensenbrenner supported a budget proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan (RJanesville). Carey noted that the Ryan budget called for repealing the Affordable Care Act. I think thats been tried 37 times, she said. Carey asked if Sensenbrenner would be looking at any comprise other than repeal. Sensenbrenner replied that we have a spending problem in this country citing increases in the national debt. What were doing is were spending money on ourselves and sending the bill to our children and grandchildren to pay, plus interest, Sensenbrenner said. Thats not good economics and I will say thats not moral either. Sensenbrenner said entitlement programs account for 60 percent of federal expenditures. Weve got to grow up, weve got to talk about how we (deal) with entitlement programs and we have to do it sooner rather than later because if the wolf is at the door theyre going to be a lot more people hurt in lot worse ways than if we do that with some time before their a debt crisis and an economic collapse, Sensenbrenner said. Sensenbrenner said the Ryan budget balances the budget without a tax increase in 10 years. Carey asked Sensenbrenner if you are married to the Ryan budget or if he would be looking to another option. Sensenbrenner replied he supports the Ryan budget. In other items raised during the meeting: A resident asked what is being done to reduce the cost and thwart the abuse of government programs in healthcare. Sensenbrenner said that issues surrounding abuse of government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid is an enforcement issue. Sensenbrenner cited recent cases of individuals who have been charged with fraud. There ought to be more of that because the more enforcement there is the greater the deterrent there is (which) curtails the temptation to do more of that, Sensenbrenner said. Jane Kyle of Colgate took issue with provisions of the state budget that freezes state funding for public school while expanding vouchers for private schools. What are we going to do to protect public education in Wisconsin? Kyle asked. Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) replied that the voucher program was started under Gov. Tommy Thompson to give low income parents in Milwaukee options for sending their children to other schools. She noted that Head Start and the GI Bill offered recipients options for education Our constitutional responsibility is to give every child the best education possible, and thats what were doing in Wisconsin, Darling said.

Falls selects new boys basketball, girls cross country coaches

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR Menomonee Falls High School filled two head coaching vacancies within 24 hours last week. On April 30, Ben Farley, who has been an assistant for the Brookfield East boys basketball team the past 10 seasons, was named varsity boys basketball coach. "Im extremely grateful and feel truly blessed for the opportunity to lead the basketball program at Menomonee Falls High School. Our student-athletes will exemplify our three principles: tough, strong, together," Farley said in a statement issued by the district. "We will pride ourselves and work every day in building our identity of being the hardest-working team in the Greater Metro Conference," said Farley. Menomonee Falls received 42 applications for the post, which opened following the resignation of Dan Leffel last month. "Farley is a coach who stood out among the 42 applicants. He is a gym rat who will teach basketball skills, hard work, and determination to each young man in our program. This hire is big to help move our program toward success in and out of the classroom," Menomonee Falls Athletic Director Ryan Anderson said in a statement. In his introductory statement, Farley took the initiative in seeking support for the program. "I ask for all our stakeholders support of our student-athletes and our basketball program. Lets make every Tuesday and Friday night special, pack the gym for all our home games and make Menomonee Falls a very special place to play. The weather is just starting to get nice, but I cant wait for winter to get here!" he said Farley is in the process of putting together his coaching staff, with the deadline for potential applicants to submit their names being May 13. The next day, David Gruber was selected as the new girls track coach. Gruber had been an assistant coach for the boys team for two years. He also coached cross country at the middle school level. "Im honored to be selected as the next girls head cross country coach. I look to build upon the talent that we currently have and increase participation numbers for the sport," said Gruber. He then added: "I hope to instill the passion of running in the girls that are committed to the sport. I look forward to seeing the friends, family members, and supporters of Menomonee Falls athletics at our meets this fall." Gruber replaces Paul Schramka, who resigned at the end of last season. "I have worked with Dave for many years at the middle school level and I know that he is passionate about running and the students of Menomonee Falls, " Anderson said in a statement. "He impressed the selection committee with his vision as well as his desire and dedication to make Menomonee Falls a top-tier cross country program."

The history of National Police Week

The following information on National Police Week was taken from the National Police Week Web site. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year. The National Peace Officers' Memorial Service, which is sponsored by the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, is one in a series of events which includes the Candlelight Vigil, which is sponsored by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) and seminars sponsored by Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) National Police Week draws in between 25,000 to 40,000 attendees. The attendees come from departments throughout the United States as well as from agencies throughout the world. This provides a unique opportunity to meet others that share a common brotherhood. In that spirit, the Fraternal Order of Police DC Lodge #1 sponsors receptions each afternoon and evening during Police Week. These events are open to all law enforcement personnel and are an experience unlike any other.

Scout upgrades Norths school store for Eagle Scout project

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN STAFF WRITER
When Menomonee Falls resident Alex Friesenhahn set out to earn his Eagle Scout rankthe highest honor awarded by the Boys Scouts of Americahe was inspired by a need close to home. The 15-year-old Menomonee Falls High School freshman, who is an instructor with Scout Troop 109 through Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, decided it was time for the North Junior High Schools school store to receive an upgrade and makeover. Not much more than a little cart of supplies when Alex helped with it as an eighth grader, the store had a lot of room for improvement, the Scout said. When I worked there, stuff was getting stolen or falling off, so I got the idea to build a better store, he said. Jim Nitz, a business education teacher at the middle school, said it was about a year ago when his former student approached him with the remodeling idea. Alex asked if this was something he could do and I said, yeah, definitely, recalled Nitz. With agreement from the teacher, Alex planned and developed a school store kiosk with increased storage space, a locking mechanism for security and better visibility. And when everything was finished, Alex essentially tripled the size of the store. He made it bigger and better, Nitz said. The school storewhich allows students to purchase supplies at affordable ratesis an important part of the school environment, said Nitz, and all proceeds from items sold are donated to student-selected charities, including HAAS, The American Red Cross, United Way and the March of Dimes. There were many steps involved in bringing the project to fruition, Alex explained. It took about a month to get all the signatures to start the project and start fund raising, Alex said of the $233 project that involved a lot of hands-on construction. We had volunteers, such as friends and other Scouts, to help. A ceremony to celebrate the culmination of nearly a years worth of work was held in March as the new store was unveiled and a decade of Scouting brought Alex into the top ranking. The Scout, who lives with parents Lyle and Beckie and 12-year-old brother Adam, began as a Tiger Cub in first grade and never looked back. I got into it because my dad is an Eagle Scout, he said. I am super involved. I have never been the Scout who stopped going to meetings and outings for months at a time. The teen said he has many fond memo-

ries gathered during a decade of Scouting. I think the best experiences Ive had were during outings I go on with my friends, he said. The outings teach me outdoorsman skills and I also have a lot of fun. While there has been plenty of fun along the way, Alexs Scouting experience has been just as much about honor and duty. As a leader, Alex took the position of Senior Patrol Leader, top office in his scout troop. In this capacity, he was responsible for the safety and organization of 55 Boy Scouts for a six-month term. Alexwhose other interests include hunting, photography and cinematographyis an also active member of the Future Business Leaders of America and participates in the high school track and field program. However, it is Scouting that defines him, and Alexs father said his son was more than happy to take on a project that currently serves no personal benefit to him. Even though Alex no longer attends North Middle School, he continues to make his mark through this project, said Lyle. This is just the kind of person Alex is, Nitz seconded. Alex is a wonderful kid, the teacher said. He is a very good communicator, and he did a great job with all aspects of the project, from the fundraising to the actual building. He just took the initiative and ran with it. Set to complete his Eagle Scout rank requirements by the end of the school year, Alex plans to stay involved in the organization. I hope to be able to stay in Scouts so that I may be able to help new Scouts who come into the troop, he said. I have just joined the new Venture Crew 109 so I will be able to continue scouting until I'm 21. When I am no longer a Scout, I will become a leader in both Troop 109 and Venture Crew 109.

action steps to improve their performance. Its not just study harder, its how to study harder. Its not fix a car, we replace the tires, we replace the battery, we fix the locks, she explained. The students then summarized action steps. Responses included writing down vocabulary words and doing chapter question as they are discussed. Poetzel then had students summarize one action step that will work for each individual student for their personal plan. Poetzel explained that students have really gotten to take control and they track all their own data and every time they do data they reflect on it. Evers then visited teacher Denise Moen, who explained the learning cycles through the PDSA process. Moen explained that students create their own mission statements while Moen sets the goal that either 100 percent of students will meet or exceed their math target growth score. After we do that, I say how are going to make this work? You have tell me what me the teacher has to do what you the learner has to do, Moen said. That data is posted, and approaches change after learning cycles, she said. Evers completed his visit with a presentation by teacher Kristin Stein, who is in her 20th year teaching in the district but the first teaching sixth grade. Stein said student involvement in the process has been a major part of the PDSA approach. The kids are telling us what they like, whats working for them, whats not working for them. Whats theyre learning, what theyre doing for them has been the biggest growth, Stein said. After the North tour, Evers noted the changes he saw taking place in the classroom. Not only are the changes made collectively with students involved in it, I think thats really important but also the fact that the students are now more fully engaged in their learning, its just tremendous work. You can see how its changed the culture of this building, Evers said.
