POESIA

GASOLINA
Poemas sobre Edward Hopper
na superfície
da poltrona, a passageira
alheia,
à distância
do seu
próprio silêncio.
GASOLINA

a vegetação
é uma
linha sinuosa
do horizonte,
de ninguém.

derrete
um chocolate, batido

No aquário nada,
Três clientes perdidos,
e apenas a luz
espalhada na esquina.
The painting reveals three customers lost in their own private thoughts. The anonymous and uncommunicative night
owls seem as remote from the viewer as they are from one another.
A tensão entre o homem e a mulher.
Like most of his fellow Am ericans, Hopper was an avid moviegoer, and by the late 1930s
both movies them selves and cinem atic effects occasionally made their way into his
paintings. The setting for this image of an attractive usherette, absorbed in her own
thoughts, was based primaril y on the gaudy interior of the Palace Theater in Times
Square. The structure of the composition may also owe a debt to the movies, for its
spatial arrangem ent—a near view on the right next to deep space on the left—echoes a
montage effect in film, juxtaposing a close-up and a shot into deep space to establish an
association bet ween the two.

“Room in New York” (1932) peers in at a couple in their living room through the open
window of a city apartment. The pair are separated by space both physical and
psychological, each preoccupied. Hopper conveys a palpable disquiet by the angle of
the woman’s starkly lit shoulder as she turns away from her companion to plunk a
solitary note on a piano.

Isolada do mundo
Sob o reflexo das lâmpadas

Só um sol à janela

Para o exterior
Domingo de manhã
ninguém no sol/nas janelas sem caras
bater na calçada,
abrir na barbearia
um sorriso, um rosto
no sol sólido,
toda a rua
esquecerá
uma solidão.
The deep serenity of this painting must have been what led this city child to write a sort
of urban pastoral.

These fashionable women are dining at a modest Chinese restaurant not unlike one the
Hoppers frequented. Characteristically, Hopper depicts a moment before or after the main
event—here, the meal—takes place. Also typical is the isolation and am biguous
relationship between the figures: it is not clear whether the dining companions are even
looking at or conversing with one another.
Although this is clearl y a figurative work, Hopper flirts with abstraction. The wom en are
surrounded by a balance of geometric forms: the angular table between them, the layers
of rectangles that animate the foreground window, and the blue and yellow patches visible
through the far window that suggest shafts of light on the adjacent building.
