We have received requests from tutors to add more information to the existing Aromatherapy Syllabus to ensure the correct breadth and depth of information is being taught to prepare learners for the theory examination. The aromatherapy syllabus is currently being rewritten but during this interim period use the attached document. It will be known as the Temporary Existing Syllabus. The headings in black text have not been changed, however, the text in italic under these headings is the additional information. Please exchange these pages with those in the front of your existing syllabus. The Case Studies and Examination information remains unchanged.

MINIMUM TRAINING REQUIREMENTS 150 Hours


This must include a minimum of 100 hours contact, 50% of which must be spent working within a commercial salon/clinic environment and 50 hours of additional study.

EXAMINATIONS: THEORY PRACTICAL EXAM FEE


45 minutes multiple choice paper. 1 hours. Plus 16 Case Studies to be presented to the examiner. To be issued annually by CIBTAC

This course could be covered over a flexible time basis, enabling many part time learners to qualify who would not be able to attend school/college on a full time basis.

CASE STUDIES
The learner must complete four case studies, comprising four treatments for each client, totalling sixteen treatments. The case studies must include a range of conditions, ages and lifestyles. Case studies are not to be carried out on other learners within the group. Please refer to the Introduction to Case Studies Booklet and the individual Aromatherapy Booklet for tutor and student guidelines; this can be obtained from the CIBTAC office.

AROMATHERAPY TREATMENT PRACTICAL EXAMINATION Time allowed 1 hours guide for schools/examiners
1. Detailed Consultation A consultation card must be completed by the candidates with the client at the start of the examination. A detailed record should be made of the clients medical history, present medications being taken, contra-indications apparent and reasons for treatment. All clients to be allocated by examiner. 2. Preparation of Working Area The candidate is responsible for ensuring that the working area is satisfactorily prepared prior to the treatment being undertaken. 3. Preparation and Care of the Client The candidate is responsible for the suitable preparation of the client prior to the treatment being undertaken. 4. Selection of Essential Oils Candidates will be asked about their choice of carrier and essential oils and % dilution during oral questioning and alternatives to that choice. 5. Treatment Movements The examiner will be looking at the candidates posture together with rhythm and flow of movements. 6. Aftercare and Advice The candidate must demonstrate to the client suitable aftercare following the treatment as well as advising on the follow up treatment which could be of benefit to the client. This should also be recorded on the clients card. 7. Hygiene The candidate must demonstrate high standards of hygiene before, during and after treatment to negate the possibility of cross infection. 8. Personal Appearance and Deportment The candidate must present a totally professional image to the client and wear suitable clothes to meet this criterion. 9. Oral Questions The examiner will ask the candidates oral questions relative to the treatment, selection of oils, purpose of various movements and overall summery of the treatment carried out. 10. Case Studies Must be graded by the tutor and be available to the examiner on arrival. These will be verified by the examiner after the examination. Accommodation must be available for up to 2 hours.

Clients signature must be on all consultation sheets. 4. All the enclosed forms should be completed for each case study and each treatment must be recorded. 5. If the treatment is being altered at all, please explain and justify this. 6. Additional information can be included in the homecare advice. 7. All treatments to be validated by the tutor. 8. Case studies to be graded by course tutor following CIBTAC % grading guidelines i.e. 85-100% Excellent, 75-84% Good, 60-74% Satisfactory.

It is recommended that no more than 4 essential oils be used in a treatment and a full working knowledge of top notes, middle notes and base notes is demonstrated in the blend. A separate facial oil may be required and should include the most suitable carrier oil for the clients skin type.
