It is impossible to tell the story of Split without mentioning Diocletian. Diocletian (Lat. Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletanus) was a Roman Emperor born in Dalmatia, who at the end of his term, around 300 BC, built a magnificent palace and stayed there since he had abdicated the Roman throne. The palace was built five miles southwest of the Salone, the former capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The architects name remains unknown, and it is assumed that the master builders were brought from the East, although it is quite likely that most of the workers were of local origin. The remains of the palace now form the historic centre of Split, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

The shape of the palace resembles a castrum (military camp), with a tower on the walls of the palace, following the tradition of military architecture. In its northern part, the palace has housed the servants houses, warehouses and houses for similar purposes, while the southern, more luxurious part of the palace was reserved for members of the imperial family. Diocletians death did not mean the cessation of life and the Palace: on the contrary, the fall of Salona introduced a new, organized city life. The Middle Ages, between the 12th and 14 century bring urban development, when many medieval houses were built within the former Roman buildings, and spread to the streets and porches. From the seventh century the Palace is known as the city of Split. The central square of the palace, the Peristyle, with the Romanesque bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Domnius made Split famous all over the world. Today, the city of Split is the second largest city in Croatia, and the centre of Split-Dalmatia County. The days of Diocletian are long gone, but his palace still shines. But aside from the Palace, Split prouds itself with its numerous natural beauties, with the park-forest Marjan known as the green lungs of the city. Marjan is a hill, peninsula and Park-forest located in the western part of the Split peninsula, just a few minutes away from the city centre. Along with a view from the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Domnius, the Marjan lookout provides the best view of this unique city. Due to its geographical position and configuration the Marjan Peninsula boasts in diverse plant species. Marjan is a popular recreational destination of Split citizens and their guests, offering numerous amenities - jogging, cycling, tennis courts, nature gymnastics, zoo and a number of amazing bays. This unique natural monument is also home to six churches built in different historical periods such as the Middle Ages, Gothic, Romanesque and Renaissance.
