SECTION III ______________________________________________________ 1. Assertion : It requires infinite time for all the atoms in a radioactive sample to decay, whatever be the value of its half life period. Reason : The nature of decay of all radioactive atoms is exponential. Assertion : Liquid helium is stored in containers fitted with thick super insulation consisting of a large number of layers of very thin aluminized Mylar sheets. Reason : If more layers are added in series between two reservoirs, thermal resistance of the composite system is sum of the individual layers. Assertion : Doppler Effect holds also for electromagnetic waves including microwaves, radio waves and visible light. Reason : As speed of light is independent of relative motion between source and observer, the formulae for Dopper effect are different from that of sound. Assertion : The optical path between two points can never be less than the geometrical path between the points in refracting medium. Reason : The refractive index of a medium can never be less than one.

______________________________________________________ SECTION IV ______________________________________________________ Paragraph Two skaters, each a mass 50 kg, approach each other along parallel paths separated by 3.0m. They have equal and opposite velocities of 10m/s. The first skates carries a long, light pole of length 3m and the second skates grabs the free end of the pole as they pass along side. Assume that the ice is frictionless. 1. The motion of the skaters just after the second skater grabs the free end of the pole is correctly given by the statement :
