(Buddhist Studies)
Objectives 1. The program aims to provide graduate students a profound knowledge of Buddhism and, particularly, Essential teachings of the Buddha. 2. The program aims to produce efficient scholars and lecturers in Buddhist Studies, who, in the future, can yield benefits of qualified work to the public. 3. The program aims to enable graduate students to use the knowledge of Buddhism And Buddhist methodology to improve their lives and society. Admission Applicants must have earned a Bachelors degree and be able to pass the process of Screening which consists of a written examination and an interview. The date of application is Announced yearly by the University. Academic System 1. The program operates on the dual semesters basis. 2. Graduate students need to complete course work and a thesis. 3. Course work consists of 15 credits of required course, with a required minimum G.P.A. of 3.00, and 18 credits of elective courses. 4. The thesis consists of 12 credits with a grade of S (Satisfactory) or U (Unsatisfactory). 5. Audit students and other types of students can register for courses in the program with permission of the graduate Committee. 6. Students who have not yet studied the research methodology in their undergraduate Program should pass the course BU.501 (Research Methodology in Buddhist Studies) with a grade P. Degree Requirements The Degree of Master ct Arts (Buddhist Studies) will be awardec to graduate students who have fulfilled the following conditions: 1. having completed all courses required in the curriculum and earned the G.P.A. of not less than 3.00. 2. having received P in the English language examination. 3. having received Sin the thesis.

BU501 Research Methodology in Buddhist Studies A study of research methodology and procedure especially in Buddhist Studies. 3 credits

BU603 Buddhist Monasticism 3 credits A study of the meaning and importance of the Thai monastic institution in historical contexts. BU610 History of Buddhism 3 credits A study of the origin and development of Buddhism in India from the time of the Buddha to the spread of Buddhism to Asia and the West. BU613 Buddhism in Thailand A study of the beginning and development of Buddhism in Thailand until the present time. 3 credits

BU614 Buddhism in China 3 credits A study of the beginning and development of Buddhism in China and its impact on the Chinese way of life. BU615 Buddhism in Japan 3 credits A study of the beginning and development of Buddhism in Japan and its impact on the Japanese way of life.

BU623 Sri Lankan Buddhism and its Influence on Southeast Asia 3 credits A study of the beginning and development of Buddhism in Sri Lankan and its impact on Singhalese nationalism, Buddhist art, with reference to other Southeast Asian countries. BU624 Tibetan Buddhism 3 credits A study of the beginning and development of Tibetan Buddhism , including its impact on the Buddhist way of life. BU630 Tripitaka and Commentaries 3 credits A study of the origin, the significance, and the content of the Vinaya, the Sutra, and the Abhidharma, as well as the Buddhist commentaries. BU631 Mahayana Sutras A study of the doctrine of Mahayana Buddhism from major Mahayana texts. 3 credits

BU640 Theravada Buddhism 3 credits A study of principle concepts and practices in Theravada Buddhism, e.g., the Law of Karma and the Threefold Training, which influence the Buddhist way of life. BU641 Mahayana Buddhism 3 credits A study of principal concepts and practices in Mahayana Buddhism in India and in the Far East, including their influence on other Buddhist concepts and practices. BU643 Buddhist Philosophy 3 credits A philosophical study of the meaning and importance of Buddhist concepts. Teachings, and practices, as well as their impact on the concept of emancipation. BU650 Buddhist Logic A study of Buddhist reasoning according to various Buddhist texts. 3 credits
