BEYOND THE NUTS AND BOLTS: UFOS AS THE TECHNOLOGY OF EXTRADIMENSIONAL ALIENS
By Dean R. DeHarpporte, B.S.

Abstract: The early assumption that UFOs were machines that operate within the laws of physics as we understand them has become untenable in view of well documented evidence of their paranormal behavior, deriving from their origin in a 5- dimensional, universal reality. The purpose of UFO visitations may be to warn us of ecological disaster, to enlighten us, or something more profound. The bizarre method of delivering these messages involving enigmatic, outrageous phenomena - is meant to jar us out of the straightjacket of rationality we are in and force us to embrace the radical openness of mind necessary to advance beyond the increasingly obsolete scientific paradigm of pure reason.

Introduction
UFOs are a perfect example of Arthur C. Clarks famous remark: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. UFOs are directly associated with several types of paranormal phenomena. From the perspective of the physics of our 4dimensional (including time) consciousness, UFOs accelerate at speeds that would be immediately fatal to any terrestrial lifeform; they can be seen by some but not by others; and some stop on a dime and then streak away at fantastic speeds. The list of deep violations of our laws of physics is almost endless. Most profound are the audacious abductions associated with some UFO encounters. Yet, research suggests that they do not behave magically; rather, emerging theory suggests that their behavior is consistent with the paraphysics of a 5-dimensional, alternative reality. (Beichler, 2008). A 1973 1980 scientific study of UFOs called Project Identification, designed by Dr. Harley Rutledge and associates, observed UFO events using sophisticated photography. Numerous UFOs were sighted but reliable photography proved impossible because they disappeared when cameras were aimed at them and then reappeared after the cameras were deactivated. At other times even when they were photographed UFOs would not appear on the film. Rutledge concluded: Todays scientific paradigms are based on the idea of controlled experimentation with the basic assumption that humans are in control, which simply is not the case (Scott, 2011, 7). This is just one example of the paranormal nature of UFOs in the sense that UFOs do not conform to our normal physics. Ufologists have long been aware of these paranormal issues but during the early years of UFO investigations (beginning in the late 1940s) they were given little attention or explained away because they just didnt fit the entrenched paradigm of pure materialism. UFOs were assumed to be machines, which to early researchers meant they were comprised of nuts and bolts, just as our most advanced technological equipment of the time was. The UFO phenomena itself was sufficiently mind-boggling; coupling it with incredible accelerations, dramatic electromagnetic abnormalities (Romanek, 2009, 19), ability to render

human weapons useless (Wikipedia, Iran, 2011) and, ultimately, reports of audacious abductions, was simply too much for the early researchers to handle. However, in the last 30 years or so, as instances of UFO gross violations of physics as we know it proliferated including solidly documented radar cases simultaneously seen by multiple witnesses (Wikipedia, Stephenville, 2011) - efforts to explain UFOs in the context of the vast and baffling domain of paranormal phenomena has become the leading explanatory paradigm for ufologists, though some dinosaurs still cling to the nuts and bolts approach. But the science of our culture has not even acknowledged the reality of paranormal phenomena, much less the existence of UFOs. This massive resistance of science to such a well documented challenge to its legitimacy is hardly surprising. There is simply no place for UFOs, particularly in the context of paranormal phenomena in our culture, which has benefited so much from the nuts and bolts of rationality. A profoundly drastic change in our science is imperative, and investigation is leading us to conclude that the UFOs themselves may be however ineffably - showing us the way. Sightings of UFOs occur much more frequently than the stunted press coverage of this extremely newsworthy issue would indicate; almost everyone has either sighted a UFO of some kind or knows someone who has. There are some 950 trained and tested Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) Certified Field Investigators based mostly in the U.S. who investigate 1000+ UFO sightings monthly that are reported to MUFONs website, which contains a computer database of > 40,000 cases dating back to 1950. Some 5-10% of these cases are rich enough in data and witness reliability to conclude that a truly unidentifiable object was sighted. Other investigative organizations, such as the UFO Reporting Center, take a similar approach and have documented thousands of additional unknowns. Polls indicate that less than 10% of all sightings are reported to MUFON or other investigating organizations (MUFON FAQs, 2011). It is the opinion of this investigator, backed by many dedicated researchers and prominent people, that there is sufficient evidence to conclude with near certainty that unexplained flying objects are appearing in our world. This paper first reviews a small portion of the opinion and evidence backing UFO reality. Then the profound questions of what these objects are, why they are here, and how they may even save us from ourselves are addressed.

Eminent Backers of UFO Reality

RAF Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding said in 1954 Of course the flying saucers are real and they are interplanetary. The cumulative evidence for the reality of UFOs is overwhelming and I accept the fact of their existence. (Dowding, 2011) Mikhail Gorbachev said in 1990, "The phenomenon of UFOs does exist, and it must be treated seriously" (Gorbachev, 1990). Edgar Mitchell, astronaut and doctor of engineering science, the sixth man to walk on the moon, said in 2004, "I happen to have been privileged enough to be in on the fact that we've been visited on this planet, and the UFO phenomenon is real; now the question is where they come from" (Mitchell, 2008).

Scientific Studies of UFOs

In 1998, Dr. Peter Sturrock, Emeritus Professor of physics at Stanford, gathered a team of 14 physicists to study UFOs. They concluded: The UFO problem is not simple with a single answer Studies should concentrate on cases with physical evidence Scientists might learn by studying observations

Regular contact between the UFO community and physical scientists could be productive The medical community should be made aware of potential UFO health risks (Sturrock, 1999). Retired officers of the French Air Force Institute of Advanced Studies for National Defense wrote a 99-page report that concludes that the extraterrestrial hypothesis is most likely to explain UFOs. It cites numerous well-researched sightings and methodically refutes mundane explanations (COMETA, 1999).

The UFO Evidence

The UFO evidence is an embarrassment of riches. Many thousands of UFO sightings are documented by: Radar records - Hundreds, many with recorded data (UFO Evidence, 2011). Ground Traces: UFOs leaving landing marks, residue, radiation or damaged/burned vegetation, 4900 cases as of April 2011 (Phillips, 2011). Metal debris, including implants, consisting of unknown isotopes and other striking anomalies (Leir, 1998). Interference with function of car and aircraft engines and electronics (UFO Evidence, 2011). Photographs, most fuzzy but some unmistakably alien hundreds, many from the predigital era (ibid). Eye witnesses - Thousands by police, military, engineers, even presidents (ibid) Bodily harm, severe mental trauma more than 100 well documented cases (ibid).

Belgium UFO Wave

The most credible UFO sightings involve those detected by radar and seen at the same time by ground observers. Hundreds of such cases have been documented (ibid). One of these was the Belgian flying triangle sighting. Fig. 1 is a photo of a UFO low in the sky taken over Glons, Belgium, 1990, showing a flying triangle, which is typical of many UFO sightings. The object was seen in the sky, tracked on radar and photographed by fighter pilots. Two military radars confirmed the sightings, prompting the scrambling of two F16 jets. On six occasions the pilots established lock-on radar contact with the UFOs. Targets varied in speed between 150 and 1010 knots and altitude changed extremely rapidly (Wikipedia, Belgian, 2011). Over 1989-91, these objects were sighted by no fewer than 13,500 people on the ground - 2,600 of whom, including judges and police, filed written statements describing in detail what they had seen (Sunday Express, 1995). Unlike the U.S. military when confronted with similar events, the Belgian Air Force conducted a rigorous investigation and issued a formal report that was unable to explain the origin of the craft.. The U.S. government firmly denied they were testing innovative aircraft over Belgium. (Wikipedia, Belgium, 2011). UFO shapes and sizes are very diverse, but the flying triangle is the shape most frequently described shape among credible UFO accounts, including a very convincing case the author personally investigated involving onsite interviews of two witnesses in Minnesota in 2002. Several UFOs were seen very near the White House by Federal Aviation Agency personnel, the pilots of both military and commercial plane and the general public on two consecutive weekends in July 1952. These UFOs were exceptionally well documented,

not only photographically but in the form of radar images from three ground based radars simultaneously, as well as the radar of two military planes that were scrambled to intercept them. The UFOs vanished as the aircraft approached and then reappeared after they left. Anomalous UFO Photos For decades, there have been reports of UFOs poorly documented and possibly artifacts caused by camera reflections or airborne debris - preceding or accompanying the formation of crop circles. However, in Holland, where less complex crop circles than those that form in England have been mysteriously appearing for at least 17 years, crop circle researcher Nancy Talbott has documented not only the anomalous formation of crop circles but numerous photos taken over crop circle fields by young Dutch medium Robbert van den Broeke (henceforth referred to as Robbert), upon whose camera UFO images anomalously appear even though they are not visible in the field to the eye. Talbott has been visiting Robbert for 13 years, staying for several weeks each summer at his home with his family. This familiarity has allowed her to clearly observe that Robbert, a man with relatively little formal education and who did not even own a computer until 2006, does not engage in production or alteration of any of these photos. Many of the wide variety of UFO images, which regularly appear in photographs taken by Robbert with his own camera have also appeared not only on Talbott's camera but, she writes, on multiple cameras belonging to many different witnesses, including that of Dr. William Roll, a renowned American parapsychologist. In these instances the owners of the various cameras, as well as Talbott, watch Robbert as he takes the photographs -- and none of these witnesses have ever seen any evidence of confabulation by Robbert. Talbott reports All of the "UFO" images have been taken with digital cameras, though before 2004 Robbert used a film camera to take other anomalous photos (but not UFO images). Talbott states that when Robbert takes anomalous photos with my camera, [it] is kept in my possession until I hand it to [him] (Talbott, 2009, part 1). At some point it becomes painfully redundant to continue to assert what is obvious to all of us who have witnessed these events: something none of us understands is occurring -- and it has nothing to do with computers or fakery (Talbott, 2010, part 4). Talbott reports that the 2009 crop formations around the village of Hoeven in southern Holland were notable .because of the phenomenal photos of UFOs taken by Robbert while visiting the circles". Around 1:30 AM, July 9, 2009, in the vicinity of Standdaarbuiten, Holland she and Robbert walked down the tram-lines into [one of] the circles when Robbert began to feel the presence of energy, and I handed him my Pentax Optio-33WR digital camera, set (as always) in auto mode. Robbert snapped several photos, one after the other. Immediately, an anomalous light was visible on the photos," although neither Robbert nor Nancy saw it visually in the field. Among the photos

Robbert snapped on that occasion was the UFO silhouette taken in darkness, shown in Figure 2. Figure 3 shows a partially transparent "UFO" image that appeared on a twilight photo as it was taken about a month later near Zavenbergen, again taken with her camera, over a crop circle about three weeks after it had formed in that field. Neither "UFO" image was visible to either Robbert or Nancy before, after, or at the time the photos were taken. (Talbott, 2009, part 4). The author has known Ms. Talbott for several years and has complete confidence in her integrity.

Implants
When skeptics deny the presence of alien visitations they are fond of saying that no physical evidence has ever been found. This is belied by findings of implants removed from people who claim to have been abducted during UFO encounters. The credibility of these encounters is bolstered by the highly anomalous characteristics of the implants. Few people beyond the field of ufology are aware that Doctor Roger Leir, a practicing podiatrist, has removed and intensively studied implants from people who reported having been abducted by UFOs. All of the operations were recorded on camera. Leirs book, The Aliens and the Scalpel: Scientific Proof of Extraterrestrial Implants in Humans, describes in detail eight such removals from eight different people, and eight more over the past decade are described on his website. All of the implant removals were witnessed by other doctors, filmed by Dr. Leirs team, and analyzed at Los Alamos National Laboratories and New Mexico Technical College. (Leir, 1998, p 162 - 171). The implants are either metallic or non-metallic. The metallic objects are covered by dark, grey, shiny membranes - consisting of protein coagulum, hemosiderin, and keratin that could not be opened with a surgical blade. These substances are naturally occurring in the body, but investigation has shown no record in the medical literature of this unique combination. If this membrane covering the implants could be manufactured it could be used to enclose transplant organs, obviating the need for anti-rejection drugs. Remarkably, laboratory investigations of the soft tissues covering the metallic objects revealed conglomerations of nerve cells and a total lack of inflammation. The non-metallic objects were small, BB-sized, greyish-white, round balls consisting of clusters of nerve cells in the underlying soft tissue. A gauss meter held over the skin of one abductee under which the implant was lodged, indicated a strong electromagnetic field. Another person who had a non-metallic implant removed had a signed affidavit from a neighbor who observed a UFO hovering over her house during the night she claimed to have been abducted (Leir, 1998).

The covering around one non-metallic implant consisted partially of proprioceptor nerve tissue, the type of tissue that has been found to convert bioenergy into electrical output that could be used to drive servomotors in artificial limbs. Perhaps most remarkably, an implant was scanned with a simple Gaussmeter while still in the abductees body, which indicated a 6 milligauss reading, far above background. A pulse reading was also detected, which showed there was a signal being generated and one being received by the object (MUFON, 2001, 194). Dr. Leir has removed many foreign objects from peoples feet and toes - and, always, in his experience, the body tries to reject them - which invariably causes inflammation, except when they were reported to be implants. The lack of inflammation made a strong impression on Dr. Leir, and was never explained. (Leir, 1998). Dr. Leir has always struggled with funding for the sophisticated analyses required. Characteristically, science is reluctant to even consider publishing Leirs work.

Abductions
Physicist James Beichler cites an account of a man reporting a UFO abduction who like so many abductees, developed an acute ecological consciousness and experienced a profound spiritual opening. This description is very familiar to those researching NDEs. In fact Beichler wrote, the whole episode could have been mistaken as an episode of an NDE (Beichler, 2008, 313). The findings of Professor Kenneth Rings book, The Omega Project, imply a reality separate and profoundly different from our own. Ring compared individuals who reported near-death experiences (NDEs) with those who encountered UFOs and described being abducted by them into what appears to be a similar alternative reality (Ring, 1992, 280). The astonishing similarities reported by Ring among the psychological orientation, perceptions, and aftereffects of those who experienced UFO abductions and others undergoing NDEs imply that both groups were exposed to realms having very similar influences and stimuli during their extraordinary encounters (Ring, 1992). According to MUFON abduction researcher Craig Lang, only about 40% of the information from abductees is derived through hypnosis. Although research indicates that abductees are only rarely actually moved to a waiting UFO, most abductees perceive that they were in some sense transported to a different location (Lang, 2010), a perception not usually shared by NDEers who suddenly find themselves in an exotic realm. Broadly similar accounts of an alternative reality, though with some marked differences, are reported by people who have taken DMT under controlled laboratory conditions (Strassman, 2001) and by investigators of shamans who ingest ayahuasca (Hancock, 2007).

An Alternative Reality
The paranormal appearance of UFO images on photos of another paranormal phenomena (crop circle fields), the removal of implants from persons who report being abducted by UFOs, and the similarity between the experiences and psychological characteristics of abductees and NDEers imply the existence of a domain apart from our familiar 4-dimensional world. Mathematicians generally agree that our universe is very likely comprised of more dimensions, at least five and possibly as many as eleven. A theory of what this 5-dimensional reality may be is provided by Beichlers SOFT model, which resumes where Darwin left off. Darwin tells us that after Life originated, Mind evolved to govern Life's functions. Beichler argues that the human Mind is now evolving into the 5dimensional Consciousness realm that parapsychological research is increasingly pointing toward. Consciousness pervades the entire universe and is the universal reality - primarily spiritual rather than physical - that subsumes the material, 4-dimensional Life/Mind realm (Beichler, 2008, 240-246). Paul Devereux, quoted by Ring, believes we need to start

thinking of consciousness as a field effect, an all-pervading element in the universe (Ring, 1992, 217). It is not subject to the limitations of time and space of our Life/Mind realm and its projections into our reality are the source of what we perceive to be paranormal phenomena. As Terrence McKenna put it We are not primarily biological[but] hyperspacial objects of some sort [residing in a higher dimension] which cast a shadow into [4-dimensional] matter. This shadow is our physical organism (McKenna, 1987). Ring agrees: We are spiritual beings who are gradually becoming aware of our spiritual essence (Ring, 1992, 236).

UFOs as the Technology of Extradimensional Aliens

All objects projecting from a 5-dimensional realm into our own 4-dimensional reality would appear to behave capriciously and contradictory to our laws of physics but would be consistent with the paraphysics of the Consciousness realm. Of course, among the objects I am hypothesizing are UFOs. Others could be cryptoids, apparitions and diverse other phenomena that we classify as paranormal. Philosophers of science agree that all of our knowledge about the world has been painstakingly deduced ultimately - from analysis of the perceptions of our five senses embedded in a 4-dimensional reality. Five-dimensional paraphysics apparently includes the data perceptible by one or more additional senses, including ESP, that are very poorly developed in our own 4-dimensional realm. Having had millions of years to evolve far beyond humanity into the universal Consciousness reality, an advanced knowledge of their 5dimensional paraphysics and resulting technology has apparently enabled aliens to design their UFOs to overcome the notorious 4-dimensional barriers to unlimited space travel - such as the speed limit of light. Taking advantage of nonlocality, UFOs may be able to readily move arbitrarily far in space and time within their Consciousness reality and to readily project in and out of our Life/Mind reality. This would resolve the physically inexplicable observations of UFOs, such as their "now you see them, now you dont" behavior; their defiance of our laws of inertia; and their paranormal superposition on photos taken by those rare people capable of paranormal functioning. Such advanced paraphysics may also make it possible to take advantage of the mathematical dictum that time can flow backward, which would enable aliens or our own descendents to visit us from the future. Our inability to use our 4dimensional brain structure to even conceive of a 5-dimensional realm and our very limited knowledge of how to use ESP or other paraphysical concepts to sense or investigate such a realm accounts for the almost total refusal of science to study the nature of this paranormal reality or its technology: UFOs.

Why Are They Here?

Many books have been written that address this profound question, resulting in a large range of answers, all of them ultimately speculative. Some idea of how difficult these questions are may be gained by considering the thoughts of the great psychiatrist Carl G. Jung. Though ambivalent about the nature of UFOs, he was at least late in his career firmly convinced of their physical reality. Jung attempted an original, if characteristically ambiguous, synthesis between the physical reality of UFOs and their relation to our consciousness: It seems to me.that UFOs are real material phenomena of an unknown nature, presumably coming from outer space.. Since they seem to have appeared more frequently after the Second World War, it may be they are synchronous phenomena or meaningful coincidences (Jung, 1959, 117). More recent data and the advent of the abduction phenomena have expanded our conjectures of alien intentions. Ufologists - not least because humans have rarely been harmed despite the enormous advantage of alien technology generally agree that most alien species are not here

to harm us. Rather, at least some of the unknown number that are visiting us appear to be trying to assist us, most evidently and most relevant to our wellbeing and survival, by warning of ecological catastrophe. Many abductees are telepathically shown visions of future ecological disaster ranging from massive floods to barren deserts and even nuclear annihilation. Some abductees say the future cataclysms are unchangeable while others say that there is still time to avoid them if we can adapt soon enough (Lang, 2010). Ring quotes UFO and abductee researcher Ray Fowler who, in his book The Watchers, wrote The acceleration of UFO activity is directly related to Mans increasing destruction of earths lifesupporting environment. Man must engage in an immediate all-inclusive program to repair and protect the environment (Ring, 1992, 232). Another dominant message abductees bring back is that of spiritual enlightenment, sometimes through the agency of the beings of light they encounter (Lang, 2010) similar to those often encountered during the near-death experience (Ring, 1992). This is consistent with Rings opinion that The key to our continued survival lies in our being able to develop deeper awareness of our transcendental nature (Ring, 1992, 236). Another indication of beneficent alien intent comes from Nancy Talbotts report that It is Robberts opinion that most (perhaps all) of these UFO images appearing on photos though not seen by the eye represent energetic projections of actual UFOs being transmitted through him from a cosmic source which is entirely external to him. He feels that he is functioning here simply as a medium, and that UFOs actually make some crop circles. In those cases, the energy source behind the "UFO" images is related to a loving spiritual force which is working through him [and the cameras he uses] to encourage awareness of the reality of the spiritual realm (Talbott, 2009, part 1). If he is correct about this I wonder whether UFO images are now being projected because they have become a widely recognizable symbol representative of the other-worldly (Talbott, 2009, part 4). Jerome Clark, quoting astrophysicist and computer theorist Jacques Vallee in 1978, pointed out that the fairies in medieval Europe and various religious apparitions, are examples of otherworldly icons of the other that have been experienced by humanity for millennia. Vallee considers UFOs to be paranormal in nature and a modern space age manifestation of a phenomenon which assumes different guises in different historical contexts (Clark, 1978). Though some medieval apparitions were hostile the most common involved divine religious figures such as the Virgin Mary bearing the message of transcendent reward for spiritual virtue (Vallee, 2010). It is important to be clear that the alien messages abductees bear are frequently vague, incoherent, and distorted by trauma. Also, there are other categories of messages that we have neglected here. It may be that we are merely hearing what we want to hear. What could be more desirable than good weather and spiritual enlightenment?

The Medium is the Message

If the ultimate meaning of what the aliens are conveying to us is unclear, the key to comprehension of alien intentions may lie in the medium through which we encounter the message. The environmental warnings of abductees whom the scientific establishment, governments, and the mainstream press almost completely ignore - has had virtually no effect on worldwide efforts to avert disastrous climatic changes, and has failed to enlighten more than a small number of people. It remains unknown why alien warnings have not been conspicuously directed toward world leaders and other influential people or toward artists, who often intuit and foment fundamental cultural change. Of course, similar warnings of environmental crises by government leaders and scientists backed by rigorous studies all based on appeals to todays science rather than messages from the aliens - have also had little success in braking the cultural momentum toward environmental ruin. Nor have the many messages of cosmic enlightenment borne by abductees been effectively broadcast to, much

less enlightened, our civilization. Rational discourse is failing us at the moment when the specters of ecocide and political upheaval are becoming increasingly alarming. PSI researcher James Hansen observed Many of the questions about the great diversity of paranormal phenomena, including UFOs, seem totally unrelated, or at best, only vaguely so. These questions seem to be a random hodgepodge, unsuited for reasonable discussion. It appears preposterous to lump them together. They do not fit in our logical world (Hansen, 2001). A radically new approach, it appears, may be what UFOs are trying to convey through their method of communication the type of profound communication that we might expect from a culture light years ahead of our own. Why should UFOs appear and disappear apparently at random, confront lonely people on lonely roads, enlighten some and terrify others, and engage in other extremely bizarre and shocking actions that have been so extensively documented? We dont understand, but understanding is the child of rationality which, as discomforting as it may be to acknowledge - appears to be fruitless and even counterproductive when confronting questions about such profound phenomena as UFOs and related paranormal phenomena. Rationality and its prized progeny, science, have become the most sacred of cows, relegating to ridicule any intimations of immortality or innovations in epistemology that escape their straightjacketed definition of reality. It is worth recalling Nancy Talbotts interpretation of the UFO images that have been projected on photos taken by Robbert van den Broeke: UFO images could be expected to trigger the sort of questioning of "reality" thought to be requisite for spiritual growth. (emphasis added) (Talbott, 2009, part 4). The leading ufologist, Jacques Vallee, who was among the first to question the absolute sanctity of reason in our logic-deifying culture, said in 1978 If you're trying to express something which is beyond the comprehension of a subject, you have to do it not through appeals to reason, but through statements that appear contradictory or seem absurd. For example, in Zen Buddhism the seeker must deal with such concepts as the sound of one hand clapping - an apparently preposterous notion which is designed to break down ordinary ways of thinking. The occurrences of similar absurd messages in UFO cases brought me to the idea that we're dealing with a sort of control system that is subtly manipulating human consciousness (emphasis added) (Vallee, 1978). Ring writes that Carl Raschke, a thinker influenced by Vallee, and who based his thought largely on accounts of UFO encounters, further suggests that the effect of these extraordinary encounters is not merely to control us but to confound us (emphasis in original). That is, to loose [humanity] from the fetters of its encrusted habits of thought and action, freedom from which is absolutely necessary if the next state of human evolution and the reclamation of the planet are to occur (Ring, 1992, 243). According to Raschke, [UFO] experiences tend to be convulsive, perplexing, and outre and to conflict strikingly with the habitual thought patterns of [the witness]. A meeting with a UFO is apt to leave the witnesses world in upheaval (Raschke, 1989). Terrence McKenna came to a similar conclusion. The UFO is an idea whose purpose is to confound science, because science has begun to threaten the existence of the human species and the entire ecosystem of the planet. And at this point a shock is necessary for the culture a shock equivalent to the shock of the Resurrection on Roman Imperialism (emphasis added} (McKenna, 1987). Ring concludes: UFOs are acting as agents of cultural deconstruction, the literary school of thought that consists of a gradual but inexorable dismantling of the commonly held structures of thought and values in order to permit a new, more fluid, and open way of being in the world. Deconstruction . seeks not to replace one system by another, but to foster a nonrigid openness to experience itself. We are meant to be baffled. Only by confronting and yielding to the unknowable by rigorously avoiding both the temptation to deny or explain away these phenomena - or by trying to find some conventional explanation for them - can

we, as a species, evolve in consciousness to a point where we may be able to take the steps necessary to avert a grim planetary fate (Ring, 1992, 243-246). Conclusion If the ultimate message from our extradimensional friends is that we should replace rationality as we now know it - with a radical openness of mind, they leave us at the abyss flailing incoherently. However, I believe the message from the UFOs will eventually lead us to a place where the essence of science, rationality, is subsumed under a novel new edifice, in the manner that Newtonian physics was superseded but not abandoned when it was ambushed by Bohr and Einstein. We must fundamentally alter our modes of thought in order to successfully confront the confounding enigmas thrust upon us by not only UFOs but by nonlocality, extrasensory perception, precognition, abductions, and many other enigmatic phenomena that we have only started to investigate and havent yet begun to comprehend. We should not be discouraged as we begin our quest that we are encountering koan-like paradoxes and blatant absurdities UFOs being prime examples. The real frontier of human knowledge lies not in the quest for a unified field theory; rather, we are tasked with the transcendence of rationality a mighty mission requiring the genius of a hundred Einsteins that may lead to a deep wisdom intrinsic to the Consciousness reality toward which the aliens are pointing the way.
