1984 Book 2 Chapters 1, 2 and 3 Chapter 1 1) We find out the reason for the frightened look is because of the presence of telescreens around and the fear of being caught. 2) He fears of rejection and embarrassment. He might just be worried about how stupid he'll feel if he gets "shot down and she loses interest in him. 3) It was strange that neither looked at one another during the conversation. 4) It is revealed that Julia has a thorough map in her head of the route Winston was to follow for their next meeting. 5) Winston and Julia are holding hands, but instead of looking into Julia's eyes, he is looking into the eyes of the prisoner. Chapter 2 1) Nature imagery, connoting an affair between Winston and Julia in the Golden Country. Colors dominate the landscape: "dappled light and shade, stepping out into pools of gold"; "misty with bluebells"--all of which symbolize Spring, freedom, re-birth, and love. 2) She says the only reason she does it is to stay safe and be less suspicious. 3) She says it was something about Winstons face that showed he was against the party. This shows she was openly against the party as well. 4) This signifies that in the future Winston is seeking to rebel against Oceania, but, such attempts are going to be futile. 5) Winston hates purity and goodness, and wants corruption within the Party to weaken and undermine it. 6) The three sentences show that their intimacy was a way to say to the party that they cant be controlled. 7) A motif is a recurrent thematic element in an artistic or literary work. The motif of the scarcity of goods is based on the real wartime efforts of the British government and Soviet Union to both conserve and profit from consumers. Orwell is both imitating and exaggerating what he saw happening during World War II. The purpose of the scarcity is to keep order in the Outer Party and Proles hungry, tired, and stupid. 8) The war was a travesty created by the government to keep people in a constant state of fear and patriotism, so that they would not sway from the Party.

Chapter 3 1) Julia can be called apolitical because her hatred for the Party is not based on any ideology. Instead, she only hates the Party because of the impact that it has on her personal ability to go and do what she wants. 2) Sexual privation induced hysteria, which transformed into war fever and leader worship. 3) Winston believed there was no such thing as happiness for the future and that they are already dead, whereas Julia believes there is still a chance and they are not dead yet.
